2 Overview Downstream Industry 101 is a class on the primary downstream activities of the oil business from the transport of crude oil to refineries to the sale of refined products to consumers. Attendees will examine in detail how crude oil and refined products are transported in pipelines and tankers, the processes that convert crude oil into useful products, and the venues that distribute these products to customers. Instructor Allen Mesch, President of PetroStrategies, Inc., will guide participants through the steps in downstream operations to explain the technology, economics, leading indicators, and challenges. The class will combine lecture, class discussion and practical exercises to provide attendees with the foundation necessary to pursue in-depth studies of petroleum industry downstream operations. Allen Mesch consults with a number of oil and gas companies in the areas of strategic planning, economic analysis, feasibility studies, model development, industry research, and forecasting. He specializes in business strategy and analysis for firms seeking growth and improved profitability. He has directed strategic planning and forecasting studies for companies in both the upstream and downstream segments of the oil and gas industry. Mr. Mesch has over forty years of experience in both technical and management positions in engineering, economics, and business planning with such firms as Gulf Oil Corporation, Continental Oil Company, and Sun Exploration and Production Company. From 1980 to 1986, he was Manager of Business Environment Assessment and an Energy Economist for Sun Exploration and Production Company in Dallas. From 1996 to 2000, he was Director of the Maguire Energy Institute. He developed an effective industry outreach program. Mr. Mesch organized two annual conferences on such leading edge topics as Texas electricity deregulation, innovations in energy marketing, and e-commerce. Under his direction, the Institute developed a series of continuing education classes for both industry newcomers and seasoned veterans. The Institute published a quarterly newsletter and developed a highly informative web page. The Institute s innovative Oil and Gas Education Initiative provided an effective vehicle to educate academics, journalists, and government officials on the primary functions of the oil and gas industry. He has held academic positions as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, Southern Methodist University, Texas Woman s University, and Collin College. Mr. Mesch earned a masters degree in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B. S. in chemical engineering from Clarkson University. He has extensive course work in business and management from the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Houston. 4

5 Instructional Methods Class lectures will be presented using Microsoft PowerPoint. The lecture material will be supplemented with Microsoft Excel class exercises. Students are encouraged to bring computers for the exercises. Requirements for Successful Completion of Program Participants must sign in/out each day and be in attendance for the entirety of the course to be eligible for continuing education credit. Credits EUCI has been accredited as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). In obtaining this accreditation, EUCI has demonstrated that it complies with the ANSI/IACET Standard which is recognized internationally as a standard of good practice. As a result of their Authorized Provider status, EUCI is authorized to offer IACET CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standard. EUCI is authorized by IACET to offer 1.5 CEUs for this program.
