2 2014 Quilts: A World of Beauty Judged Show Rules OBJECTIVES The objective of the Judged Show is to promote and encourage the art and appreciation of quiltmaking and wearable art. We strive to encourage excellence in quiltmaking and to educate quilters and the general public by presenting the finest examples of traditional and contemporary quilts and art garments that the members can produce by: 1. Providing an exhibition and competition to spotlight the current work of IQA quiltmakers; and 2. Rewarding excellence in design and craftsmanship through the presentation of awards based on qualified and impartial judging. Quilts/garments are to be entered for judging in the following categories. IQA and its jurors or judges reserve the right to move an entry to a category other than the one in which it was entered without notifying the entrant. Final placement will be at the discretion of the judges. CATEGORIES AND DEFINITIONS Art-Abstract Quilts must be of original forms and compositions, the emphasis being on color, line, and design. The category features abstract, cutting edge, and non-literal quilts, and is divided into small and large subcategories. See size definitions below. Art-Miniature Quilts must be of original forms and compositions. This category features any type of art quilt measuring less than or equal to 24 in (61 cm) on each side. Art-Naturescapes Quilts must be of original forms and compositions. Quilts in this category may be any size within the rules except miniature. Art-Painted Surface Quilts must be of original forms and compositions. 5 RULES ENTRY DEADLINE: May 29, Each entry must be the work of at least one (1) current IQA member. 2. Quilts that have been made by two people (including quilting stitches) may be entered in the show and must be a collaboration between two artists and not a business arrangement or part of a work-for-hire agreement. See definition above. The submitting entrant must be a member. Both quiltmakers must be named. 3. For a Group quilt, categorized by three (3) or more quiltmakers, the submitting entrant must have worked on the quilt and must be a member. The quilt must be a collaboration and not part of a business arrangement or work-for-hire agreement. See definition above. 4. Each entry must have been completed after January 1, 2012 and may not have been accepted into any previous IQA Judged Show. Quilts that have been altered, amended, or modified at any date after completion will be required to retain the original completion date. 5. Members may enter up to two (2) quilts/garments to be juried for the show. If you are the second quiltmaker on a two-person quilt, it counts as one of your entries. If you are submitting the entry for a group, it counts as one of your entries; however, if you are a participant in the group, it does not. 6. The majority of the quilt must consist of three (3) distinct layers top, middle layer, and backing. Quilts must be quilted by hand and/or machine with three exceptions Crazy quilts, which can be tied or quilted, Cathedral Windows-style quilts, and Yo-Yo quilts. 7. No pre-quilted fabric may be used. No pre-printed wholecloth quilt tops may be used. Kit quilts will not be accepted (see Definitions). 8. No rigid frames, rods, or mounting devices, and no special lighting may accompany quilts. No rods may be sewn into the sleeves of the quilts. 9. Quilts that require special handling will not be accepted. Your quilt must be able to be stacked with other quilts and boxed and/or rolled with other quilts without potential damage to your quilt or any other quilt in the show. This determination is at the sole discretion of IQA and can result in disqualification from exhibition. If this is the case, entrant will be notified. In such cases, no fees will be refunded. Any questions should be directed to the IQA office. 10. Odd-shaped quilts and quilts with multiple panels must be mounted on black fabric containing a sleeve (see rule #11). The top half of these quilts must be sewn securely to the black fabric. The bottom half should be loose so the judges can examine the back of the quilt. (Quilts with multiple panels hanging side-by-side horizontally may mount them to a single black sleeve.) 11. A 4 in (10 cm) double sleeve must be attached to the top of the back of the entry for hanging. This sleeve should be made of a tube of lightweight cloth 4 in (10 cm) wide after sewing and as long as the piece s width. It should include ¼ in (.6 cm) ease in the back of the sleeve. It should be fastened to the back of the quilt with stitches on both its top and bottom edges so that a hanging rod may be slipped into it without touching the piece. (Instructions are on our website at Please note that, as defined by this rule, hanging tabs and other creative hanging alternatives are not considered a sleeve. Any questions should be directed to the IQA office. PLEASE NOTE: a.) Any quilt measuring longer than 86 in (218.4 cm) MUST have a second 4-in sleeve sewn to the full width of the quilt. The top of this sleeve must be 82 in (208.3 cm) to 86 in (218.4 cm) from the bottom of the quilt and must be under and not overlap the top sleeve. Why? If the length of your quilt is more than 86" in length, your quilt will be turned over at the top and will be hung using the second sleeve. b.) Any quilt measuring less than or equal to 24 in x 24 in (61 cm x 61 cm) may use a 2-in (5 cm) sleeve. Page 5 of 10

6 c.) Quilts without the correct sleeve are subject to disqualification. d.) Quilts without a sleeve will not be accepted. 12. Quilts must be labeled in a bottom corner of the back and must include the name of the quilt and the quilt maker(s). The preferred label is muslin with the information typed or printed on the label. Clearly visible embroidery is also acceptable. 13. All quilts/garments must arrive clean, undamaged, and free of strong odors in order to be judged and shown. IQA reserves the right to omit an entry from judging or display if the quality or condition does not meet standards upon hands-on inspection. IQA reserves the right to omit from exhibition any accepted piece that differs dramatically from what is represented by the entry visuals. If this is the case, entrant will be notified. In such cases, no fees will be refunded. The decision as to whether the difference is significant is entirely at IQA s discretion. 14. Entries should have a category listed on the entry form; however, IQA and its jurors or judges reserve the right to move an entry to a category other than the one in which it was entered without notifying the entrant. Final placement will be at the discretion of the judges. 15. For visuals, send two (2) digital images on a CD AND a color-correct print of the full view of the piece no larger than 4 in x 6 in (10 cm x 15 cm). No slides will be accepted. Photographs and CDs will NOT be returned. Please refer to the How to Enter section of the rules on page 7-8 for specific instructions. 16. Late entries cannot be accepted. NO telephone, fax, or entries will be allowed. Due to the large number of submissions, IQA cannot answer telephone inquiries regarding receipt of your entry package. 17. Your accepted quilt/garment must be available for judging and display from August 13 through November 2, No quilt/garment will be taken down before the end of Festival (Sunday, November 2, 2014 at 4:00 p.m.) Due to the large number of quilts/garments exhibited, items not picked up after Festival will be shipped within three weeks of the close of Festival unless special arrangements have been made. Please see the shipping instructions for specific information. 18. PLEASE NOTE THE DATES THAT WE NEED YOUR QUILT in Rule #17. If you withdraw a finalist quilt from the show for any reason other than an act of God, you will be disqualified from entering the IQA Judged Show for a period of two (2) years. If there is any question about your entry, please contact the IQA office. 19. All decisions of the jurors and judges are final. IQA reserves the right to reject any entry, including those that fail to follow the quilt contest rules. 20. All prize checks, including two-person entries and those for the Group category, will be issued in the name of the submitting entrant only for disbursement. Only one prize ribbon will be awarded, as it goes with the quilt. In the event that a two-person or group quilt wins one of the top eight named awards, only the submitting IQA member will receive the trip to fall Festival and associated benefits. 21. Any entrant who must be contacted for any information needed to complete their entry will be assessed an additional $10 fee. The entry will not be processed until payment is received and entry is complete. 22. Selling Your quilt: You may choose to offer your quilt for sale in the Quilts: A World of Beauty exhibit, with 20% of the selling price to be donated to the International Quilt Association. IQA is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Please check with you tax attorney for information on how to deduct the donation. ADDITIONAL RULES FOR WEARABLE ART Entrants should focus on fashionable and wearable garments. In addition to the rules listed above, please make note of the following: 1. Each garment must be the sole work (including quilting stitches) of one (1) current IQA member. Page 6 of 10

7 2. All garment entries must consist of a full ensemble. Example: If a vest is entered, a blouse and slacks/skirt must be included. The added portion of the ensemble may be purchased or handcrafted. A visible portion of the garment must consist of three layers and include a recognizable amount of quilting. The quilting may be through two layers, but must be visible. 5. Labels must be attached to the inside of each piece of the garment and must include the name of the maker and the title of the garment in legible type or clearly visible embroidery. FINALIST S LIABILITY/INSURANCE INFORMATION Accepted quilts/garments should be insured through the owner s individual insurance company. 9 International Quilt Association Photographing Your Quilt or Garment for Entering the Show With the abilities of today s digital cameras, you do not have to go to the expense of having your quilt entries professionally photographed. You can do it yourself plenty of quilters do and you can find out how below. Remember, your quilt s image is all that the jurors see in evaluating your quilt, so the quality of the image is extremely important. 1. Submitting images Digital images must be submitted on a CD-ROM Be sure to close, finish, or complete the CD so that it can be opened on a computer other than your own. You can check this by trying to open the CD on a different computer from the one used to make it. You may submit multiple entry visuals on one CD. Please label the CD with your name and the title(s) of your quilt(s) and/or garment(s). You may not make modifications (this includes color correction). You may crop the background, but be sure not to crop too closely to the edges. 2. Required images For quilts, send one full view of the completed quilt and one detail view. Quilting must be visible in the detail. For garments, send one full front view of the completed garment, one full back view, and one detail view. Identify each digital image with your name, the quilt title (or a portion of it, if it is long), and whether it is the full view or the detail view. Quilt Example: Garment Example: Smith _YellowDog_DETAIL.jpg Smith _YellowDog_FULL.jpg Jones_BlueGown_FRONT.jpg Jones_BlueGown_BACK.jpg Jones_BlueGown_DETAIL.jpg Also send one physical print of the full front view of the quilt or garment. This print should be no larger than 4 x 6 inches (10 x 15 cm). Write your name, title of the entry, and indicate the top on the back of each photograph. 3. Taking images We recommend using a minimum 4 MP (megapixel) digital camera, on highest resolution setting, and saving as a JPEG file. Consult your camera s instruction manual to learn how to set your camera to take high-resolution photos. (You can probably access your camera s manual online if it has been lost.) Each image should be a minimum of 1800 pixels wide on its longest side. (Note: If your image has less than 1800 pixels on the longest side, do not increase it. Instead take another picture that has higher resolution.) A video on how to resize a digital image is available on our website at Lower megapixels and resolution settings can produce poor results that will eliminate a quilt because its color, design, and detail cannot be viewed clearly. It is not uncommon to see a wonderful quilt eliminated as a finalist because the quality of the image submitted is so poor Page 9 of 10

10 that it is impossible to properly evaluate, especially the details. If you have any doubts, take another photo! 4. Working with your images If you open your photos in image editing software to crop the background, you will be asked how to save the photo when you are done. Save as a JPEG, RGB color (the default setting in most image editing programs), standard or baseline setting, and set the quality to maximum. No CMYK images or progressive setting JPEGs will be accepted. Please see our website at for a video on how to resize your image. 5. Suggestions for good photography Make sure the entire quilt is visible in the full shot. There should be no objects, people (including fingers holding a quilt), pets, or scenery in the picture. Do not try to take a pretty picture with gardens, trees, mountains, etc. in the background. The background will distract from your quilt and be a liability, not an asset. Do not drape your quilt over furniture or lay it flat on a bed or on the floor. Take photographs on a light neutral wall or background. Learn how to crop your picture (in image editing software) so that a minimum of the background shows. Practice first on other quilt images to learn what to do. Remember, there is almost always a way to undo a modification such as cropping, if you don t like the results. To take the photo, position yourself directly in front of the quilt so that you have a straight-on angle. Lighting should be as even as possible across the front of the quilt. Sometimes your best lighting is outdoors, but be careful about the time of day. Direct sunlight on the quilt can cause shadows or a glare that obscures details in the photo and can bleach out the color of your quilt. Make sure your camera is focused. If your hand is shaky, use a tripod or a solid surface for the camera. Quilting stitches and design must be visible in the detail shot, and it is helpful to choose a section of the quilt that relates to the category entered. When shooting a garment, photograph the entire ensemble on a dress form or on a person. If a model is used, photograph from the neck down only, but make sure the entire garment is visible in the full shots. Be sure to include some of the quilting in the garment detail shot. 6. Additional resources We can heartily recommend the following book and website for user-friendly information about taking digital images of quilts. These resources have been developed by quilters for quilters to help them take better photos of their work. Both quilters have won awards with their quilts, have written articles or published books, and have had their work published in several books. Much of the information contained here has been developed in cooperation with these two talented and generous women. Digital Essentials by Gloria Hansen Shoot That Quilt!
