1 Volume 32, Number 1 December 2010 / January 2011 TWSA slide show, pot luck, Jan. 13 Happy New Year to all of our wonderful members. We will start the New Year off with the January 13 meeting. There will be a slide presentation of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA) show. During the break we will have a pot luck. Please bring a dish to share. This is a great time to catch up with other members. Karlyn Holman to demo for the Feb. 10 MNWS meeting. Karlyn Holman will paint in a traditional approach to watercolor, but with a non-traditional twist. She will be combining collage, colored pencils and watercolor in a oral motif. Karlyn is an internationally recognized artist, author and art instructor. Feb. 10 Mini-show We will not have a mini-show for January. However, the theme for February will be sweethearts. WHAT S A MINI-SHOW? Its a way for members to display one painting at our monthly meeting. Participants have the option to submit their work for a critic. The critic is strictly volunteer and not mandatory. Member with a painting on display will be entered into a drawing for a prize. This is a great way to share your work.
2 2 Volume 32, Number 2, December 2010 / January 2011 BrushStrokes: MINNESOTA WATERCOLOR SOCIETY NEWSLETTER from the President My rst bit of business with this letter is to let members know that we have openings on the board. Presently we need a Hospitality chair. Volunteers sign up to share the food part and there is help the night of the meetings. Participating on the Board is a great way to get to know other artists and since we are all volunteers, we help one another. We ll have more opportunities in the coming months. Those who have volunteered in the past have found it very satisfying. Don t hesitate to let me know you have an interest to serve. If one job doesn t t for you, there will be others! We had a good turnout of members sharing their art at Easel Night this month and it was a great time to say hello to people I haven t seen in a while as well as asking questions of the artists. Our panels and demos are very educational and there is a little time for just visiting at these meetings but our December (easel night) and January (Transparent Watercolor Society Show DVD and pot luck) meetings are a great time to talk with fellow members. I hope you brave our winter to attend in January. This past month a few of us on the board met to discuss plans for our web site and social web sites. I feel my presence is strictly to insure that the others are aware of the technically challenged among our members. We have an article in this month s newsletter about the sites you can visit that include our organization. I hope many of you will sign in and visit these sites. My rst hurdle was deciding on passwords etc and then there was the awkwardness of just viewing, not really adding anything. I soon realized that this internet socializing or sharing is a process and for me a careful, slow process. First I will be there just to look, to learn. Baby cyber steps. So along with coming to this January s meeting I hope you will spend some time cozied up to your computer on long winter nights and snowy weekends. Some of our members are unable to attend the meetings and we hope that these sites will give these artists a more immediate sense of belonging and participating beyond our Newsletter. For those who do attend it s another way to connect. We want to hear from you and welcome comments and suggestions. As I brave this social network I ll let you know my observations. So far it has been fun, in a quiet, observing kind of way. Social networking is all the rage, and it s de nitely here to stay. It is particularly good for artists as it is a great way to discover, connect, and share in ways that were not possible before. Even though watercolor is our medium, and has to be experienced in person to be enjoyed at its best, the online world has plenty to offer to help us all grow as artists and promote our Society and our art. Here are the new MNWS networking channels and how to participate: MNWS LinkedIn group. LinkedIn is a networking Website used by people to connect with others in the same industry. It works well for artists, too. You ll need to join LinkedIn at and then do a search for Minnesota Watercolor Society group. MNWS on Facebook. Already using Facebook? 5 BrushStrokes: MINNESOTA WATERCOLOR SOCIETY NEWSLETTER 5 MNWS Signature Status What is signature status? Simply put, it is a way to identify and reward sustained excellence of members of an organization. In February of 2008, the Minnesota Watercolor Society (MNWS) launched their Signature Status Program. Criteria for signature status: One must earn six points in a ve year span to earn signature status in the MNWS. Here s how you earn points One point is awarded for each piece accepted into our spring juried show. One point for any award won in our fall open show or our spring juried show. All awards best of show through honorable mention, including the Emrich/Stordahl award are worth one point. (Exception the people s choice award would not count for a point.) A person can accumulate multiple points in one show (i.e. Sue gets two pieces accepted into the spring juried show and one piece wins an award. Sue would accumulate three points in this situation.) Volunteerism roughly ten hours or more of volunteer time a year equals one point. Examples include serving as board members, conducting workshops, doing membership mailings, editing the newsletter, etc. These jobs are essentially covered in the long list of names listed inside the front cover of our newsletter. Only two points can come from volunteering, the other four points must be earned by artwork in shows. (If you don t have any volunteer points, you can still achieve signature status by earning all of your points through your artwork.) Only members paid-up in good standing can retain this status. MNWS after an artist s name denotes they have achieved signature status. Announcements of new signature members will be done as soon as a person earns that status; usually at the fall and spring show openings. Individuals can contact Dianne Jandt at artistjandt@aol.com to nd out their total points. Visit for a list of MNWS signature members. Watercolor Tips By Marilyn Jacobson Skin Tones... a Place to Start Here are some ideas for choosing colors for skin tones. The painting of the teenage girl uses colors suggested at a Janet Rogers workshop. For the cool side of the face (away from the light source), a combination of American Journey raw sienna and Sennelier cobalt violet light. For the warm side of the face (toward the light source), A.J. raw sienna and rose (I used Holbein permanent rose, but you may use a nice, clear rose which pleases you). The cheek color on both cheeks is a light wash of the same rose. The sleeping child image uses a triad of three colors. At a workshop by Pat Undes, we were encouraged to experiment with three colors; red, blue and yellow, to nd the combination that produces the tones desired in the painting. To the best of my recollection, I used Indian yellow, ultramarine blue and permanent rose. By using a triad for the entire picture, the result is uni ed and pleasing. Heidi Nelson, another specialist in portraits, uses burnt umber to paint freckles. This is done as an underpainting. Be sure to blot the freckles before they dry, to give a subtle and realistic look to the freckles. When I preserve the whites for highlights on the nose, cheeks (or cheek), lips and eyes, I m more pleased with the result. These ideas and suggestions are from a fairly new watercolorist. I know others use many more colors with beautiful results. However, this is a place to start. Marilyn Jacobson, If you have tips you d like to submit to the newsletter Theresa Weseman, at tweseman@earthlink.net or write her at Quebec Ave. S., Bloomington, MN
6 May 9-13, 2011 (Monday-Friday) Gloria Miller Allen, AWS, TWSA, WW, NWWS. Digging Deep into Artistic Building Blocks Cost $395 Members $435 (Nonmembers) The workshop is designed for the serious student of all levels who desires a firm grasp of the basics - color - values - and composition/design. I believe good academic studies are fundamental to growth and promote confidence and understanding not only of the basic tools we all want at our fingertips, but also the development of a rich awareness of personal strengths, weaknesses, preferences, emerging styles, and a focus on personal artistic goals Many handouts and a folder for everyone will be provided so that by the end of the workshop each student will have created a little booklet consisting of handouts, personal notes, and their academic studies done in the class. The objective of the workshop is to take growth steps toward your own personal goals No matter how far along the artistic journey you are today.
