2 Symposium 2003 Reputation Equity: Corporate Citizenship & the Bottom Line It is increasingly clear that to establish and sustain trust, corporations must actively engage the public, their customers, their employees, and their partners in the social, financial, and environmental accomplishments and actions of their organization. They must demonstrate and communicate their clear commitment to these three fundamental efforts in every aspect of their corporation. In our Symposium series on Reputation and Sustainability we have examined the environmental, financial and social dimensions that make up a corporation s reputation. Corporate citizenship actions form the essence of the organization s values and beliefs. Our panel of experts investigates the best practices of global corporate citizenship, the financial value added to the bottom line of such actions, and new metrics to measure and manage citizenship and other social intangibles. Understanding the practice of corporate citizenship and its relationship to corporate reputation and identity is the goal of the March 28, 2003 Symposium. If a company s reputation is to have value, it must be based on lived business practices in order to be credible. Corporate citizenship is behavior it cannot be bought. SRI World Group provides information services relating to socially responsible investing to individual investors, institutional investors, and financial professionals. The company also operates CSRwire, a specialized newswire service focused on corporate social responsibility issues. Mr. Falk has more than 16 years experience in the social investment industry. Prior to starting SRI World Group, Mr. Falk worked for 11 years with a Vermontbased money management firm that specialized in socially responsible investing. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Social Investment Forum, a national association of social investment professionals. Mr. Falk has been quoted in many financial publications, including Smart Money, Kiplinger s, Barron s, and Financial Times. Michele Galen is Vice President/Corporate Communication at Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, supporting leadership and employee communications, electronic communications, issue management and culture-building programs for the U.S. and global pharma businesses. She joined Novartis in 2001 from Burson-Marsteller where she was Managing Director, Change Communication. Previously, Ms. Galen worked as a journalist for Business Week magazine responsible for legal affairs and social issues coverage, and as an attorney in New York City. She has a J.D. from New York University School of Law and a M.S. from Columbia University School of Journalism. M. Bradford Randolph is a New York-based attorney specializing in business and tax matters. He is also Of Counsel to the Greenwich-based law firm of McGovern & Associates, which specializes in corporate law and intellectual property, and is a managing director of McGovern Capital, which invests in emerging businesses and sustainability-related technologies. Prior to establishing his own law practice, Mr. Randolph was General Counsel and Secretary of Tractebel Power in New York. William G. Russell is the CEO of SKN Worldwide, a new sustainability services company that works with companies to improve their economic, environmental and social performance, their triple bottom line. He applies his combined environmental, corporate finance, technology and management consulting knowledge to help clients increase productivity while consuming fewer material, energy and financial resources. Mr. Russell is the former President of Ecos Technologies and is intimately familiar with the metrics management and related functionality provided by the ECOSystem. While leading the environmental practice for PricewaterhouseCoopers, he evaluated and provided assurance statements related to environmental management systems, contingent liabilities, environmental reserves and financial, environmental and sustainability reports. He is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager with over 20 years experience. He has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maryland and an M.B.A. in Finance from Rutgers University. Mr. Russell is a member of the advisory board of The University of Michigan s Corporate Environmental Management Program (CEMP) and the technical advisory board of Innovest Strategic Value Advisors.

5 Corporate Communication Institute s Symposium Series CCI S SYMPOSIUM SERIES looks at leading trends critical to the practice of corporate communication. In 2001 the Corporate Communication Institute began its Symposium Series with a discussion focused on sustainability issues to the investment community, the concept of sustainability, and its importance for business. In 2002 CCI explored sustainability s relevance to reputation management. In May we examined the elements of reputation: sustainability, valuation, and research. Our speakers were: Meghan Connolly, Director of CSRwire; Bruce Jeffries-Fox, President, Jeffries-Fox Associates; Peter Horowitz, Senior Managing Director of Global Public Relations for PricewaterhouseCoopers; and James Hutton, Ph.D., Marketing and Communication Professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Reputation is much talked about, but little understood. In December speakers with essential perspectives brought their insight to the complexity of building and maintaining an organization s reputation. Discussing the media perspective was Ron Alsop, News Editor and Senior Writer, Wall Street Journal. Green marketing was covered by Jacquelyn Ottman, President of J. Ottman Consulting, Inc. The current trends in social responsibility marketing were detailed by Ruth Wooden, Senior Counselor at Porter Novelli. Jeffrey Horn, Principal & Co-Leader, Brand Consulting Initiative at TowersPerrin, reviewed findings from research conducted by TowersPerrin and the Council for Communication Management exploring the relationship of employee trust and corporate credibility and the role of corporate communications professionals.
