5 Designs in this collection use loose-edge appliqué. This means that the edges of the appliqué fabric are not tacked down, the tack down is slightly inside the edge so that the edge is left loose and able to fray naturally. 1. Print out the necessary pages from the PDF of the appliqué pattern(s). 2. Loosely cut patterns out of paper. (Photo 1) 3. Lightly spray the wrong side of the pattern pieces with temporary spray adhesive and allow it to set for a few minutes. 4. Place the pattern pieces on the right side of the fabric and carefully cut them out just outside the drawn line. (Photo 2) 5. Sew the pattern placement stitch on your hooped fabric. (Photo 3) NOTE: When using this method of appliqué the pattern placement stitch should blend with your background fabric. Photo 03 uses a contrasting color for photography purposes only. 6. With the paper still stuck to the right side of the appliqué fabric, spray the wrong side of the fabric with temporary spray adhesive and allow it to set for a few minutes. 7. Place the fabric over the sewn guide stitch so that it covers the sewn stitching line then remove the paper pattern. (Photo 4) 8. Sew the tack down.(photo 5) 9. Sew the rest of the design and repeat for any remaining pieces. 6 The Dill Appliqué, design , requires two appliqué techniques pre-cut appliqué for the background of the spice jar and a cut-in-place appliqué for the sheer fabric used for the glass. (The sheer fabric should be done as a cut-in-place appliqué because pre-cutting the sheer fabric will cause it to unravel.) To Embroider the Dill Appliqué: 1. Cut the first appliqué using the pattern included in this document. See Photo A. 2. Hoop your background fabric using the stabilizer of your choice. 3. Stitch the guide stitch for the first appliqué. Place the first appliqué stitch over the guide stitch, then stitch the tack down. See Photo B. 4. Stitch the flowers, stems and leaves. See Photo C. 5. Stitch the placement stitch for the glass of the spice jar. 6. Place the glass appliqué sheer fabric right side up over the design, being sure to fully cover the placement stitch. See Photo D. 7. Stitch the tackdown for the glass. 8. Carefully remove the hoop from the machine but do not remove the fabric from the hoop. Cut away the excess fabric, keeping your scissors as close to the tackdown stitch as possible. See Photos E & F. 9. Stitch the remaining color changes to complete the design. See Photo G.
