The Great Divide

Introduction Luke 16, verses is a parable told by Jesus it is about a rich man, a poor man, and the place each man went to at the time of his death. The rich man had everything he could possibly want and more. A poor man was laid at the door of the rich man, and unfortunately, received nothing except the rich man s dogs licking his sores. Both men died, it appears around the same time period. The rich man went to hell to suffer in unbearable heat and flames, while the poor man went to heaven where he was placed in the bosom of Abraham (verses 22-23). The rich man could see heaven from his place in hell; he could see the poor man now in good health and happiness. The rich man called to Abraham for water, but Abraham could not help the rich man even if he wanted to. Abraham told the rich man, there is a great chasm separating us, and anyone wanting to come to you from here is stopped at its edge; and no one over there can cross to us. (verse 26) The rich man then pleaded for Abraham to go to his living brothers to warn them about hell. Abraham refused, citing that if they won t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won t listen even though someone rises from the dead. (verse 31) Jesus parable is a perfect example of the state of mankind in its relationship to God today separated and doomed for eternal torment. Jesus gave his life to bridge the chasm between heaven and earth; so, it is through accepting Christ as our Savior that we are spared from hell, and are instead made righteous and reconciled to God. Like the brothers of the rich man, today s modern society and cultures have God s Word in the form of the Bible, warning it of the danger of not coming to Christ. Unfortunately, society does not listen, it pushes God and Christ out of its life. Today s society will find itself in the company of the rich man one of these days. When Christ returns, it will be too late for society to turn to him. Where do you stand in your spiritual life today? Have you accepted Christ as your one and only true Lord in life? Or, have you gone the broad path of many others, believing there is more than one way to heaven? Do you believe that your good deeds are enough to get you into heaven? Re-read passages 19-31, then decide which side of the Great Divide you want to be on. Quilted In Christ The Great Divide Page 4

Techniques Used in Sewing this Pattern One or more of the following techniques were used in the construction of the quilt and are referred to in the instructions. It is my thinking that these details would be most helpful to beginning quilters and also provide a refresher for seasoned quilters who may not have utilized any one of the techniques in a while. Feel free to use the quilting techniques that work best for you and that will provide you with the size of units called for in the pattern. Assembly line Sewing In this method, you will be stitching the individual units of a block unit together at the sewing machine without breaking the thread after stitching each unit. To begin, match the units that need to be sewn, layer the units right sides together, and stitch along the edge to be sewn. When you near the end of the unit, stop stitching just before or just after the end. Pick up the next units to be sewn, layer the units right sides together, and, at the sewing machine, lay them just behind the previously sewn units, at least 1/8" apart, and begin sewing. Repeat until you have all the units sewn. Remove from sewing machine and cut the units apart. Repeat the process as necessary to finish all blocks. This method works very well when piecing log cabin blocks or when stitching pieced segments to strips that will form a block unit. The next strip to be attached is laid face up on the sewing machine; each unit is then stitched to the strip, right sides together, and at least 1/8" of space is left between each unit stitched to the strip. When as many units as can fit on a strip are attached, remove strip with sewn units from the sewing machine and cut apart. Trim away any excess strip fabric that extends beyond the sewn unit. Strip Piecing This technique is just as it sounds stitching strips of fabric together along the longest edges. Strip Bands Some blocks are constructed of segments which come from bands that are made from sewing strips of fabric together. Strips of fabric are sewing together along their longest sides (not end to end), first in pairs, then the pairs of strips are sewn together. After all the strips have been sewn together into a band, the band is pressed from the wrong side (all seams should be pressed in the same direction or open, depending upon the pattern and unless otherwise indicated). The band is then cut into segments that are later pieced in a particular order to obtain the desired pattern. Fusible Interfacing Appliqué To appliqué by this method, trace the shape to be appliquéd onto the smooth side of fusible (iron-in) interfacing. Cut out a box around the shape, and cut a piece of fabric just larger than this square. Layer the traced design with the fabric so that the bumpy side of the interfacing is to the right side of the fabric. Stitch on the drawn line. Cut out the shape leaving at least 1/8" allowance around the shape. Separate the interfacing from the fabric by pinching the interfacing with your fingers and gently pulling away from fabric. Cut a slit in the interfacing large enough to allow for turning. Turn the appliqué right side out, push out the fabric at the seam. Position the appliqué on quilt top and press in place. Permanently adhere your appliqué to your quilt by stitching on the very edge of it by hand or machine. When in doubt, always follow the manufacturer s instructions on any interfacing to yield the best results. Yo-Yos Draw a circle 2 to 2-1/2 times the finished size of the yo-yo (a coffee cup is a great size for 1-5/8 finished yo-yos). Thread a needle with an 18 length of strong thread and knot the end. Beginning at any spot along the edge of a circle, wrong side facing you, fold over 1/8 allowance to the wrong side and start a running stitch to hold the folded edge in place. Continue folding and stitching, drawing the thread taut as you go. When you reach the starting point, take a few backstitches to secure. Smooth the ruffled circle to form the yo-yo (the center of the yo-yo will be the gathered outer edge). Quilted In Christ The Great Divide Page 5

Techniques Used in Sewing this Pattern Diagonal Seams Method In this method, you will be sewing a square to the corner of another larger square, rectangle, or strip to end up with a contrasting triangle at the corner or end of the square/rectangle/strip. To do this, cut corner square(s) to the size specified in pattern and draw a diagonal line on the wrong side. Layer this square in the corner of the block or strip as directed in the pattern, right sides together, with the diagonal line running from one side of the block/strip to the next adjacent side of the block/strip. Stitch on the drawn line (solid line). Trim the excess fabric behind the drawn line, leaving a 1/4" seam allowance of fabric (dashed line). Open corner triangle out and press. Repeat for each corner triangle called for in the pattern, making sure you place the diagonal line in the right direction. Diagrams below are for completing a Flying Geese unit from the upper diagram units. Quilted In Christ The Great Divide Page 6

Ready, Set, Sew Skill Level: Quilt Size: Intermediate Beginner 30 x 30 (approximate) General Instructions 1. Read all instructions before starting any quilting project. Instructions given are for rotary cutting and machine piecing. Copy templates, if included, as often as necessary. Fabrics Based on width 100% medium weight cotton fabrics (Yardage is generously calculated to allow for cutting & sewing mistakes.) 1/3 yard dark orange batik 1/3 yard gold batik 1/3 yard green batik 1/3 yard earthy batik 1/4 yard dark brown batik 2/3 yard light batik or cotton print for background 1/2 yard tan print for binding square of backing and batting Coordinating sewing thread, 1 spool Coordinating pearl cotton if hand quilting, or Quilting thread, 1 spool Tools Sewing Machine Rotary Cutter and Mat Scissors Iron and Ironing Board Quilting Rulers and Square-Up Rulers Marking Pencil, as needed Hand Needles, optional, depending upon pattern Basting Pins, optional Quilting Exhortation (Encouragement) A divide in the quilting process helps to conquer small and large projects against the quilt project enemy called time. Break out pattern instructions into small chunks, complete the chunks as you have time, and you will be done in no time. Psalm 90:12: Teach us to number our days and recognize how few they are; help us to spend them as we should. Psalm 96:1-2: Sing a new song to the Lord! Sing it everywhere around the world! Sing out his promises! Bless his name. Each day tell someone that he saves. 2. Wash and press fabrics before use. For quilts that will be displayed or used lightly, and when desiring to have crisp fabric for sewing, washing can be omitted. You decide, but do test for color-fastness, especially on batik fabrics. 3. Sew a sample block before cutting fabric for the entire quilt. I strongly recommend that you cut fabric as you progress through each step to prevent waste due to shortage. 4. Use 100% cotton medium weight fabrics for best results. 5. Use a ¼ seam allowance unless otherwise indicated. 6. Stitch with fabrics right sides together unless otherwise indicated. 7. Press seams after sewing whenever possible steam or no steam, you decide (steam stretches fabric). 8. Fabrics in the instructions may not be representative of the fabrics show in the finished quilt photo. 9. Seam allowances are not shown in the piecing diagrams; however, your units will have the ¼ seam allowance on all sides. Know that you have not made a mistake. Your pieced units will resemble the diagrams after you have stitched your units into the final quilt top. 10. Follow the manufacturer s directions for proper use of your tools and materials. 11. ALWAYS SIGN YOUR QUILT! Your quilt is not finished until it is signed. Create a general, or fancy, label using muslin and permanent pens to write your name, date of quilt completion, city and state, name of the quilt, and any other pertinent information on your label. Help the next generation keep up with quilt history. 12. REMEMBER: God made man in his likeness (Genesis 1:27), but we are not perfect. Strive, but do not stress, to achieve straight stitching, pointy points, and matching seams all of which come with practice and patience over time. Enjoy the time-honored tradition of quilting while you stitch. Thank you for purchasing a Quilted In Christ quilt pattern. God s blessings to you! Quilted In Christ The Great Divide Page 7

Assemble the Block Units Half Square Blocks Make 2 sets Set 1 Dark Orange batik and Gold batik Cut 2 4 strips dark orange batik; from the strips, cut 13 4 squares, and cut each square in half diagonally; cut 1 3-1/2 square Cut 2 4 strips gold batik; from the strips, cut 13 4 squares, and cut each square in half diagonally Use assembly line sewing method on page 5 to stitch the dark orange half square triangles to the gold half square triangles, right sides together. Cut the units apart. At the ironing board, press the seams behind the dark orange batik (or press the seams open). Square up the blocks to measure 3-1/2. Set 2 Medium Green batik and Earthy batik Cut 2 4 strips medium green batik; from the strips, cut 13 4 squares, and cut each square in half diagonally; cut 1 3-1/2 square Cut 2 4 strips earthy batik; from the strips, cut 13 4 squares, and cut each square in half diagonally Use assembly line sewing method to stitch the medium green half square triangles to the earthy half square triangles, right sides together. Cut the units apart. At the ironing board, press the seams behind the medium green batik (or press the seams open). Square up the blocks to measure 3-1/2. Square-in-a-square Variation Block Make 3 Cut 1 2 strip brown batik; cut 14 2 squares from the strip (8 will be used in the 4-patch and border assembly steps later) Cut 1 3-1/2 strip brown batik; cut 3-3-1/2 squares from the strip Cut 2 2 strips light background print; cut 6 2 x 3-1/2 rectangles and cut 6 2 x 5-1/4 rectangles from the strips Stitch a 2 x 3-1/2 light rectangle to 2 opposite sides of the brown batik squares. Press the seams behind the brown batik squares. Quilted In Christ The Great Divide Page 8

Assemble the Block Units Stitch a brown batik square to one end of each 2 x 5-1/4 light rectangle. Press the seams behind the light rectangles. Stitch a light/brown rectangle unit to the top and bottom of each 3-1/2 square unit as shown. Press the seams behind the light rectangles. Trim the rectangle units even with the edge of the blocks. Square up the blocks to measure 6-1/2. 4-Patch Units Make 2 Gather 4 of the 2 brown batik squares previously cut on page 8 From light background scraps, cut 4 2 light squares Stack the squares in 2 piles of light squares and 2 piles of brown squares, 2 in each pile, right sides up. Arrange the piles as shown. Use assembly line sewing to stitch the squares into rows; and then stitch the rows together. From the wrong side, press the seams flat in the direction they were stitched. Square up the units to measure 3-1/3. Inner Borders Cut 3 2 strips light background print; from the strips, cut 2 2 x 19 strips and 2 2 x 21 strips Gather 2 of the brown batik squares previously cut on page 8 Stitch a brown square to one end of each 2 x 21 strip. Outer Borders Cut 4 2 strips light background print Gather 2 of the brown batik squares previously cut on page 8 Stitch a brown square to one end of 2 light background strips. Quilted In Christ The Great Divide Page 9

Assemble the Quilt Top Units Using 12 half squares from set 1, create the two units shown: one unit is made up of 4 half squares, and the other unit is made up of 8 half squares. For each unit, arrange the half squares, stitch them into vertical rows, and then stitch the rows together. Be careful not to flip flop the half squares while stitching check the arrangement before sewing the final seam that joins the rows. Repeat the steps above using 12 half squares from set 2 to create one of each of the following units. Pressing the seams of these units I recommend pressing the seams of these units after you have them stitched into the center quilt top unit. This way allows you to flip the seams in the direction you need to match them to the next unit, which may be different for each unit. Experienced quilters may plan ahead on seam direction. Quilted In Christ The Great Divide Page 10

Assemble the Quilt Top Units Set 1 Pieced Borders Right side border: Arrange 7 half squares from set 1 and stitch into a row as shown. Top of quilt pieced border: Arrange 7 half squares, 1-4-patch, and the 3-1/2 dark orange square; stitch into a row as shown. Set 2 Pieced Borders Left side border: Arrange 7 half squares from set 2 and stitch into a row as shown. Bottom of quilt pieced border: Arrange 7 half squares, 1 4-patch, and the 3-1/2 green square; stitch into a row as shown. Pressing the seams of these units Press the seams of the left and right pieced borders in any one direction. The seams at the half squares of the top and bottom borders may be pressed in any one direction, while the seams that join the 4-patch units and the green and dark orange squares should be pressed toward the half squares to make the best match with the side borders later. Start quilt top assembly by arranging the units into vertical rows as shown. Stitch the units into rows and then stitch the rows together. Quilted In Christ The Great Divide Page 11

Assemble the Quilt Top Stitch the light inner borders to the quilt top. The 2 x 19 strips are sewn to the sides of the quilt top first; and then the strips with the brown squares are stitched to the top and bottom of the quilt top as shown. Press seams away from the quilt top. Ignore this line on the top and bottom borders; they are only a function of the design software and are not present in your piecing instructions. Next, add the pieced borders to the quilt top. Stitch the right and left borders on first; then add the top and bottom borders. Press seams away from the quilt top. Your Notes Here Quilted In Christ The Great Divide Page 12

Assemble the Quilt Top Add the light background outer borders. Stitch a 2 light background strip to the right and left sides of the quilt first. Trim the border strips even with the edge of the quilt top. Press the seams away from the quilt top. Add the top and bottom borders with the brown squares to the quilt top as shown; trim the border strips even with the edge of the quilt top. Press the seams away from the quilt top. Almost done! Check your sewing. Lay out your quilt top on the floor or other large surface. The dark brown batik squares should create a diagonal line through the quilt design, separating the sets of half squares. Quilted In Christ The Great Divide Page 13

Layer, Quilt, Bind, & Sign Cut batting and backing fabric to measure ; or at least 2 larger than the quilt top on all sides. Layer as follows: Backing, wrong side up; center batting on top of backing; center quilt top on batting. Baste as desired. Quilt as desired. This quilt was hand stitched-in-the-ditch and outline quilted using pearl cotton and a crewel needle. Bind as desired. Fabric requirements assume straight binding will be used. For this method, cut 4 3 strips of binding print (one of the fabric prints used in the quilt or another selection of your choice). Stitch the strips end to end, right sides together. At the ironing board, begin folding the strip lengthwise with wrong sides inside, and press the fold. Continue along the entire length of the strip. Stitch the binding to the quilt top, miter at the corners. Trim the backing and batting even with the edges of the quilt top. Fold the binding to the back of the quilt top and hand or machine stitch in place. Optional Hanging Sleeve. Add the hanging sleeve after the quilting is done and before the binding is stitched in place. A simple sleeve uses an 8 strip of muslin or other fabric (piece lengths of muslin strips to get the width you need for the size of your quilt). Fold the strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides on the inside, and press the fold. Pin the sleeve to the top edge of the quilt top, aligning the raw edges with top of the trimmed quilt, and folding the sides of the sleeve inward about 1-1/2 from sides of quilt top. Stitch the bottom edge (fold) of the hanging sleeve to the quilt top taking shallow stitches into the backing (the stitches will show on the front if you stitch deeper than the batting and backing). Turn the binding to the back of the quilt top and stitch in place, covering the raw edges of the hanging sleeve as you sew. For smaller quilts, reduce the width of the strips to approximately 4-5 inches instead of 8 inches. Label. Add a simple or fancy label to the back of your quilt I add mine to the bottom backside of the quilt before the last of the binding is stitched in place. That way, at least two raw edges of the label are covered by the binding. Include your name, name of the pattern, date quilt was finished, your city and state, the name of the recipient, and any other pertinent information you would like to mention.
