3 NOVEMBER 3 WORKSHOP Thread-Painted Landscape Chris Eichner This project can be completed with fall colors or spring colors. The homework involves selecting your fabric choices, placing some fusible web on the back LEAVING PAPER ON, and cutting the fabrics out according to the pattern. Do not fuse these pieces together. Part of your kit will include a piece of muslin backing and the actual fusing of the pieces to the muslin will take place in class. Basic sewing supplies Supply List Landscape - Seasonal Thread Painting
4 Pair of small sharp scissors Quilting gloves- optional Darning foot (free-motion foot) Fine point permanent black marking pen Machine needles: Microtex (sharp) 70/10, 80/12, Jeans 80/12 Fusible web with release paper to trace patterns Extra bobbins, filled prior to class with 50 or 60 wt. cotton, or polyester clear invisible thread- if you choose invisible be sure to wind on vertical spool holder, slowly and only 1/2 full. Small iron and surface to press on Extended surface for machine if available Machine owner manual Kit Fee: $18.00 (this includes: patterns, muslin, Sulky Super Solvy, water soluble stabilizer with printed tree pattern, Sulky Fuse n Stitch stabilizer, tulle netting, folder with complete instructions. Autumn color palette: Blue sky Light green, tan light brown-- represents the distant mountains Rust, gold, terrace cotta, cranberry---second set of mountains Gold, dark green----background of evergreen trees Green brown, rust brown----foreground Cascading stream blue-green Rocks variegated browns Threads: Rayon 40 wt., or 40 wt. polyester machine embroidery threads or 50 or 60 wt. cotton, colors of your choice (remember the season) Colors of threads to complement the fabrics with some contrast for shading, suggestion: teal, sage green, plum and burgundy are great colors for foliage and trees in addition to brown. Variegated threads 30 weight cotton are also a good choice for tree trunk Color of threads should represent the mountains, foliage, and grass. Medium and light value of color for each of the above. Dark and medium brown for trees or variegated brown Slate blue water, metallic thread for both the water and clouds. I like Sulky SLIVER # 8040 Sulky Blendables - 30 weight cotton or your favorite brand variegated green, earth tone thread Bobbin threads your choice, polyester clear invisible or Aurifil 50 wt. cotton neutral or Mettler 50 or 60 weight cotton neutral, your favorite thread Please bring a bag lunch, ½ hour break. Homework: not an option: If you have not received your pattern pack, please see Brenda Bigelow at the October meeting. If you will not be able to attend, ask someone to pick it up for you. In order to focus on thread painting and thread painted tree appliqué homework allows students more time for thread painting 1. Trace patterns onto release paper side of fusible web, cut each traced pattern piece leaving a ¼ margin beyond the line. 2. Fuse onto the corresponding fabrics; label # 1, #2 etc. and identify (distant mountain, second mountain etc.) Cut each fused piece on the cutting line with sharp scissors, leave release paper on. Placement and lightly fusing pattern pieces to muslin foundation will be accomplished in workshop. Bring sewing machine manual, knee lift, extension table if you have one. Know how to adjust stitch width, drop feed dogs, adjust tension and pre-wind your bobbins. When winding invisible polyester thread have the spool on a vertical spool holder, wind slowly, half filled. This will ensure against stretching of thread.
5 Please feel free to call with any questions: Chris Eichner or OCTOBER 6 WORKSHOP Indian Summer Lucille Amos from Quiltworx The class fee is $25 for LMQG members and has a pattern fee of $30. This pattern will contain all of the papers for making the quilt, along with instructions. The patterns are printed on tissue paper for easy tear away. The supply list is on the web site.
