2 Chairman s letter Join us in San Antonio! This past year has been an extremely busy one for our industry which is a good problem to have. Every once in a while it s nice to take time to reflect, take stock of our progress and look ahead to what s in store for the future. I invite you to participate in the 2016 Annual Meeting & Leadership Conference this March. It s your best opportunity to gain insights on the economy and the industry, discover the challenges that lie ahead and understand how to keep your company ahead of the curve. The Annual Meeting & Leadership Conference offers a great opportunity to find industry information, inspiration, camaraderie, and some fun along the way. From motivational to informational, there is something for everyone at this year s Annual Meeting. On Wednesday and Thursday, Committee, Team and Task Force meetings are scheduled. This is where the real action takes place with AEC volunteers discussing the pressing issues affecting our industry and developing the programs and services that have made this Council indispensable to every member. Why not join us for the committee and team meetings? Thursday evening the event kicks off with an outdoor Welcome Reception that gives everyone a chance to meet and reconnect in a beautiful rejuvenating setting. On Friday, Karen Hughes, corporate counselor and former Counselor to President George W. Bush will discuss the CEOs of Leadership, explaining what it takes to be an exceptional leader. Then Tim Hayes will give us an Aluminum Industry Outlook, sharing his insights on aluminum supply and demand. Saturday s program features an update on the Fair Trade front from AEC s lead attorney on the Aluminum Extrusion Trade Case, Robert DeFrancesco. Our final speaker of the Annual Meeting is David Zach, who describes himself as a futurist. He will give a thought-provoking and funny talk about the strategic trends and traditions with design, technology, economics, business, education, demographics and society. Throughout the program, we ll get an update on the Business Excellence and Industry Promotion activities that have been so incredibly successful. For an added dimension of networking, consider participating in the AEC Golf Tournament or taking an optional tour. And be sure to join us on Saturday evening to cap off the Annual Meeting with the enjoyable Chairman s Reception and Banquet. Wood-beamed ceilings, a stone fireplace, rustic colors and furnishings all pay homage to San Antonio and Texas history as you walk into the sophisticated yet relaxing lobby, which was built to resemble the Big House at the King Ranch, one of the largest and most famous ranches in South Texas. The La Cantera Hil Country Resort underwent an expansive multi-million-dollar renovation that has completely transformed the property into a luxury AAA Four Diamond resort. Reimagined culinary concepts range from casual to gourmet, with each showcasing a distinctive personality that s tied to the resort s remarkable San Antonio Hill Country setting, will provide plenty of dining options. The resort includes redesigned pools (5 in all!), including an adult infinity pool and resort pool complete with waterslide, private cabanas and poolside dining for the entire family to enjoy. Fitness buffs will appreciate the three- and five-mile jogging route winding around the resort s natural surroundings and the Fitness Studio with cardio and weight training equipment. Castle Rock Spa is a full-service day spa next to the Fitness Studio that offers an array of revitalizing spa treatments. The resort also offers two championship 18-hole courses designed to challenge any golfer with the most scenic vistas in Texas Hill Country. The Resort Course will be the setting for the AEC Golf Tournament (see page 6 for details). Room Reservations The Aluminum Extruders Council has reserved a block of rooms at the special rate of $245 per night and $10 resort fee per night (plus tax). Make your reservations directly with the resort soon; the block rate expires February 22, 2016 but space may be sold out before then. After February 22, 2016 group rates cannot be guaranteed and rooms will be filled on a space-available basis. Karen Hughes is a trusted counselor to corporate, nonprofit and political leaders providing strategic communications, corporate positioning and messaging advice. Previously she served as Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs where she led the U.S. State Department s effort to communicate America s values abroad. Karen also served as Counselor to President George W. Bush from 2001 to Timothy Hayes, Lawrence Capital Management Aluminum industry analyst Tim Hayes, Principal at Lawrence Capital Management, provides metals industry and investment research. His previous experience includes 15 years as a sellside metals analyst with Davenport & Co. and BB&T Capital Markets, and as an economic/ industry analyst with Alumax Inc. In his presentation, Mr. Hayes will focus on the outlook for U.S. downstream aluminum markets with an emphasis on the extrusion industry. AEC s lead attorney for the Fair Trade Case provides an update on the latest activity and discusses similar cases with other industries to give members a complete picture of China s activities and their impact on the metals markets. David Zach, Futurist In his work, futurist David Zach is not stuck on the future and is always searching for old ideas that stand the test of time. Some have said that the future requires us to be open to change, but David Zach disagrees it s not that simple. Not all change is progress and not all tradition is outdated. Survival and progress depend on our ability to choose between change and tradition. His presentation is a fascinating (and rather irreverent) look at the trends and traditions affecting design and the roles that architects, designers and planners can have over the next ten years. David s recent role as a Public Director on the board of American Institute of Architects and as a popular speaker at design events gives him particularly good insight on what are the possibilities for the future of the design professions. FRIDAY, MARCH 18 AEC Golf Tournament 12:30 p.m. 6:00 p.m. The AEC Golf Tournament will take place on the La Cantera Hill Country Resort Course, a PGA stop for 15 years designed by noted golf course architect Jay Morrish and PGA Tour professional Tom Weiskopf. Join fellow members and spouses on Friday afternoon for a friendly and competitive game of golf featuring special surprises, networking and fun. Tournament includes a box lunch and refreshments. Spouse Event: Wine Country Tour 9:30 a.m. 5:00 p.m. The Guadalupe River Valley Wine Tour takes guests on a tour of three hill country wineries, as well as a 1-hour sightseeing visit to historic Comfort, Texas, a town known for its antique shopping, restaurants, and local wineries. Bus transportation and lunch are included in this all-day tour. SATURDAY, MARCH 19 San Antonio Missions Bus Tour 12:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. The Spanish missions built along the Rio Grande and founded in the 18th century still stand today and are part of the National Park system. Stops on the tour include The Alamo, the first Spanish mission founded in 1718 famous for the 1836 battle for Texas independence, Mission San José, the best example of a restored mission in the U.S. featuring the famous Rose Window, and Mission Concepción, the oldest unrestored stone church in the U.S. A visit to historic Market Square the largest Mexican market in the U.S. located in a three-block outdoor plaza lined with restaurants, shops and produce stands rounds out the experience. Bus transportation is included. Ultimate Segway Tour of San Antonio 12:30 p.m. 4:30 p.m. This 2 ½ hour Segway Tour of downtown San Antonio and the Riverwalk covers everything from the Theater District to Main Plaza, La Villita and Hemisfair Park. What makes this tour so special is riding along a secluded part of the Riverwalk into the King William District a gorgeous neighborhood dating back to the 1850s. You ll Remember The Alamo in a very unique way. Bus transportation to/from downtown San Antonio is included. Chairman s Reception & Banquet 6:30 p.m. midnight The crowning event of the Annual Meeting, the Chairman s Reception and Banquet provides a great cap to the week s activities on Saturday evening starting at 6:30 p.m. The evening opens with cocktails, hors d oeuvres and conversation followed by an elegant dinner, lively music, dancing and fun. The Volunteer Recognition Ceremony during the evening acknowledges the outstanding contributions from Council volunteers. Dress code: Business/cocktail attire. 6
