3 OUTLINE FOR WEEK 4 SIDING AND EXTERIOR PAINT 1. SAFETY BRIEFING (SEE EXHIBITS SECTION) 2. Complete siding Breathing mask required for cutting siding Hearing protection recommended a. Cutting for straight edge i. Measure twice, cut once and cut accurately ii. Use speed square iii. Take your time, straight/square cuts are important b. Spray cut edges i. Spray ends to seal ii. Butt factory edges whenever possible iii. Gap between = to 8p nail at corner boards and brick mold iv. Butt joints in field should be set tight c. Caulking d. Nail placement e. Cut for windows 3. Paint exterior a. Caulk all plumbing and electrical boxes b. Inspect all siding joints/nail holes and re-caulk as necessary c. Tape around: i. Windows ii. Electrical meter box iii. Dryer vent iv. Hose bib v. Base of columns d. Apply first coat of exterior paint prior to lunch i. Cut in with brush 1. along edges 2. under siding 3. along windows/doors/trim a. note: paint edge of door molding and edge of trim same color as siding e. Apply the second coat after lunch 4. Paint all exterior trim a. Caulk and fill nail holes b. Paint with white trim paint 5. Prime exterior doors a. Apply primer to all sides of doors b. Use a fine quality brush in grooves c. Use a foam roller for flat surfaces d. Do not prime front door window trim 6. Paint shutters a. Paint back side first b. Minimum 2 coats of front side CLEAN AND SAVE ALL 5 GALLON PAINT BUCKETS FOR FUTURE USE 3
4 COMPLETE SIDING Siding must be completed on build day 4 and exterior paint applied. Since the drywall is not completed by this day, there will not be any interior work. In good weather this will allow the volunteers to complete one coat of paint on the exterior in the morning and the finish coat in the afternoon. 1. Complete Siding a. Prior to the start of painting on a side of the house the following things must be complete. b. Siding must be up high enough on the wall and under the porch to allow F channel installation. c. In some cases we will use scrap pieces of siding for mounting of F channe.l SIDING UP TO TRUSSES UNDER PORCH. SIDING AT LEAST 2 ABOVE SUB-FACIA THIS CAN BE A PIECE FLAT AGAINST THE HOUSE. CAULK CAULK BETWEEN SIDING AND TRIM BOARD ON INSIDE CORNER. d. Caulk between corner boards and siding. 4
5 e. Caulk between door brick molding and siding. CAULK CAULK BETWEEN CORNER BOARDS SIDING. CAULK BETWEEN BRICK MOLD AND SIDING. NOTE: WIPING CAULK OFF WITH A WET RAG ALLOWS TOO MUCH WATER FROM THE RAG TO PENETRATE THE CAULK. 5
6 f. All wires, pipes, gas line and any other protrusion must be caulked. COVER CAULK REMOVE COVER, BY PULLING OFF. CAULK CAULK ALL AROUND HOSE BIB BOX. METER BOX SIDING BOX CAULK REMOVE COVER AND CAULK ALL AROUND OUTSIDE OF BOX. CAULK ALL AROUND POWER METER BOX AND SIDING BOX. SIDING BOX MAY VARY IN DESIGN. CAULK CAULK AROUND WIRES. PULL COVER AND CAULK GAS LINE BOX ALL AROUND. 6
7 CAULK CAULK PULL COVER ON DRYER VENT AND CAULK BOX ALL AROUND. CAULK WHERE PORCH BEAM FACIA BOARD MEETS SIDING. g. Inspect the house for any other areas that need caulk. h. Use good judgment as to where you need to caulk. i. Wipe any excess caulk with your finger, but do not break down the caulk joint. j. Do not caulk around windows. 7
8 EXTERIOR PAINTING 1. Wipe off siding if mud splattering is present. 2. Tape all window frames and power meter box. 3. The paint requires about a 4 hour drying time, but will dry sooner on hot days. So it is best to paint the first coat in the morning and the second coat after lunch. POWER METER BOX TAPED. WINDOWS TAPED. 8
9 PREPARING PAINT 1. Sometimes the paint will be in 1 gallon cans. 2. If so pour 4 gallons of paint into a 5 gallon pail to aid in mixing. 3. If the paint is in 5 gallon pails, turn them upside down first thing in the morning. This will aid in the mixing of the paint. PAINT MIXER PLACE PAINT MIXER INTO A DRILL MOTOR. YOU WILL USE THIS TO MIX THE PAINT. MIXING PAINT IN A 5 GALLON. AFTER MIXING, POUR ABOUT 4 TO 6 INCHES OF PAINT IN A 5 GALLON BUCKET. ONE BUCKET PER SIDE OF HOUSE IS SUFFICIENT. MIX PAINT FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. 9
10 HAVE A COUPLE OF 5 GALLON BUCKETS FILLED WITH WATER ON HAND FOR WASHING BRUSHES AND ROLLERS. 10
11 PAINTING CUT IN THE UNDERSIDE OF SIDING ON ALL LAPS OF SIDING. CUT IN AROUND WINDOWS. IF PAINT GETS ON WINDOWS, WIPE OF WITH A WET RAG.. CUT-IN AREAS ALSO INCLUDE THE SIDING TO THE SOFFIT, AROUND ANY VENTS, UTILITY BOXES, ETC. CUT IN NEXT TO CORNER BOARDS AND BRICK MOLDING. PAINT SHOULD COVER SIDE OF CORNER BOARDS AND BRICK MOLDING. 1. Try to maintain a wet edge at all times and avoid dry or excessive rolling. 2. Check for runs, drips and errors; lightly brush these areas. 11
12 CLEAN UP PRIOR TO LUNCH WATER CHANGES COLOR AS PAINT IS ABSORBED. BRUSHES, TRAY AND PAIL COVERED PRIOR TO LUNCH. 1. Brushes a. You can wrap the brush in a wet rag, or b. Place the brush in the bucket of water. c. If you place the brush in the water, you will need to clean it prior to further use. 2. Rollers a. You can wrap the roller in a wet rag, or b. Place the roller in the bucket of water. c. If you place the roller in the water, you will need to clean it before using. 3. Buckets a. You can cover with either a lid or wet rag. b. You will need to drop the screen into the paint. IF YOU NEED TO CLEAN BRUSHES, ROLLERS OR BUCKETS, SEE THE CLEANING SECTION FOR INSTRUCTION. 4. Second coat after lunch a. Check to see that the first coat is dry. b. Repeat the process starting with PAINTING above. 12
13 PAINT COLUMNS AND TRIM 1. Caulk all joints and fill nail holes prior to painting. 2. All columns, trim and exterior door brick molding is painted with exterior white trim paint. 3. Tape off the bottom of the columns prior to painting. CAULK AREAS CAULK ALL EDGES AND FILL NAIL HOLES. CAULK AREAS CAULK ALL EDGES AND FILL NAIL HOLES. 4. THIS IS A LIST OF TRIM THAT GETS PAINTED WHITE. a. corner boards b. porch beam trim boards c. columns d. exterior door brick molding e. threshold supports f. mailbox post 5. All exterior trim is painted with 2 coats of paint. 13
14 6. Use exterior white trim paint. COLUMNS EXTERIOR BRICK MOLDING PORCH BEAM TRIM FRONT DOOR BRICK MOLDING THRESHOLD SUPPORT TAPE OFF ANY AREAS THAT DO NOT GET PAINTED. 14
15 PAINT TRIM BOARDS, FACIA BOARDS AND COLUMNS WITH WHITE TRIM PAINT. PAINT WITH WHITE TRIM PAINT. 15
16 PRIMING EXTERIOR DOORS 1. DO NOT PAINT PRE-FINISHED WOOD FRONT DOORS. 2. Remove door knob and dead bolt assembly. 3. Wipe door down with a damp rag. 4. TAPE HINGES AND DOOR SEAL TO PROTECT FROM PAINT. 5. DO NOT PAINT FRONT DOOR WINDOW TRIM WINDOW TRIM FRONT DOOR EXTERIOR WINDOW TRIM FRONT DOOR INTERIOR WINDOW TRIM 6. Prior to priming the exterior doors, tape the rubber seal strip on both sides of the door. SEAL STRIP BLACK SEAL STRIP ON THE BOTTOM OF THE DOOR. 16
17 PAINT RESESSED AREAS OF THE DOOR WITH A SMALL BRUSH. PAINT EDGES OF THE DOOR WITH A SMALL BRUSH. PAINT THE REMAINDER OF THE DOOR WITH A SMALL FOAM ROLLER OR A VERY GOOD BRUSH. 17
18 AFTER PAINTING THE DOOR CHECK FOR RUNS AND TOUCH UP. RUNS WILL SHOW UP USUALLY ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED PAINTING. 18
19 PAINT SHUTTERS 1. Shutters are painted the same color as the exterior doors. 2. It works out better to paint the back side first. PAINTING THE BACK SIDE FIRST PAINTING THE FRONT SIDE 3. Shutters will require a minimum of 2 coats on the front side. 19
20 END OF WORK DAY CLEAN UP USING A RAG, REMOVE ROLLER FROM ROLLER FRAME. DROP ROLLER IN A BUCKET OF WATER TO PRE-SOAK. REMOVE EXCESS PAINT WITH 5 IN ONE TOOL, RINSE AND USE 5 IN ONE TOOL A SECOND TIME. THEN SUBMERGE IN 5 GAL BUCKET OF WATER. ROLLER WILL BE READY TO USE THE NEXT WEEK. USE A 5 IN 1 TOOL TO CLEAN OFF EXCESS PAINT INTO A BUCKET. RINSE THE REMAINDER OF PAINT OFF IN THE SINK. 20
21 RING OUT EXCESS WATER. PLACE CLEAN ROLLER ON SPINNING TOOL. SLIDE ROLLER TO THIS POSITION. SPIN ROLLER DRY. USE THE BRUSH COMB TO CLEAN BRUSHES. INSERT COMB INTO BRUSH CLOSE TO THE METAL BAND. 21
22 DRAW THE COMB THROUGH THE BRUSH. REPEAT AS NECESSARY. PLACE BRUSH IN SPINNING TOOL. NOTE: SMALL FOAM ROLLER CANNOT BE USED ON THIS TOOL. DRAW HANDLE BACK OUT OF SPINNING TOOL. PUSH HANDLE FORWARD TO SPIN BRUSH. REPEAT UNTIL ALL WATER IS REMOVED. 1. Hang brushes up to dry, until the next use. 2. Store rollers in a 5 gallon bucket until next use. SAVE ALL 5 GALLON PAINT BUCKETS FOR FUTURE USE. 22

Focus on specific task and do it safely b. Environmental conditions i. Sun protection ii. Rain and mud c. Protective devices provided i. Eye and ear protection ii. Gloves iii. Breathing masks 3. Individual tool usage (Power and Hand) a. Powder tools i. Must be experienced in the use of the power tool and checked out by the onsite House Leader or Crew Leaders. ii. Must be a minimum of 18 years of age to use power tools b. Hand tools i. Maintain proper control when using ii. Be aware of who is near your work area 1. Ex: swinging hammer 2. Utility knives iii. Handle tools with care and respect c. Nail Guns i. Gun is the operative word ii. Must be experienced in the use of the nail gun and checked out by the on-site House Leader or Crew Leaders. 4. Ladders a. Maintain level, solid platform on ground or concrete b. Proper angle for ladders c. Do not leave anything on top of ladder i. Step Ladders have holes for hammers, etc. ii. Bucket of paint WILL fall 5. Construction Material a. Proper carrying techniques; bend at the knees, not the back b. Be aware of surroundings and where material will extend into surroundings 24
25 c. Watch for nails, splinters and sharp edges 6. Outside of house a. Do not put anything on top plate 7. Painting a. Proper use of brushes and rollers i. Avoid paint splatters 1. Can get in your eyes 8. First Aid a. Kit in the pod b
