4 1:30 2:30 pm I-Corps Government-assisted Innovation The primary goal of the National Science Foundation s Innovation Corps (I-Corps ) is to foster entrepreneurship that will lead to the commercialization of technology that has been previously supported by NSF-funded research. Combining experience and guidance from established entrepreneurs with a targeted curriculum, I-Corps is a public-private partnership program that teaches grantees to identify valuable product opportunities that can emerge from academic research and offers entrepreneurship education to faculty and student participants. This session will provide an overview of the I-Corps program and its accomplishments to date. Dr. Grace Wang, Deputy Assistant Director, Directorate for Engineering, National Science Foundation Dr. Wang was named Deputy Assistant Director for Engineering at the NSF in July Prior to that, Dr. Wang was the Director of the Division of Industrial Innovation and Partnerships at NSF. She previously served as the Program Director for the SBIR/STTR program and then as Cluster Leader for the Nanotechnology, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Cluster in SBIR/STTR program. Before joining NSF, Dr. Wang was a senior development scientist at Hitachi, where she led product development and successful launches. Dr. DasGupta has received multiple awards and honors, has published numerous papers, has presented at various international and domestic conferences and has 5 patents to his credit. 4

5 2:30 3:30 pm New Approaches to Innovation: The Disruptive Health Technology Institute Carnegie Mellon s Disruptive Health Technology Institute (DHTI) is challenging old innovation models by taking a market-first approach to identify and solve critical problems in health care. The Institute uses IT and data mining to identify the problem and hence the market for an innovation and then create a solution, rather than the other way around. Among efforts to improve the cost-effectiveness of health care, insurance claims data can be used to identify opportunities for better medical devices, care delivery methods and patient therapies. DHTI is working in partnership with Highmark Health and the Allegheny Health Network to use claims data and an internal crowd sourcing model to help develop innovative biomedical technologies and healthcare delivery strategies. What lessons can chemical entrepreneurs learn from this new data-driven, market-first model? Lynn M. Brusco, Executive Director, Disruptive Health Technology Institute, Carnegie Mellon University Prior to her appointment at CMU, Ms. Brusco was Vice President and Chief Relationship Officer at the Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse, a biotechnology investment organization, where she worked with 400 startups and helped deploy nearly $20M in direct investment. Ms. Brusco was one of the original directors of the $8.1M Accelerator Fund venture firm. She is a founding Board member of the Pittsburgh chapter of Women in Bio, a nonprofit organization to support emerging women leaders in bioscience. Ms. Brusco facilitated the first Bench-to-Bedside course for the $5M Coulter Program, a campus-wide effort led by Pitt s Swanson School of Engineering that identifies, selects, funds and mentors translational research by clinician-bioengineer teams to address unmet clinical needs through innovative technologies. 3:30 3:45 pm BREAK & NETWORKING NEA Auditorium Atrium 3:45 4:30 pm Challenges & Determination: Lessons from an Entrepreneur Dr. David Harwell, ACS Entrepreneurial Resources Center Director, interviews Dr. Ginette Serrero about the challenges she faced and the lessons she learned from starting her own company based on her discovery of the GP88/PGRN growth factor protein and her pioneering research demonstrating its importance in the tumorigenesis of many cancers. Dr. Ginette Serrero, CEO and Co-Founder of A&G Pharmaceutical Dr. Serrero co-founded A&G Pharmaceutical in Under her leadership, A&G has advanced 7 new therapeutic and diagnostic product candidates into preclinical and clinical development, including 2 breast cancer diagnostics nearing FDA approval. Dr. Serrero is a recognized leader in cancer biology research and development. Prior to founding A&G, Dr. Serrero was a professor at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and a professor in oncology at the University of Maryland s Greenebaum Cancer Center. She has 40 patents to her credit, with more than 100 pending applications related to obesity and cancer molecular targets. Dr. Serrero is on the advisory boards of the Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program and of the Greater Baltimore Technology Council. 5

6 4:30 5:30 pm Regional Innovation Hubs: Building Unique Partnerships The Greater Philadelphia region has successfully established a regional innovation hub. Supporting innovation, entrepreneurship and technology development, the University City Science Center story includes joining the resources of 31 nonprofit shareholders, including many of the distinguished colleges, universities, hospitals and research institutions located throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. How was this accomplished and can this be duplicated elsewhere? Dr. Stephen S. Tang, President & CEO, University City Science Center Dr. Tang has been president and CEO of the University City Science Center, the nation s oldest and largest urban research park, since Dr. Tang is the first president in the Science Center s history to have not only led a company through venture funding and an initial public offering, but to also serve as a senior executive with a large life sciences company as it acquired and integrated smaller startups. Dr. Tang previously led U.S. operations for Olympus America s global life science businesses. Before joining Olympus, he was president and CEO of Millennium Cell Inc., an energy technology firm he led through its initial public offering. Dr. Tang has also had leadership roles with A.T. Kearney and Gemini Consulting, now known as Cap Gemini. 5:30 7:00 pm NETWORKING RECEPTION Across the street at the American Chemical Society Hach Building, Marvel Halls, th Street, NW, Washington, DC Individuals who are registered for Day 2 of the Summit are advised that the program opens Tuesday at 7:00 am with registration and continental breakfast in the NEA Auditorium Atrium.
