2 Introduction Difficulty: Time: 1 Hour (When you master this technique you can do this in 20 min) Skills: Moderate knowledge of Photoshop s Layers and Layer Masks Program: Photoshop CS2 and above (Does not work with Elements) Digital Heavens agreed to share the two files with you for FREE, but they are made smaller at their request. They are 3000 x 3000 but you can scale them to 6000 x 6000 without almost any loss in quality. The files can be found here. The files are from the Cosmic Pack 3 released by Digital Heavens. 3 Method 1(Easy) First open Photoshop and create a new file (Ctrl + N) with 2500px x 2500px in size and 300 dpi resolution. Then fill it with solid black and go to Filter Render Clouds. Then go to Filter Render Difference clouds and you should now have something like this: Now press Ctrl + F around times. (The more times you press Ctrl + F, the more advanced your world will become) Now you should have something like this: 3

4 Now press Ctrl + J two times. You layer palette should now look like this: Now while you have the Layer 1 Copy 2 selected go to Image Adjustments Brightness/Contrast and apply these settings: This will be your Ground area (You can use different settings but Brightness over -20 is not recommended) Now do the same for the Layer 1 Copy 1, but apply these settings instead: This will be your Snowy area (You can us different settings but make sure Brightness is over is best) 4

5 Your layer palette should now look like this: Now create a new file with these settings 6000px x 6000px and 300dpi (You can use other settings but for best results use a square canvas) then fill the empty file with a sea like colour. I used # (DO NOT DELETE THE OTHER FILE!) Some good colours are: # 2C445C #273D52 #293F56 Click here for many more Now on top of the sea layer you place the Ground texture that will be your landmasses and on top of that layer again place the Mountains&Snow texture so you should have a layer palette that looks like this: 5

6 Now you go back to the other file and drag the Layer 1 Copy 2 layer over to the new file you created. Your layer palette should now look like this (You will need to press Ctrl + T to resize the Layer 1 Copy 2 layer to fit the canvas) Now go to Select Colour Range then click on a white area on the layer and turn up the fuzziness to max like this and click ok Now with that selection active go to the Ground texture and apply a layer mask. Palette should now look like this: Click here with a selection active to add Layer Mask 6

7 Now repeat these last steps with Layer 1 Copy 1 and then your palette should look like this: And now you have an Earthly Planet Texture ready to use. 7

8 Applying a Coast to the Texture If you want your land to have a nice coast, read on! To create a coast, go back to the first file you created and get the layer named Layer 1 Now drag that back to the texture and place it below the ground layer but above the water layer. Now ctrl click on the ground layer mask and apply a layer mask to Layer 1 : 8

9 Now click on Layer 1 s layer mask and go to Filter Blur Gaussian Blur and apply these settings: You can change these settings to whatever suits you! Now do the same with Layer 1 but apply different settings: Remember: You can use different settings then the one provided! 9

10 Now press Ctrl + V to bring up the Hue/Saturation panel and give it a nice coastal colour: (Remember to tick the Colorize box in the lover right) Now your layer palette should look like this: 10

11 And the texture should have a nice coast around the landmasses: 11

12 Difficulty: Method 2 (Advanced) Time: 2 Hours (When you master this technique you can do this in 30 min) Skills: Advanced knowledge of Photoshop s Layers and Layer Masks Program: Photoshop CS2 and above (Does not work with Elements) This method is more advanced and takes longer time than the other. Just creating the shape you want your texture to be can take over 1 hour. Creating Continent Map Let s get started. First create a new file 6000 x 6000 and fill that image with black. Now go to Filter Render Clouds. The go to Filter Render Difference Clouds and press Ctrl + F around 60 times. 12

13 Now go to Adjustments Brightness/Contrast and tick the Use Legacy option and apply the following settings. Now create a new file with the same dimensions as the file you just created and fill that with black. Now go back to the other file and use you Lasso tool and mark sections of land like this. Remember white is land and black is ocean. Once you have marked a piece of land press Ctrl + C to copy it and move to the black document and press Ctrl + V to paste it. Now place this as you see fit. Note: Avoid placing land to close to the edges of the document. You will see why later. 13

14 Now you do the same thing as you just did. Go to the file with land and select a different white/black area and then past it into the other document but be sure to set the blending mode to screen like this. Continue like this until you have created the coast of a continent like this: Now flatten the parts to this continent by marking them and pressing Ctrl + Alt + E 14

15 Now start creating other continents and islands. Islands you can just mark full pieces of white and past into the document like this. This is my result after about 40 minutes. Now create a new layer and place it below the outlines of you continents and select a Hard Brush with a size of 100 and 100% Hardness and paint white inside the continents. When this is done the lands look very flat. So what can we do about that? I know! Create lakes! 15

16 Adding Lakes Create a new document with the normal size of 6000 x 6000 and fill it with black. Now use the Cloud and Difference Cloud filter again (Remember DC around 60 times)now go to Adjustments Brightness/Contrast and tick Use Legacy. Now apply settings so you get small islands. Now press Ctrl + I to invert. You should now have this. Now mark black areas and past them into the continents like this. Now use the textures that Digital Heavens supplied and set them up like this in a new document with 6000 x 6000 size. Now flatten everything on the continent map and drag it over to the document with the textures. 16

17 Now go to Select Colour Range and apply the following settings Now create a layer mask on the ground texture like this Now if you want mountains with snow we can do that to. Creating Snowy Mountains Go back to the continent map and create a new black layer and set it to screen. Now if you still have the file used for creating lakes you can just invert it again and grab the lasso tool and mark white small islands and paste them into the continent map like this 17

18 When you are satisfied with the result merge every layer together EXCEPT the continents. Your palette should look like this. Now drag the texture you just created over to the main textures and do the same thing as you did when you applied a layer mask to the continent. You should now have this and the palette should look like this. What s missing? You guessed it ;) a coast Adding a Coast To add a cost create a new layer and place it below the ground texture and above the Sea texture and fill it with a coast colour. Now give that layer the same layer mask as the ground texture got and go to Gaussian Blur with strength of 10. You should now have this. 18
