2 The following document outlines the suggested steps, process, and production for the installation of Cabot Plaid onto your barn. Throughout the guide we will be stating the obvious in some circumstances, so please bear with us. We want to make this as simple and clean as possible. At the finish, we hope you love the look of your barn and appreciate how much you re contributing to your Cabot s brand identity.

3 The Cabot Plaid is our very serious adaptation of the classic Buffalo Plaid. This popular American pattern of black check lines on red can trace its origins as far back as the 8th century to the Rob Roy MacGregor Tartan of Scotland. Legend has it that the pattern made its North American debut in the late 1800 s on the back of a charismatic Scottish Highlander by the name of Big Jock McCluskey. McCluskey, notorious for his strength and stature as well as his compassion, soon became a successful trader, bartering goods fashioned out of his red and black plaid with Sioux and Chyenne in exchange for buffalo hides which he sold to U.S. Army fur traders, hence earning the name: Buffalo Plaid. Since then, Vermont companies like Johnson Woolen Mills and the Vermont Flannel company have kept Buffalo plaid alive and well on everything from blankets and coats to pajamas and table cloths. 02

4 Cabot adopted Buffalo Plaid as our own point of packaging distinction in early 1989 when the three pound bags of this then edgy, off-grade cheddar known as Hunters Cheese was sold cheaply to those passing by the plant during deer season. In time, the cheddar s popularity allowed us to launch a plaid graced consumer size. What started as Cabot Hunters in plaid didn t work when sales grew in the south. Southerners hunted in camouflage. Calling our cheddar Hunters was confusing; we had to give up the name or lose the plaid. We kept the plaid and renamed it Seriously Sharp. Our plaid now punctuates ads, our web site, our promotional tents, and now, even our farmers barns. Seriously Sharp Cabot Cheddar is usually our bestselling cheddar bar anywhere it is sold.

5 04 In preparation make sure you have: Bucket loader Scaffolding Forklift and pallet or Articulated Man Lift ($300/day rental)* 2 Big Ladders ($80/day rental)* 1 step ladder 1 Power Washer ($70/day rental)* or hose 1 Airless Paint Sprayer ($75/day rental)* Paint or Stain (depending on barn surface) Stencils (provided by Cabot) Staple Gun - to help hold stencils in place (do not use duct tape) Needle Nose Pliers - to remove staples after black is applied Stir Sticks Plastic/canvas drop cloth Roll of plastic for masking windows and doors Extension Cords & Power Strips Paint Rollers with Poles 2 Angled Tip Paint Brush 4 Paint Pans Empty Bucket 4 Rolls of 2 Masking Tape Cloth Rags Once you ve gathered the necessary equipment, take time to review the process outlined in the pages that follow. 6 To administer Cabot Plaid on to the surface of your barn, we have designed a set of three easy to use, oversized stencils. The overall layout and design should follow the current composition (pictured below) as closely as possible. X 2 X 4 X 4 LARGE STENCIL HALF STENCIL CORNER STENCIL

7 06 For barns with wooden siding, we have found that Sherwin Williams Woodscapes Exterior Acrylic Solid Color House Stain works better than the Super Paint because it does not cake on to the stencil like paint, therefore preventing tearing and extending the life of the stencil. Like the paint, this stain is water soluble, for ease of clean-up. For Barns with Metal, Fiberglass, Brick or other non wood exterior surfaces, please consult a paint specialist for advice on which product will best suit your project needs. IMPORTANT If you chose to use stain, you must use stain for BOTH the red and the black color applications. Likewise, if you choose paint, you must also use paint for both steps. Do not mix paint and ain st

8 We have matched Cabot Red 485 and Cabot Black through Sherwin Williams. Both stain and paint can be tinted to these colors. COLOR SPECIFICS Sherwin Williams -Super Paint -OR- Woodscapes Exterior Acrylic Solid Color House Stain (available at Sherwin Williams) You will need good coverage, so don t skimp on paint quality. Sherwin Williams can Calculate the amount of paint or stain needed, based on the square footage of your barn s exterior surface.

9 08 Both paint and stain will help protect your barn s exterior, and with the Cabot plaid design, it will definitely turn heads. As a good rule of thumb, you should apply two coats of Cabot Red over the entire side to be painted plaid. Make sure to wait until the first coat is completely dry before applying the second coat. When second coat is dry, follow with a precise stencil application of Cabot Black. You will need to use a combination of rollers and brushes to get into all the little cracks and, touch up areas. Original Barn Surface Whether unpainted or previously painted, make sure to prepare the surface you re about to paint. Scrape off any chipping paint, and make sure to mask off areas you don t want paint applied.

10 Applying Red Combine the use of paint sprayer, rollers, and brushes to apply the first 2 coats of red. Applying Black Place stencil flush to barn exterior. Carefully match vertical edge of stencil to vertical edge of barn and staple securely to the siding. Saturate roller conservatively with paint or stain. Starting on a checked area of stencil, roll black paint or stain towards open square. Go Slowly! Be cautious of the stencil tearing, and do not roll beyond the stencil.

11 10 Consider the scope of the project before you start. It s probably bigger, and will take longer than you anticipate. It s best to factor in a full two days with a good weather forecast, just like haying. High winds and rain can ruin your project before you even start. As noted, make sure you securely mask around areas you don t intend to paint. Prepare any rough spots, chips, and areas that will prevent paint from laying down in an even coat.

12 Placement of the first stencil is the corner stone of your project. All other stencils will be set off of this one, so make sure to line it up flush with a 90 degree angle on the barn. This may be a lower corner, a corner against a door, where ever you can make sure it s square. We recommend using a FULL SIZE stencil as your first, to maximize accuracy, and optimize coverage. Tip Pick the corner of a big open area, in order to repeatedly use the full size stencil as many times as space allows, working your way into smaller nooks and crannies with the half and corner stencils. The stencils are designed with the 45 degree angle so let gravity be your friend in aligning each stencil.

13 12 For best results make sure you have your stencils as flush to the siding as possible. It s best to securely staple the stencil to hold it in place. Having a partner during this process is key. You will need to use a roller to conservatively apply paint, and then transition to a brush to fill in areas that were missed. Once you ve removed the stencil make sure to rotate to a dry stencil. Drying time and rotation of stencils is necessary for clean application. You may want to Reinforce your stencils at the edges with masking tape. This helps ensure you don t tear or rip the stencil in fragile areas from heavy paint use, or high winds.

15 Once the stencil is removed you will see areas that require touch up. Make sure to be precise and close any noticeable gaps. 14
