1 Aloha PAPOH members, Happy spring and summer! I hope all of you are able to get out and paint in this beautiful weather. Thank you for everyone that participated in the 2015 Kauai Paint-out! We had a great turnout this year. It was a great time and we've had such wonderful comments from participants about how much fun they had! We have an upcoming Workshop this May. A wonderful opportunity to study with artist Ruo Li in May on Maui. The workshop dates are May 18th-22nd. The workshop is currently sold out, but if you would like to join the wait-list, please let us know. For more information on the workshop click here. She has been invited to teach a series of classes at Split Rock Cove Art Center in South Thomaston on painting clouds and skies as well as lecture and demo at Carver Hill Gallery, Rockland, Maine.

8 Sunny Seal Artist Sunny Seal and member of the Pastel Artists Of Hawaii had this painting voted Best In Show for the 6th Annual Members Show which was on display at the Hawaii State library's main branch on King St. from April 1st to the 24th. This studio painting is from a trip to New Zealand's north island. Read the article here. Lake Taupo Waterfall Joanne Hopper I've pretty much been out painting by myself lately - haven't been in any plein air events, but Love getting outside to work. I was included in Art Maui for 2015 and was given Honorable Mention by juror Gabrielle Anderman in the Hui's Annual 2015 exhibit for my plein air piece "Holomua Tree Tunnel".

9 Painting Tip: make use of kneaded erasers - squish them into a wedge shape whatever shape you need to level up your medium container in a tipped plein air easel, or to hold a pencil nearby etc. Interesting: Well??? I always meet the most wonderful and interesting people while painting out, from the bikers coming down off Haleakala to a really interesting farmer named Allen who I chatted with at the top of Pi'iholo Road above Makawao. He spotted my shiny umbrella from a ways away and came to talk with me for a while. Michael Clements came and set up behind me out on the Upper Kula road to work on the same Jacaranda I was painting - talk about intimidating... fun though! "Looking Mauka", 10x10, painted in two sessions at the bottom of Holomua Road

10 "Haleakala Road" 6 x 8 L. Diane Johnson June 15-20: will be participating in PAMs Publisher's Invitational in the Adirondacks, NY. Diane's latest painting tip: When a venue asks you to wear a hard hat...do it! :) Funniest thing while painting en plein air was during the PACE 2015 event was painting at a seaside park with wind gusts at 40 mph, and coooooold. Her new Soltek paint box tilted straight down and pastels fell onto rocky/sandy area. Needless to say, only 1/2 painting was completed! :)

Plein Aire encounters: While painting a jacaranda along the Haleakala highway, I heard a "whump, whump, whump" behind me...and looked up just as a huge brightly colored pheasant flew over me from the field on the other side of the road. Wonderful!
