3 President s Corner February is the one month of the year I m always glad to see gone. It seems this is my worst month of the year for photographing. Its also a time that I m just itching to get away somewhere. I usually go to Bosque in late January or early February but, I just didn t feel like driving 475 miles. I did take a short trip last week. I left one morning to go out on the prairie hopefully to photograph some Antelope. My first stop was Adobe Creek Reservoir State Wildlife Area 13 miles north of Las Animas. On the drive in I seen two Antelope in the distance and nothing else. I continued on to Queens State Wildlife area with the same results. Next stop was John Martin Reservoir where I spent the night. One very, very cold night. Bald Eagles were said to winter there but none was sited by me. Next morning I headed north toward Limon spotting a few Antelope at a distance to far to get a decent shot. I also took a right turn for a short drive to the Sand Creek Massacre Area a place I always wanted to visit. It was cold and windy as I stood on that hill overlooking the battle site where so many Cheyenne and Arapaho were killed on November 29, Looking out over the flat plains I wondered how any escaped at all, there seemed to be no place to hide or to escape to. As I turned to leave it suddenly seemed colder. Turning on Highway 24 in Limon I decided not to spend another cold night camping but would sleep in my own warm bed. Not much to show for a two day trip but Spring is just ahead. GOODBYE FEBRUARY. T.W. Woodruff 2

17 Random Bits and Bites 1) TW has sent a letter to the high schools in the region regarding the contest. It will run through April 25th. First place will be $100, second will be $50 and third will be $25. A big thanks to Jackie Vignone for gathering contact information for the many area high schools! 2) Be sure to regularly check out www. peakradar.com for the latest arts and culture events and information in the Pikes Peak region. 3) As you may have heard the Pikes Peak Camera Club has been offered an opportunity to host a photography show at the Cottonwood Center for the Arts (new name for the Cottonwood Artists School) in either June or July. The school is moving to a new, bigger and better location downtown. This will be a great opportunity to drive club membership! 4) One of our members has a website you might like to check out: 5) Drop off for the juried photoography show at the Cottonwood Artists School was today. I noticed several club members on the sign-in sheet. If you didn t make it there today, all is not lost. They will also be excepting entries on Monday. 6) And last, but not least I wanted to write a short paragraph about February s monthly contest. I left the meeting more than a bit annoyed and frustrated with what I thought was some harsh judging. I even went so far as to boot up my computer and check my image for the blown highlights that I knew would not be there. I was right and felt slightly vindicated! However, the next day my irritation faded and I realized I was being silly. I didn t join the club to win contests and to get rave reviews on all of my images. I joined the club for the camaraderie of fellow photographers and to learn about the craft thereby (hopefully) increasing my photographic skill. Although I may not agree with a particular score or a comment, I still leave the meeting having learned something and having enjoyed the evening with friends. I ll try to remember this in the future when I receive a low score or a comment with which I may not agree. :) 16
