Materials List Scintillating Stripe Sequences 2 day felting workshop by Nancy Ballesteros (Perth, Western Australia) In these two-days, we will spend the first day working on sampling stripe sequences and colour exercises before later launching into a larger felt project. For this larger project you can choose to create a striped floor rug (door matt), table-runner, placemats, cushion cover, ipad covers. Or for those more into fashion and accessories you could create a striped nuno wrap or scarf, design a length of fabric for sewing, design funky pockets, cuffs, or collars Emphasis will be placed on QUALITY FELT. Specific fulling techniques will be taught to ensure proper felting. Learn our No-Roll felting technique. Embellishment ideas to be explored as time allows. General Class Requirements: Go on-line to Pinterest, interior design books, books on rugs, etc. and find stripe patterns that inspire you. Bring a printed colour photocopy of your favorite(s), or store pictures on your phone/tablet. Another amazing tool is the Random Stripe Generator at Have a play if you have time. Choose the Stripe Widths Allowed as 1,2,3,5,8, 13. Colour Wheel - bring one if you have it. Otherwise I suspect there will be enough to share around. I particularly like a colour wheel called Colour Computer by M. Grumbacher, Inc. One A4 Plastic File Folder or some kind of slightly firm plastic that we can cut and make into rulers it needs to be plastic to be waterproof. Cut out the following widths 13cm, 8cm, 5cm, 3cm, 2cm. The length of each should be around 20-25cms. Ruler 30cm Scissors you don t mind using to cut wet wool A bucket always seems handy A few of sheets of A4 white paper and a stapler (we can share around) Notebook/pencil Name tag Lunch/water General Felting Supplies everyone should bring: Spray bottle with pump spray, just a cheap one is fine. Sprinkling water bottle bowser bulb, or milk jug with holes in top, or I will have for $3.00 sprinkle tops that go on 1.5lt plastic drink bottles if you bring one (ie like Sweppes Lemonade ) Ice Cream container, or similar small bucket with wide opening Olive Oil Soap bar Several towels Several Micro-cloths that you can use to keep your hands really dry Old Plastic bag
Fulling Equipment any of these corrugated surfaces will do: glass washboard, metal washboard, firm blue pool bubble wrap I like clipping mine inside an oil drip tray (see photo), other corrugated surfaces can be the backside of Ikea cutting boards, paint tray that has lots of ridges. In addition you could bring a rolling pin, they are good fulling tools if you have one. I also find a non-slip matt useful for putting under these tools so they don t slide. My favourite fulling equipment General Project for Everyone to complete: We will be making several Pot Holder size test samples. It will be a good way to test colour ideas for your larger project. I suggest that you bring extra wool for your project to use for these test samples, or otherwise just bring some merino wool scraps of interesting colours you can play with. We only need about 15-20gms of wool for each pot holder. It is also nice to play around with the Fibre Fusion Needle Felted Batts for these pot holders. Bring a few squares that are approx. 35cm x 35cm
DOOR RUG (MATT) PROJECT Materials List for Rug: Medium Coarse (28-35 micron Corridale/Merino) Needle Felted Batt. Dimensions: 70cm x 105cm, approximately 200gm. Choose a batt colour that is generally slightly darker than the overall colour of wool used for the top design. Suppliers: or You can also use Fibre Fusion s Needle Felted Batts however you will need to use two, possible three layers to get the weight you need for a rug: Let me know if you have some other product you might think will work and we can talk about it. Merino Wool Tops (18-21 micron) Total 400gms. Bring a grouping of colours as follows. Do the best you can, or call me for advice. Don t panic I will have some wool on hand to sell at the workshop. It will be easier if your wool tops are in at least 70cm lengths. o Three Analogous Colours. For instance you could choose three different variations of Orange (red-orange, orange, yellow-orange). You could also choose tints and shades of a colour (light orange, dark orange, bright orange). Around 175gms in total. o Two Analogous Colours that you think looks good with the other colours you have chosen. In my rug I chose two shades of green to go with my three shades of orange. Around 125gm in total o Pick two neutral colours (ie colours like: greys, browns, beiges, creams, taupe, black) Around 75gms in total o Pick two Highlights (can be dark or light in colour) or a totally unexpected colours (ie like hot pink in my rug). Around 25gms in total Felting Equipment for Rug: Painters plastic drop sheet. Try to not get the wispy thin ones. Needs to be two pieces that are about 1.5m x 2m. (builder s film from Bunnings 100um is TOO thick don t bring this). Bubble wrap, non-slip matting or bamboo blind about 1m wide x 2m long Pool noodle or PCV pipe 1 meter long (something thicker than a broom stick please) Netting about 1m x 1.5m for putting over the wool to wet it out
Striped Table Runner Project Materials List for Table Runner: (you can also use this materials list if you would prefer to make pillows, cushion covers, placemats, ipad covers.we are working on about 35% shrinkage rate, so size up your batt accordingly, it will shrink slightly more in one direction than the other These projects must fit on one trestle table 75cm x 1.8metre max! ) Medium Coarse (28-35 micron Corridale/Merino) Needle Felted Batt. Dimensions: 40cm x 1.3 metre, approximately 85gms. Choose a batt colour that is generally slightly darker than the overall colour of wool used for the top design. Suppliers: or For a thinner finish in your table runner, pillow, etc I would suggest using Fibre Fusion s Needle Felted Batts. Either one or two layers depending on how thick or thin you would like it: Let me know if you have some other product you might think will work and we can talk about it. Merino Wool Tops (18-21 micron) Approximately gms. (225gm for the table runner). Bring a grouping of colours as follows. Do the best you can, or call me for advice. Don t panic I will have some wool on hand to sell at the workshop. It will be easier if your wool tops are in long lengths. For the table runner 40cm lengths. o Three Analogous Colours. For instance you could choose three different variations of Orange (red-orange, orange, yellow-orange). You could also choose tints and shades of a colour (light orange, dark orange, bright orange). o Two Analogous Colours. Choose colours that look good with the three other colours. It can be two different Analogous colours or even two Complimentary colours. o Pick two neutral colours (ie colours like: greys, browns, beiges, creams, taupe, black) o Pick two Highlights (can be dark or light in colour) or a totally unexpected colours (ie like hot pink). Felting Equipment for Table Runner: Painters plastic drop sheet. Try to not get the wispy thin ones. Needs to be two pieces that are about 1m x 2m. (builder s film from Bunnings 100um is TOO thick don t bring this). Bubble wrap, non-slip matting or bamboo blind about 1m wide x 2m long Pool noodle or PCV pipe 1 meter long (something thicker than a broom stick please) Netting about 1m x 2m for putting over the wool to wet it out
Nuno Stripe Wrap Project Materials List for Nuno Stripe Wrap: (if you choose this project you may not finish) Silk Mesh or Silk Georgette (Tissue Silk) momme, 2.5 metre or 3.10 metre (for extra long sash like in this photo). I used Blue Jean colourway in Treetops s Silk Mesh. Superfine Merino Tops, 18.5 micron, 7 colours totalling 100gms. However, it will be easier if your wool tops are in at least 1 metre length. Generally 1 metre of wool tops = 25gms. You need 7 colours so you may end up bringing 175gms of wool to have 1 metre of all the colours. Do the best you can, or call me for advice. Don t panic I will have some wool on hand to sell at the workshop. o Two Analogous Colours. For instance you could choose two different variations of Blue (purple-blue and indigo blue or you can choose tints/ shades of blue: light blue and dark blue). I used Treetops Blue Jay and Royal Indigo. o Two Analogous Colours that you think looks good with the other colours you have chosen. In choose two shades of purple to go with my two shades of blue. I used Treetop s Elderberry and Smokey Amethyst. o Pick two neutral colours (ie colours like: greys, browns, beiges, creams, taupe, black). I used Treetop s Burnt Sienna and Urban Grey. o Pick one Highlight colour or a totally unexpected colour (I used a cream colour), not much of this colour is needed. I used Treetop s Stone. Felting Equipment for Nuno Stripe Wrap: Painters plastic drop sheet. Try to not get the wispy thin ones. Needs to be two pieces that are 1m x 3.25m (builder s film from Bunnings 100um is TOO thick don t bring this). Bubble wrap, non-slip matting or bamboo blind about 1m wide x 3m long Pool noodle or PCV pipe 1 meter long (something thicker than a broom stick please) Netting about 1m x 3m for putting over the wool to wet it out - optional
Nuno Pin Stripe Scarf Project Materials List for Nuno Pin Stripe Scarf: Silk Georgette (Tissue) Silk Fabric: 38cm x 2.5m I used Treetop s Colour Harmony in Chinchilla. I think it s more interesting if you use a variegated fabric, but a solid colour is fine as well. Superfine Merino Tops: 60gm in total o One variegated Colourway about 1 metre long (25gms). I used Chinchilla colourway o 2-3 Analogous Colours (25gms). I used a riverstone grey, urban grey, mink o 2-4 Highlight Colours (10gms). I used celery, jacaranda, jewel green, merlot, stone Felting Equipment for Nuno Pin Scarf: Painters plastic drop sheet. Try to not get the wispy thin ones. Needs to be two pieces that are 75cm x 3m (builder s film from Bunnings 100um is TOO thick don t bring this). Bubble wrap, non-slip matting or bamboo blind about 1m wide x 3m long Pool noodle or PCV pipe 75cm - 1 meter long (something thicker than a broom stick please)
Nuno Stripe Scarflet Project Materials List for Nuno Stripe Scarflet: Silk Mesh or Silk Georgette (Tissue) Silk Fabric: The size of this project is up to you, but make sure it will fit on one trestle table (75cm x 1.8m). For this project I used Treetop s Silk Mesh in Outback. I think it s more interesting if you use a variegated fabric, but a solid colour is fine as well. Superfine Merino Tops: Approximately 60gm in total o 3 Analogous Colours. Orange, Red-Orange, Brown-Orange. I this case I used Treetop s Terracotta, Peri Peri and Red Dog. o 2 Analogous Colours: Choose two colours that you think look good with the other colours you have chosen. It could even be their compliment (purples). I chose a green and a bronze called Moss and Cumin, which are more Analogous colours. o 1-2 Neutral Colours. In this case I chose a dark Urban Grey. o 1 Highlight Colour. In this case I chose limey colour called Wasabi. o

SOME INFORMATION ON COLOUR ANALOGOUS COLOURS The analogous colours are those colours which lie on either side of any given colour. Often these are colour schemes found in nature. A site that makes use of analogous colours usually feels harmonious. The secondary colour, as described above, can often be an analogous colour. COMPLEMENTARY COLOURS The complementary colours are the colours which are directly opposite from one another on the colour wheel. Complementary colours are contrasting and stand out against each other. Often it is a good idea to use a complementary colour as the highlight colour, as described above.
SPLIT COMPLEMENTARY COLOURS Split complementary is a colour and the analogous colours to its complement colour. Using split complementary colours can give you a design with a high degree of contrast, yet still not as extreme as a real complementary colour. It also results in greater harmony than the use of the direct complementary. It is common to use a complimentary or split-complimentary colour as a highlight colour. TRIAD COLOURS Triad colours are three hues equidistant on the colour wheel. When you want a design that is colourful and yet balanced, a triad colour scheme might be the way to go. NOTE: Keep in mind that the combinations above only illustrates the hues that are combined. In most colour schemes you will also introduce variations on saturation, tint and shade (like pastels and dark tones). Reference:
