2 Skill Level: Intermediate Sizes: To fit Kidz n Cats 18 dolls, and other 18" dolls with similar (slim) body measurements. Will for American Girl doll if skirt is made 1 longer, no other alterations to the pattern are needed. Yarn: Variegated yarn (CC1) Ambiente by Schoppel, 100% merino superwash, 50gr/155m (170yds), color 2184 (yellow, teal, rust, spring green). Yellow yarn (CC2) Zarina by Filatura di Crosa, 100% extrafine merino superwash, 50 gr/180yds (1.75oz/150m), color Teal yarn (MC) Realto 4 ply by Debbie Bliss, 100% extrafine merino superwash, 50gr/180m (198yds), color Needles: 2.75mm straight needles 2.00mm straight needles (for dress bodice) Gauge: 7st x 9r = 1 inch (on stockinet stitch swatch) 6st x 14 rs = 1 inch (on 2-color slip stitch pattern of the skirt) Use any yarn and any size needles if that gives you the required gauge. Please, take time to check the gauge, or the finished outfit will not fit. Design Notes The outfit consists of a simple straight sleeveless dress with modified kimono armhole, a short shrug/bolero and a hat. The skirt of the dress is worked in slip stitch pattern with yarn being changed every two rows. The natural gauge of the slip stitch pattern makes the skirt look as having an A-line shape. The armholes of the dress do not have bind-off stitches, but just two k2togs slanted in opposite directions. The top portion of an armhole is shaped by making additional stitches on several rows. The neckline is finished by a 3sts I-cord bind-off. The back of the dress has an opening from the neckline down to the skirt, snap closures are camouflaged by small decorative buttons. The shrug/bolero has a back and two front pieces. All pieces are worked straight, shaping on the front is achieved by combination of rib and garter stitches. Hat is worked in slip st rib. It is finished with a decorative button. 2

R8: with CC2 *k1, slyb, repeat to end of row. R9: k all. R10-R48: repeat R6-R9 10 more times (for R49 see below), changing colors every 2 rows. Skirt should measure 4 from the cast-on edge. R49: with CC1- p all. R50: with CC1 *k1, p1, repeat to end of row. R51- R53: work 1x1 rib straight as established. R54: with MC and 2.00 mm needles continue 1x1 rib straight until the work measures 6 from the caston edge (18 rs). On the last WS row (R71) place markers after 21st and 62nd sts (do not count edge sts). (21 sts + M+ 41 sts + M + 21 sts, not counting edge sts). R72: work 1x1 rib to two sts before the first marker, k2 tog slanted to right, replace marker; with new yarn k2 tog slanted to left, work 1x1 rib to two sts before second marker, k2 tog slanted to right, replace marker; with new yarn k2tog slanted to left, work 1x1 rib to end of row. (21 sts + M + 39 sts + M + 21 sts, counting edge sts). Stitches are marked for front and both backs. (If you don t have another ball of yarn, wind up the needed additional lengths from the center pull.) Sew up shoulder seams. Work I-cord bind-off to finish the neckline as follows: With RS pick up stitches along the neckline. On the next row, with RS facing, cast on 3 sts using the knitted cast on method. Those 3 sts will be end up sitting on the left needle in front of the picked up neckline stitches. 1. Knit the first 2 sts. 2. Knit 2 tog through the back loop (the last st of the I-cord and the first st of the neckline). 3. Slip these 3 sts back to left needle purlwise (don t twist stiches). Repeat steps 1-3 until 3 sts remain on left needle. B/o these 3 sts using traditional b/o. 6

7 Bolero shrug: Back: With CC2 and 2.75mm needles cast on 35 sts (33sts + 2 edge sts). R1(WS): k all. R2(RS) : k all. R3: k all. R4: k all. R5: p all. Continue in st st straight until work measures 3.5 from the cast-on edge. End with RS. K all on next 3 rows. B/o all sts. Finished measurement of the back piece is 4 (height) x 4.75 (width). Front (make two): Cast on 38 sts (36 sts + 2 edge sts). Try to cast on slightly tighter than usual. Work 1x1 rib for 10 rows, end with RS row. K all on next 3 rows. Do not over tighten these rows. B/o looser than usual. The finished piece will have the shape of a semicircle. If the semicircle doesn t lay flat, redo the bind-off making it even looser. Arrange both fronts with RS facing you and bind-offs facing each other. The cast-on edge will make front armhole. The b/o edge will make front band of the bolero. Side edges will make shoulder and side seams See sketch and picture for assembly of the bolero shrug. Sleeves (make two): Cast on 37 sts (35 sts + 2 edge sts).. Work 3 rows in 1x1 rib. R4(RS): k all. R5(WS): p all. Work straight in st st until knitting measures 1 from the cast-on edge. End with WS row. While continue working in st st, shape the sleeve cap as follows: B/o 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st at beg of next 2 rows. K 1 row (RS). P 1 row (WS). Dec 1 st at beg of next 2 rows x 6 times. Dec 2 st at beg of next 2 rows. K2tog throughout the row. B/o all stitches. 7

8 Hat: With any yarn and 2.75mm needles cast on 58 sts (56 sts + 2 edge sts).. Work 3 rows in 1x1 rib. On R4 start slip stitch rib and work it straight until knitting measures 4 from the cast-on edge. End with WS row. Work 2 rows in 1x1 rib ( i.e work p1 instead of *yo, slyb* ). Work 1 row of k2tog and one row of p2tog. Keep open stitches on the needle. Clip of yarn leaving approx. 10 of its length, thread yarn end into a tapestry needle and run it through all open sts, slip stitches off the knitting needle. Pull the yarn tight to close the crown opening, secure it with a knot. Sew up the back seam starting at the cast-on and going up to the hat s crown. Do not over tighten the seam. Sew on a pretty button or any other decoration of your choice onto the hat. Finishing: Sew snaps on the back of the dress. Sew small buttons on the left back of the dress to cover up the snaps. 8
