1 IPSWICH METHODIST CIRCUIT ARTS AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL Date: Saturday 9 th March 2013 Venue: Age Groups: Museum Street Methodist Church, Ipswich. Age as on the date of the Festival. A. 2, 3, 4 and 5 years B. 6, 7 and 8 years C. 9, 10 and 11 years D. 12, 13 and 14 years E. 15, 16 and 17 years F. Adults Please do not write your name on any exhibits but attach to each entry, using a paperclip, a note of your NAME, AGE, CHURCH and the CLASS details. Please do not use Post its as these often fall off. Classes: See separate sheets. N.B. Only one entry per class per person. We feel that it would be fairer if no previous years entries are re-entered. In light of comments made by judges in previous years, please ensure that all entries submitted are of a standard appropriate to the entrant s age. It is at the judge s discretion as to whether first, second and third places are given in categories where there is only a small number of entries. Times: Exhibits must be at Museum Street Church by am. LATE ENTRIES CANNOT BE ACCEPTED. ONLY PRE REGISTERED ENTRIES ACCEPTED. Entries may be left at Museum Street Church between 7.30pm & 8.30pm (doors will not be open until 7.30pm and the hall must be vacated by 8.45pm) on Friday evening as well as from 8.45am on the morning of the Festival and must remain on display until the end of the festival. Visitors may view from approximately 12 noon (when the judges have finished judging all classes). NB. The variety of junk pieces used will be taken into consideration when judged. SALT DOUGH: Age Groups. All groups A F. Using salt dough make a wall hanging with an animal theme. Paint and / or varnish if desired. Maximum base size 25cms x 25cms. KEY FOB: Age Groups. All groups A F. Using any medium make a key-ring fob and attach it to a metal key ring. No kits please. Maximum size 10cms x 10cms A DECORATED MUG: Age Groups. All groups A F. Using any medium, decorate a plain mug. A FRUIT AND VEGETABLE CLOCK: Age Groups. All groups A F. Create an ornamental clock using only fruit and/or vegetables. Maximum base size 25cms x 25cms. PIPE CLEANER MODEL: Age Groups. All groups A F. Using only pipe cleaners create a creature, real or imaginary. Stick on eyes are the only acceptable accessory. Maximum base size 15cms x 15cms. 3 POETRY: Compose a poem, as detailed below, entitled Royalty. Age Groups. B. 4 lines minimum. C. 8 lines minimum. D F. 12 lines minimum. GRAPHICS: Design on a computer, in black and white or colour, as detailed below. Please do not scan existing invitations. Any type of paper or card may be used. Age Groups. B and C. Using an unfolded A4 piece of paper, design an invitation to a special occasion. Groups D F Using an A4 piece of paper, folded into four, (to create an A6 sized card), design an invitation to a special occasion. PHOTOGRAPHY: A single photo which can be black and white or coloured. No larger than 7 x 5. Your photograph must be unframed, but should be mounted on card or paper approximately A5 size. Must be original (not scanned) and taken by entrant. Age Groups. Groups A F Theme Me time ART: Using paint, ink, pencil, charcoal, felt-tipped pens or coloured pencils. Maximum size 40cms x 30cms approx. Please do not frame your work. Age Groups. Groups A and B. Create a picture of something from nature, that you would like to put on the front of a tee-shirt. Groups C F. Design a block depicting, A fair trade topic, suitable for the front of a tee-shirt. STICKY PICTURE: Age Groups. All groups A F. Using only wool, thread and buttons create a picture or pattern. Maximum size A4. MEMORY BOX: Age Groups: All groups A F. Using anything, decorate a box to create a memory box. Maximum base size approximately 35cms x 25cms. 3

4 HANGING WOODEN CHRISTMAS TREE DECORATION: Age Groups. All groups A F. Design and make, from wood, a hanging Christmas tree decoration. Decorate as desired. Wooden lolly sticks etc are acceptable as a base, however, pine cones / nuts may only be used as an adornment to a wooden base. Maximum size 15cms x 15cms. PEBBLE MODEL: Age Groups. All groups A F. Using pebbles / stones, design and make a model of your choice. Only stick on eyes are acceptable in addition to stones and pebbles. Maximum base size 15cms x 15cms. A VASE OF FLOWERS: Age Groups. All groups A F. Using anything, make a vase AND the flower /s to go in it. Real or pre-made flowers are not allowed. Maximum size of overall arrangement 20cms x 20cms. No maximum height. FLOWER ARRANGING: Age Groups. Groups A - D. Using natural items, i.e. twigs, stones, flowers and greenery, create a garden in a disposable dish. ONE non-natural item allowed. Maximum size 20cms x 30cms. Groups E and F. An arrangement entitled Tall and slender. Both groups (E&F) to use fresh flowers / foliage. No accessories to be used. Maximum base size 20cms x 20cms. Maximum height 60cms. LEMON CURD: Age Groups. Groups D F. Using your own recipe make and display a jar of lemon curd. 4

5 COOKERY: Age Groups. A. Using Rich Tea biscuits decorate using icing, dried fruit and / or glace cherries. Display 4. B. Using the recipe provided make Queen Cakes. Display 4. C. Using the recipe provided make Ginger and Orange Crunchies. Display 4. D. Using the recipe provided make Orange Yoghurt Cake. Display 3 slices. E. Using the recipe provided make Cherry Mallow Bars. Display 4. F. Using the recipe provided make Lemon Shortcake Display 3 pieces KNITTING: Age Groups. Groups B and C Using the pattern provided, knit a Knitted bag without the flower decoration. Groups D and E Using the pattern provided, knit a Knitted bag and decorate it using the pattern for the knitted flowers. If you do not wish to keep your bag it will be donated to Samaritan s Purse Charity please mark accordingly. Group F Using the pattern provided, knit a Premature Baby Set All baby sets will be donated to the Ipswich Premature Baby Unit unless clearly marked Please return. STITCHING: Age Groups. Groups A - E. Using any type of stitch, thread and background material create a coaster with an initial. Group F. Using any type of stitch, thread and background material create a greetings card with a single initial. Please do not cover the back of your work and clearly mark whether it is a kit or your own design. BIBLE READING: Using the Good News Bible. Age Groups. B. Psalm 100, verses 1-3. C. Psalm 150. D. Psalm 147 verses 1-9. E. Psalm 8 verses 1-9 5

Duet of your own choice. *VOCAL SINGING GROUP: A piece of your own choice plus a set piece. Please apply for music. INSTRUMENTAL CLASS: There are no individual instrumental classes this year. Each entrant may play a maximum of two different instruments but must nominate one to be judged. Age Groups. Groups B E. A short piece of your own choice. GROUP PERFORMANCE UNDER 18: Age Group. All performers to be under 18 years of age. Vocal, dance and/or instrumental for 3 or more performers. Perform a piece of your own choice. GROUP PERFORMANCE ANY AGE: Age Group. Performers of any age. Vocal, dance and /or instrumental for 3 or more performers. Perform a piece of your own choice. Maximum performance length approximately 5 minutes. 6

Age Group C There was an old man with a beard, Who said, It is just as I feared! Two owls and a hen, Four larks and a wren, Have all built their nests in my beard! Age Group D Inside the fridge half-finished milk Is lumpy and it s glowing. The cartons are all starting To mutate and they are growing. The crockery mountain in the sink Is coated in green lime And the room that time forgot Is left to rot in gunge and slime. 7

8 COOKERY RECIPES QUEEN CAKES 100g margarine 100g caster sugar 2 medium eggs 100g self-raising flour 50g currants Method 1. Heat the oven to 190 C / 375 F / Gas Mark Cream margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. 3. Beat in eggs one at a time, adding a little flour with each. 4. Gently fold in remaining flour. 5. Add the currants and gently stir in so evenly distributed. 6. Spoon mixture into bun cases, half filling each one. Should make about 18 cakes. 7. Bake for about 15 minutes until firm. GINGER AND ORANGE CRUNCHIES 250g self-raising flour 350g soft light brown sugar 1 ¼ teaspoons of ground ginger 100g butter / margarine (softened) Grated rind of 1 orange 1 egg Method 1. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. 2. Beat in the egg. 3. Sieve the flour and ginger, and stir into the creamed mixture with the orange rind. 4. Work into a smooth dough. 5. Break off pieces about the size of a walnut and roll into balls. 6. Flatten slightly and place well apart on a greased baking tray. 7. Bake in a preheated oven at 150 C / 300 F / Gas Mark 2 for approximately 25 minutes. 8. Cool on a wire rack. 8

9 ORANGE YOGHURT CAKE 110g butter / margarine (softened) 110g caster sugar 2 eggs (beaten) 175g self-raising flour 150g natural yoghurt 3 oranges (zested and juiced) 10 sugar cubes Method 1. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and whisk until light and creamy. 2. Gradually beat in the eggs. 3. Stir in the flour, yoghurt and orange zest from 2 oranges 4. Spoon into a greased / lined 900g (2lb) loaf tin. 5. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 C / 350 F / Gas Mark 4 for approximately minutes until risen and golden. 6. Remove from the tin and leave to cool. 7. Put the orange juice, the remaining zest and 4 sugar cubes into a small pan and bring to the boil. Leave to simmer for 4 to 5 minutes until syrupy. 8. Lightly crush the remaining sugar cubes and sprinkle over the cake. Drizzle over the orange syrup. 9. Cut into 8 slices. CHERRY MALLOW BARS 100g digestive biscuits (crushed) 50g butter 225g marshmallows 150ml fresh milk 10ml gelatine (2 teaspoons) 150g chocolate digestive biscuits (crushed) 50g glace cherries (quartered) Method 1. Melt the butter and stir in the plain digestive biscuits. 2. Press into a greased 18cm (7inch) square tin. Chill. 3. Warm marshmallows in milk in a bowl over a pan of simmering water for 15 minutes. Stir frequently until melted. Chill for 30 minutes. 4. Sprinkle gelatine over 20ml of hot water in a bowl over a pan of hot water. Stir until dissolved. 5. Fold chocolate biscuits and cherries into the marshmallow mixture. 6. Stir in the gelatine. 7. Spoon over the biscuit base. 8. Chill until set and then cut into 16 bars. 9

10 LEMON SHORTCAKE 100g butter / margarine 75g sugar 1 large egg 100g plain flour 100g self-raising flour Filling 50g butter 50g sugar 1 large egg 2 level teaspoons of grated lemon rind 2 tablespoons of lemon juice Method 1. Cream the butter / margarine and sugar together. 2. Beat in the egg. 3. Gradually work in the flours. 4. Knead the dough into a ball. Then wrap and chill in a fridge for ½ to 1 hour. 5. Put all the filling ingredients into a basin and place over a pan of very gently simmering water. 6. Stir until the sugar and butter/ margarine have dissolved and the mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon (consistency of thick double cream). Cool. 7. Set the oven to 180 C / 350 F / Gas Mark 4 8. Cut the dough in half. Roll one half into a round and use to line a deep 7 inch fluted flan tin, pressing the mixture up the side of the tin to make a shallow wall. 9. Pour the cooled lemon filling over the shortcake base. 10. Roll out the rest of the dough to about a 7 inch round, for the lid, and place over the top of the lemon filling. 11. Press the edges firmly together. 12. Place the tin on a baking sheet and bake above the centre of the oven for minutes. 13. Cut into 8 pieces. 10

11 PREMATURE BABY SET 50g 4 ply yarn Size 3.25mm needles (10) JACKET Cast on 93 sts. Knit 5 rows. Proceed in pattern as follows: KNITTING PATTERNS 1st row K5 (yarn round needle P1 P3tog P1 yon K1) to last 4 Sts K 4 2nd row K4 purl to last 4 Sts K4 3rd row Knit 4th row as 2nd Repeat last 4 rows until work measures 11.5 cm (4.5ins) ending after a wrong side row Knit 2 rows Divide for armholes as follows making a buttonhole on first row K2 yarn forward K2 tog K19 Cast off 4sts K39 including st on needle Cast off 4sts Knit to end Next row Knit (error on pattern please omit this instruction) Continue in stocking stitch with garter stitch border (every row knit) on first set of Sts as follows 1st row K4 purl to end 2nd row K1 Slip1 K1 pass slip stitch over knit to end Repeat last 2 rows until15sts remain finishing at neck edge. Next row K4 Sts and slip on to a safety pin Cast off next 2sts and work to end Dec 1st at neck edge on next 3 rows, at the same time decrease at armhole edge as before, continue until 2sts remain Purl 2 tog Rejoin yarn to back Sts purl to end Next row K1 slip1 K1 pass slip stitch over, Knit to last 3sts, K2tog K1 Next row Purl, repeat last 2 rows until 17sts remain, leave on stitch holder for neckband 11

12 Rejoin yarn to remain in stitches, purl to last 4 Sts, K4 Next row K to last 3sts, K2 tog K1 Continue as first side reversing all shaping and making buttonhole on 8th row SLEEVES Cast on 26 Sts and Knit 5 rows Continue in stocking stitch increasing 1 stitch at each end of fifth row, and 1sts at each end of the two following 6th rows, 32sts, continue to 9.5cm (3.75ins) Cast off 2sts at the beginning on next 2 rows Next row K1 Slip1 K1 psso, knit to last 3 Sts, K2 tog, K1 Next row purl Continue as above 2 rows to 4sts, and leave on safety pin for neckband NECKBAND Knit first 4 Sts on needle, pick up and knit 10sts from right front neck, 4sts from top of sleeve, 17sts from back, 4sts from top of sleeve, 10sts from left front neck, and 4sts from safety pin, 53sts Knit 5 rows making buttonhole on 2nd row, cast off Sew up armhole, sleeve seams, sew on 3 buttons HAT Cast on 63sts Knit 3 rows and continue in pattern as follows: 1st row K1* (K1 yarn round needle P1. P3 tog P1 yarn over needle)* repeat from* to last 2 Sts K2 2nd row Purl 3rd row Knit 4th row Purl Repeat last 4 rows 4 times more, and 1st and 2nd row once more Shape crown 1st row K6* Slip 1 K2 tog pass slip stitch over, K5 repeat from* to last stitch K1 2nd row Purl 3rd row K5* Slip 1 K2 tog pass slip stitch over,k3 repeat from* to last two stitches K2 12

You could leave part seam open, and attach ribbons if you wish. SOCKS No.12 needles (2.75) Cast on 26sts loosely work 14 rows in K1 P1 rib Change to No.10 needles (3.25). Work 2 rows in stocking stitch Shape Instep 1st row K17 turn 2nd row P8 turn. Working on these 8sts knit 8 rows in stocking stitch. Break off yarn. Right side facing, rejoin yarn to instep, pick up and knit 8sts along side edge of instep Knit 8sts off left hand needle, pick up, and knit 8sts along other side of instep (42sts) Work 3 rows in stocking stitch Shape Foot 1st row K1 K2 together K12.K3tog.K6.K3tog.K12.K2tog.K1.(36sts) 2nd row Purl 3rd row K1 K2 together K10. K3tog. K4.K3tog.K10.K2tog.K1.(30sts) 4th row Purl Cast off. Sew up seam. 13

14 Knitted Bag Groups B, C, D and E 2 balls of double knitting wool in complimentary colours. 1 pair size 4.5mm needles (size 7) Cast on 25 stitches using both balls of wool (double thickness). Continue in garter stitch (every row plain) until work measures approximately 13 inches. Cast off. Sew up both long sides, right side out. For the strap cut 18 stands of wool 60 inches long. Tie a knot in one end approximately 1½ inches from the end. Dividing the stands into 3 groups and plat to 1½ inches from the end and tie another knot. Sew the strap onto the bag securely, along the two seam lines, letting the knots hang from the ends. Trim the ends to the same length. Groups D and E only Decorate the front of the bag with beads, buttons or knitted flowers as follows: With one colour and size 4mm needles (size 8), cast on 31 stitches. Knit one cast off 5, repeat this to the end. Pull wool through the 5 remaining stitches, using a sewing needle and sew the two ends together to make up a flower. Sew into place using the contrasting colour 14
