1 2018 Student Art Scholarship The Woodlands Arts Council
2 Who is welcome We invite public, private, and homeschooled Juniors and Seniors to participate in our Annual Student Art Scholarship competition. The Woodlands Arts Council wants to give students the opportunity to exhibit their work and offer financial assistance towards their higher education. We are asking students to participate and submit in one of the following art categories: painting, drawing, mixed media 2D, mixed media 3D, digital art, and photography. Important Note: We are wanting students to rigorously focus on the elements and principles of design. Elements of Design: color, texture, shape, form, line, space, and value Principles of Design: Emphasis, Balance, Pattern, Proportion, Unity, Contrast, and Rhythm
3 What are the categories? Painting Drawing Mixed Media 2D Mixed Media 3D Digital Art Photography Each of these works will be featured at this year s 2018 Woodlands Waterway Arts Festival, where they will be in the student art scholarship booth. The Woodlands Arts Council would also like to offer an optional portfolio review to each selected winner and the honorable mention from each category. Selected winners will receive: 1 st - $2,000 2 nd - $1,000 3 rd - $500
4 Painting Painting: The process of art using the medium of paint. Fresco: Mixture of pigment and egg yolk. This is usually paint on a surface covered in plaster. Impasto: The technique of laying thick paint down. Applying paint in a thick manner. Tenebrism: The technique of painting in which light is used to focus attention on a single figure or particular figures in a composition
5 Drawing Drawing: The process of making light and dark lines and marks using pencil. Chiaroscuro: The technique of contrasting light an dark shading, making shadows that would be created by natural light. Foreshortening: The depiction of an object being closer or as having less depth or distance. Sfumato: The technique of blending tones together in order to make softened outlines or hazy forms. Cross hatching: Distinct lines for light and shadows.
6 Mixed Media 2D Mixed Media: Visual art the combines a variety of mediums into a single piece. These can include an assemblage of collage, altered objects, and watercolors. 2D: Two-dimensional, or flat. Works that are considered 2D can be done using pencil, colored pencil, and watercolors. 7 Mixed Media 3D Mixed Media: Visual art the combines a variety of mediums into a single piece. These can include an assemblage of collage, altered objects, and watercolors. 3D: Three-dimensional or art that can be seen or touched from all angles. Embossing: Producing raised patterns on surfaces such as metal, leather, textiles, paper, etc.
8 Digital Art Digital Art: Using technology in order to produce Art. Abstract: An image that has been simplified but remains recognizable. Aesthetic: The features of art that grab viewers attention Addictive Color: Colors created when using primary colors. Integration: The artistic composition and how the image is organized Iconography: signs and symbols with in a work or art. Light Value: The element when dealing with lightness and darkness Linear perspective: When the artist creates an illusion with in the space.
9 Photography Photography: The art or process of producing images through photos. Lithography: Printing on a flat surface. Iconography: The signs and symbols with in a work of art.
