4 GRINDING The specially designed surface of the CAMEO DISK PLATINIUM guarantees gentle removal and high durability. CAMEO DISK PLATINIUM High durability, gentle, even removal PLATINIUM diamond grinding discs are a true alternative to SiC-Paper for grinding medium-hard to hard materials, such as steel, carbides, ceramics and a range of composite materials. The specially designed surface of these resin bonded diamond grinding discs guarantees substantial, yet careful removal. The CAMEO DISK PLATINIUM diamond grinding discs can be used with all automatic and semi-automatic grinding and polishing machines. Due to the narrow lattice with diamond studded ridges CAMEO DISK PLATINIUM is well suited for manual preparation. CAMEO DISK PLATINIUM is easy to use, with water as the only lubricant required. Edge sharpness is considerably improved in comparison to preparation with SiC-Paper, which is partly due to the abrasive material, but also due to the even, stable carrier material. Even non-embedded specimens and large welding joints can be processed without any problems after a clean separation cut. After two or a maximum of three grinding stages all samples are prepared perfectly for the subsequent polishing process! Apart from the extremely long service life considerable time-savings are the main bonus! Clearly, the CAMEO DISK PLATINIUM offers an excellent cost-benefit ratio! Advantages Excellent edge sharpness even for non-embedded specimens. Simple handling. Reproducible results. Manual and automatic grinding. High durability. Outstanding cost-benefit ratio. 6 GRINDING The CAMEO system The secret of material removal performance The patented CAMEO DISK cell structure P EMBEDDING RESIN Contact surface The homogenous distribution of the diamonds on the ridges of CAMEO DISK PLATINIUM ensures a constant removal rate over the entire life span of the disc. CAMEO DISK Contact Area P EMBEDDING RESIN The special comb structure design of the CAMEO DISK guarantees optimum lubrication of the specimen througout the grinding process. The individual cells containing the lubricant (BioDiamant Suspension for CAMEO DISK GOLD & SILVER, and water in the case of the CAMEO DISK PLATINIUM) help to keep it on the surface, counteracting the centrifugal force of the grinding disc. Lubrication, micro-tanks Continuous circulation of the lubricant between the combs makes efficient use of the lubricant and ensures continuous removal of the dust generated by abrasion. Abrasive Disc Contact Area Rotation DISK Contact Area Suspension Pressure The excellent cutting performance of the CAMEO comb structure ensures a high removal rate whilst applying low grinding force when grinding with CAMEO DISK PLATINIUM or lapping with CAMEO DISK GOLD or SILVER. This preserves the specimen and extends the life span of disc and machine. Cleaning After use, CAMEO DISK GOLD & SILVER are simply cleaned under running water and can be reused with any diamond grain size. Regular honing of the CAMEO DISK PLATINIUM under running water reconditions the disc. V 1 V 2 Small blisters on the surface are perfectly normal and do not imply a manufacturing defect. They do not in any way affect the grinding result. EMBEDDING RESIN Water CAMEO DISK PLATINIUM Scheme of the PLATINIUM workwise. 6
7 LAPPING CAMEO replaces the whole range of SiC-Papers of grain sizes from with one single disc! CAMEO DISK SILVER & GOLD High continuous removal rate CAMEO DISK SILVER and CAMEO DISK GOLD are lapping discs with a high, continuous removal rate. BioDiamant suspensions serve as grinding agents. CAMEO DISK reduces work stages, which formerly required the use of grinding papers with a grain size of The patented comb design of the CAMEO DISK optimises performance of the sprayed-on BioDiamant Liquids. The diamond suspension remains on the disc surface which ensures optimum efficiency. The CAMEO principle guarantees optimum flatness and careful material removal for all types of specimen. Generally, lapping is considerably gentler than grinding and is therefore better suited for delicate, brittle materials. Operating range Wether CAMEO DISK SILVER or CAMEO DISK GOLD need to be selected depends on the specimen. CAMEO DISK SILVER: finish-grinding of medium hard to extremely hard materials (> 200HV), to be used in combination with diamond liquids of 12 6 μm. CAMEO DISK GOLD: finish-grinding of hard and brittle materials, for example ceramics, composite materials, soft materials and non-ferrous materials, to be used in combination with diamond liquids of 12 3 μm. For most materials, BioDiamant Liquid green (9μm) will be the correct choice. For specimens which are particularly difficult to prepare or for composite materials, an optimum polishing result may be achieved with a coarser (blue, 12 μm) and/or a finer (yellow, 6μm) BioDiamant Liquid to ensure optimum removal and lubrication, the diamond suspension needs to be redosed sparingly at regular intervalls. Advantages Easy handling. Excellent removal rate. Grinding stages can be skipped, so you can progress from a 120 whetting stone to CAMEO DISK SILVER with the green suspension! Economical CAMEO replaces the whole range of SiC-Papers of grain sizes from with one single disc! The patented surface profile generates a high, continuous material removal rate. Micro-tanks dispense the grinding agent. Relative to other designs, this system greatly reduces comsumption. Compatible with all grinding and polishing systems! Time efficient preparation and optimum surface flatness of all specimens. Efficiency: various diamond liquids with different grain sizes may be used with one single CAMEO lapping disc. 9 POLISHING TOUCH LAM Polishing cloths help you work efficiently fewer polishing steps short polishing times = optimum result TOUCH LAM Polishing Cloths A simple and systematic product range = efficiently work As often, less is more, and accordingly, too many polishing steps and too long polishing times reduce the smoothness of the specimen. It is, therefore, of paramount importance to carefully coordinate polishing cloths and polishing steps. Composition of the polishing cloths A polishing cloth is a complex combination of different material layers, each with a special purpose. The combination of layers determines the quality of the cloth and is responsible for polishing result and durability. The correct cloth is selected according to the type of specimen and/or the polishing steps Different types are available, with varying active surface materials, types of fabric, flocking or fibre, density or thickness. In combination with the correct polishing agent even the most challenging specimen surfaces can be polished artefact-free in a very short time. Too many polishing steps, especially with soft cloths, considerably reduce the smoothness of the specimen. The active and visible surface (1) of the polishing cloth is the first selection criterion, all other parameters depend on the composition of the layers. The insulating layer (2) prevents the cloth from being soaked, so that the working surface does not separate from the adhesive. This is the foundation for a long life span. The adhesive layer (3) guarantees optimum adhesion of the compound layers. Its consistency determines hardness and polishing characteristics of the cloth. (Soft adhesives are often cheaper to use for softer materials, but may cause edge rounding.) Another important factor is the carrier (4). It is a fundamental component and responsible for stiffness, flatness and elasticity of the polishing cloth. Natural fibres Synthetic fibres Flock Foamed 9

14 DIAMOND PRODUCTS BioDiamant Liquids All in ONE Biodegradable & safe to use BioDiamant Liquids are diamond grinding agents, which comply with our high quality standards in terms of diamond grain quality, grain distribution, but also comply with our high Health and Safety and environmental standards. Diamond suspensions all-in-one by Heraeus Kulzer have always been used without any additional lubricants, delivering continuous, reproducible quality and providing significant savings. This ensures that the same amount of diamonds is sprayed on throughout the process and partial dilution of the suspension is avoided. To guarantee high quality grinding agents, all individual components such as lubricant, consistency and shape of the diamond particle work together seamlessly. Grain distribution within tight tolerances has a major influence on quality. All BioDiamant grinding agents fulfill these criteria. 15 DIAMOND PRODUCTS Why BioDiamant products? The development and distribution of biodegradable products gains more and more importance, last but not least due to environmental policy requirements. It is wrongly assumed that biodegradable products pose no risk to human health. Organic molecules can well be biodegradable and still highly toxic to humans. Superfinish New final polishing agent containing high purity aluminium oxides. Ultra fine particles guarantee an excellent polishing result. Simple use and especially suitable for final polishing of soft materials. Superfinish is available in two grain sizes (Superfinish 1 = 0.25 μm and Superfinish 2 = 0.05 μm) Many formulations for abrasive agents contain additives to enhance efficiency. Some of these additives (for example glycol ethers, to improve miscibility of water and oil-based substances) have good biodegradable properties but can be harmful. Even small amounts are extremely detrimental to human health. The safe formulation of BioDiamant products has successfully replaced glycol ethers. This avoids dangerous health risks caused by inhalation or contact with skin. All ingredients conform with European guidelines 1999/45/EC and 2000/59/EC. We have thus succeeded in making high performance products available to the user which do not pose any risks to the environment or to human health. This is assured by the product named BioDiamant. BioDiamant Liquids are biodegradable and safe to use. Delivery units Designation Quantity Art.-no.
