9 Instructions Pre-Cut Instructions 1. Print out the necessary pages from the PDF of the appliquè pattern(s). 2. Mark the right side of the pattern pieces so you ll know which direction to lay the pattern on the fabric. 3. Lightly spray the wrong side of the pattern pieces with temporary adhesive spray and allow it to set for a few minutes. 4. Place the pattern pieces on the right side of the fabric and carefully cut them out. PHOTO 1 5. Sew the placement stitch on your hooped fabric. PHOTO 2 6. With the paper still stuck to the right side of the appliqué fabric, spray the wrong side of the fabric with temporary spray adhesive. 7. Place the fabric inside the placement stitch, so that it completely covers the placement stitch and then remove the paper pattern. PHOTO 3 8. Sew the tackdown. PHOTO 4 9. Sew the remainder of the design and repeat for any remaining pieces. PHOTO 5 NOTE: The patterns are sized for the designs as they were made. If you resize the design, you will need to resize the pattern the same amount. You can print out the pattern at the normal size then copy it on a copy machine at the changed size. For example, resize the designs to 80%, resize the printed pattern to 80%. TIP: When Printing the patterns, make sure that the Fit to page option is UNCHECKED in the Print Dialog Box. Print the appliqué patterns from the thread chart. Cut out each of the appliqué fabrics with the patterns. Trim the background fabric to 15" x 20" (or large enough for the Jumbo/Maxi Hoop). Hoop background fabric with one layer OESD HeavyWeight Tear Away and one layer OESD Ultra Clean and Tear. Stitch design number or on background fabric. At each placement stitch, peel the paper backing away from the back of the Fuse and Fix on the back side of the appliqué fabric. Stick to background fabric, aligning the appliqué with the placement line. Finish stitching the design according to the thread chart. Cutting From the Embroidered Block: Trim to 10" x 14 ½" From the Red Fabric: 2-2.5" x 14.5" From the Yellow Fabric 2-1.5" x 14.5" Photo 1 From the Black Fabric: 2-9" x 14.5" Piecing the Front Using Bernina foot #37, sew the red pieces to either side of the embroidered block using a ¼" seam allowance. 22 Press toward the red strip. Sew the yellow pieces to either side of the block using a ¼" seam allowance. Press toward the red strip. Insert the gold cording into Bernina foot #12. Attach to the machine. Thread the needle with thread to blend with gold cording. Couch the gold cording to the pillow front along the red seam, adjusting stitch width and length to accommodate the cording. PHOTO 2 Trim the pillow top to 14.5" x 14.5" PHOTO 3 Prepping the Back Fold over and press ¼" on the 14 ½" length side of one back rectangle, fold and press ¼" again. PHOTO 4 Using Bernina foot #37, sew along the folded edge, increasing your stitch length for a topstitch. Repeat for the other rectangle. 24 Merry Holiday Twinkling Stars Wallhanging Instructions Supplies ⅝ yd Red fabric ⅝ yd Yellow fabric 1 ½ yd Black fabric 1 ¼ yard for quilt backing 46" x 46" piece of thin quilt batting 182 running inches of binding Rotary cutting equipment, including a square ruler that measures at least 20" x 20" Isacord threads (see thread chart) OESD Bobbin thread OESD HeavyWeight Tear Away Embroidery Cut a 15" (or tall enough for your embroidery hoop) strip of black fabric. From this strip, cut four 10" (or wide enough for your embroidery hoop) pieces. Cut four pieces of OESD HeavyWeight Tear Away large enough to hoop. For each design, hoop a piece of black background fabric with a layer of OESD HeavyWeight Tear Away. Stitch four tile blocks of your choice sample uses designs , , , and Follow the thread chart for recommended colors. When embroidery is complete, Remove fabric from hoop, tear away excess stabilizer, and press. Set aside. 25 Assemble the Wonky Star Blocks Stack the red and yellow squares; slice in half diagonally to create 16 triangles of each color. PHOTO 1 For each block, you will need: 8 black squares, the background 8 Red or 8 Yellow triangles, the star points 1 each embroidered block, the center of the star Select 4 of the black background squares and 4 of the star point triangles. Place one triangle right sides together with one square as shown. The long edge of the triangle will extend past the edges of the square, and the 90-degree angle of the triangle will be within the square. For each block you will change the angle of the triangle to create the wonky-ness of the star. TIP: Ensure that when the triangle is flipped and ironed to the correct side, it extends past the edges of the background square. Cross the tip of the triangle over center on both edges of the background block in order to allow for a ¼" seam on each side. PHOTO 2 Stitch the triangle to the background square along the long edge, sewing ¼" from the triangle edge. Trim away the excess background fabric. PHOTO 3 Press away from the background fabric. Repeat for each of the four background squares. Sew the remaining 4 triangles to the opposite side of these 4 background blocks as with the first triangle. The triangles can overlap, or leave a gap just ensure that when flipped, the triangle will extend past the background square. Stitch and trim as with the first triangles. PHOTOS 4, 5 & 6 Using the background fabric as a guide, trim the block to 5 ¾". PHOTO 7 Arrange the completed star points in a 9 patch layout with the embroidered center block and four plain background squares as shown. PHOTO 8 Sew together in 3 rows using a ¼" seam. Press the top and bottom rows toward the star points. Press the center row away from the embroidered block. PHOTO 9 Finish the block by sewing the top and bottom rows to the center row, nesting the seams. Press these seams away from the center block. PHOTO 11 Cut the remaining two long red and yellow rectangles in half once diagonally, but make cuts along the opposite diagonal to produce long triangles that are mirror images of the set you just cut. PHOTO 12 Choose four like yellow triangles that are cut as shown in the upper left portion of the photo. Align a triangle with a red-star block, right Photo 12 Photo 13 sides together and its 90-degree corner aligned with the top corner of a block as shown in the photo above. 26 Merry Holiday Twinkling Stars Wallhanging Instructions Working in a counter-clockwise direction, add a second triangle to the block, matching 90-degree corners. The tail of the second triangle will extend past the wider edge of the first triangle. PHOTO 14 Press the seam allowance towards the triangle. Moving counter-clockwise again, add a third and fourth triangle. Press seam allowances towards the triangle after each addition. After sewing the last triangle, align the unsewn edge of the first triangle with the block again, extending it over the wide edge of the fourth triangle. Complete the seam, backstitching a few stitches over the original seam line and then continuing to the end of the triangle. Press seam allowance towards the triangle. PHOTO 15 Repeat the steps above with the matching set of red triangles attaching to one of the yellowstar blocks. Use the same method to sew the remaining triangles to the remaining star blocks, matching the red triangles with the yellow star block and the yellow triangles with the red star block. This set of triangles are mirror images of the first, and are sewn to the block in a clockwise direction. Photo 14 Photo 15 Trim the Quilt Blocks Placing your ruler on top of the block, align its right and top edges ¼" past the upper left and upper right corner edges of the inner block. Square up the block, leaving a ¼" seam allowance past those inner block tips. You ll need to twist the ruler around a bit to get the right fit. PHOTO 16 When you feel the block is aligned, trim along the right and top edges. Turn the block around and do the same on the remaining untrimmed edges. Square up the block to 18" x 18". PHOTO 17 Repeat to trim all blocks. Photo 16 Photo 17 Sashing and Border Arrange the blocks in two rows as shown, placing vertical sashing strips between them and along outer edges. PHOTO 18 Sew sashing to blocks in each row. Press seam allowances towards the sashing. Sew horizontal sashing units together as shown, separating them with sashing squares. Press seam allowances towards the squares. Sew the quilt together, placing a horizontal sashing unit between rows and at the top and bottom of the quilt. Press seams towards sashing units. Photo 18 Finish the Quilt Make the quilt sandwich with the quilt top, batting and backing. Baste and quilt as desired. Bind using the binding strips using your preferred binding method.
