1 Japan America Society of Minnesota 通信 Mr. & Mrs. Mondale meet Consul General Okamura & Mrs. Okamura The Tsūshin is a membership publication of the Japan America Society of Minnesota On a beautiful Minnesota fall day, the 14 th Annual Mondale and Scholarship Gala began with a celebratory mood at the Edina Country Club on Saturday, Oct. 29 th. There were guests dressed in beautiful kimono, a bonsai exhibit by Mondale Award Recipient, Takuzo Ishida, an elegant Ikebana floral arrangement by Noriko Ishida and an appetizer featuring choice pork by Compart Family Farms in southwest Minnesota. Ambassador Walter Mondale and Joan Mondale greeted the newly appointed Consul General of Japan at Chicago, Mr. Yoshifumi Okamura, Ms. Kaoriko Okamura on their first visit to Minnesota to attend this gala event. Roger Hale, former business leader and Chairperson of the Ploughshares Fund was the featured keynote speaker. A record turnout of nearly 180 guests filled the halls, and the program began with the ringing of a bell and the grand entrance of the distinguished guests. October 29th November 2011 VOL. 20, No. 11 Keynote Speaker, Roger Hale A very full program awaited the guests, when Peter Bailey, JASM member and talented emcee, welcomed the guests and introduced Consul General Okamura for the opening greeting. Ben van Lierop called on everyone to remember the victims and the suffering of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, and the rebuilding efforts that have been supported by many generous donations and volunteers in Minnesota, and across the U.S. Mr. Mondale spoke of the many contributions of Takuzo Ishida in building of bridges between Japan and Minnesota when presenting the Mondale Award for Japan and Minnesota Partnership. In his presentation, Roger Hale included slides with facts on the current situation regarding nuclear weapons. While speaking gravely on the urgent need to reduce nuclear weapons, Mr. Hale gave hope that strategic dialogue among the nations who possess nuclear weapons is reducing the possibility of nuclear warfare. There was entertainment by renowned soprano, Maria Jette and piano accompaniment by Asako Hirabayashi, and lively fundraising with a live auction, and a direct appeal for donations, to raise funds for the Mondale Scholarship Program, and other activities of JASM. The dinner of Woodland Chicken, and a dessert of Mini Lychee Panna Cotta, came to a close with the rhythmic traditional clapping of hands in the Tejime led by Ishida-san. The event could not have achieved its sparkling success without the dedication and the efforts of many volunteers and JASM board members led by Co-Chairs of the Planning Team, Ron Leonhardt and David Smith. Hands-on Humanitarian Service in Japan Forum Review October 12th As the far reaching effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake continue, a special program on Wed. Oct. 12 in St. Paul acknowledged and honored two Minnesota-linked organizations that have participated in on-theground relief missions in the Tohoku Region: Mirja Hanson joins Ben in photo with Speakers at Luncheon forum. U.S. Navy: Captain Jeff Davis and Captain Brad Gawboy reported on the experience of the Minnesota Naval Reserves Unit and their participation in Operation Tomodachi, the Japan disaster relief effort of the U.S. Navy. Medical Teams International: Mr. Bas Vanderzalm, President of Medical Teams International shared the work of Medical Teams International volunteers that provided on-the-ground assistance in partnership with Christian humanitarian aid organizations in Japan. The Hands on Humanitarian Forum was an interesting, and informative look into the reconstruction of the areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The speakers presented information and their personal stories of the recovery effort. Captains Jeff Davis and Brad Gawboy presented pictures and spoke of the U.S. Navy operations. Medical Teams International s President Baz Vanderzalm explained his organization s effort to relieve the affected areas. He told of his personal experiences in the area and meeting the citizens in Tohoku. Their presentations were warmly received by the guests.

2 Kanna Club JASM presents a new opportunity to network and meet new people: the Kanna Club! This monthly event is a fun and easy way to get to know JASM members. The group will meet at a Japanese restaurant for a night of planned programs and games presented by JASM. There is also a stamp card rewards program for returning participants. Participants will receive a stamp for coming, and can win more stamps through the participation of the evening s festivities. Participants can later redeem the stamps for prizes as well. With the attendance of 20 people at the October Kanna Club, it was another great success. Our gathering at Fuji-ya brought a group of people of all ages together for a night of fun and games. Fujiya s wonderful selection of food also contributed to the night s success as participants enjoyed the appetizers that were presented. People enjoyed meeting new people and participating in the games. With the great food and smiles, Kanna Club is always a warm, and welcoming way to meet and network with new people. The Career Day will be held in the Alexander Hill Ballroom at Macalester College in St. Paul from 1:00-4:15 pm on Saturday, November 12, and will feature speakers, panel discussions, and workshops on career options for students and young professionals with an interest in or experience with Japanese language and culture. Warm days and cool evenings produced colorful red maple leaves on the trees, and a sense of autumn serenity even in crowded Tokyo. In Japan, November is the time when Japanese culture and the arts are celebrated with a national holiday, 文化祭. School children produce art projects, including the poetic form of Haiku, and recognition of culture and literature are recognized nationally by the Imperial family. It is a time to reflect on the appreciation of the arts and the blessings of the nation. This year has been a year of tragedy for Japan with the horrific events of the Great East Japan Eathquake and Tsunami. At the same time, many volunteers in Japan and from overseas, are bringing hope and promise through humanitarian activies for the people of Tohoku. Next week, on Nov. 9 th, Mr. Tatsuhiro Shindo, Chief Executive Director of JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) Chicago will speak at the JASM Corporate Roundtable on the topic, Japan: Road to Recovery Challenges and Opportunities. Everyone is welcome to come to hear Mr. Shindo talk about the renewal and rebuilding that is taking place in Northern Japan. At the Mondale Award and Scholarship Gala, we were reminded of the signing of the Sister Society Agreement between the Akita America Japan Society and the Japan America Society of Minnesota that took place at this time last year. We were pleased to be invited by the Society in Akita to become a Sister Society. Fortunately, our friends in Akita were unharmed by the earthquake and tsunami in March. These relationships are part of the JASM mission. We encourage collaboration with other organizations, such as sister cities associations, to expand grassroots exchanges. We want to encourage new people to become members of JASM and to become involved in our activities as volunteers. We are developing a new website that will carry the JASM story in a new way, and to a new audience. I believe that during these challenging economic times, we can build a vibrant JASM organization that will expand cross-cultural understanding, and serve as a community in which everyone who has a connection to Japan is welcome. 5 Former Intern Tells it All! "Where are we going today?" I asked Mr. Hayashi, a friend who sometimes invited me along to see historical or cultural places throughout Chiba Prefecture. "We're going to have dinner with my friends, the Sakaguchis," he replied. At dinner, Mrs. Sakaguchi hardly said anything, but Mr. Sakaguchi loved to talk and had an interest in everything. During the next five hours, our conversation ranged from anthropology to the origins of the universe. Although we could have kept talking for longer, it finally got too late to continue. During the next year and a half, although I had always intended to spend more time with the Sakaguchis, I only saw them a few more times, and only once without an invitation from Mr. Hayashi. I had fallen into that bad habit of "I can do it anytime," and let the days slide by. One day I heard that Mr. Sakaguchi was in the hospital, and wasn't well enough to receive visitors. The next I heard, he had passed away. His death really spurred me on. It made me realize how fast time was going by and how much I could have done, but hadn't yet. I had wasted a lot of my time as a JET huddling under my kotatsu watching J-dramas instead of doing things. Suddenly, the time I had left until my contract ended seemed incredibly short. I called Mrs. Sakaguchi, who had, before then, always seemed so quiet. We decided to have dinner one night, and I got to know her better. It turned out that she was just as interesting as Mr. Sakaguchi, but while his interests had been on the natural sciences side, hers were in the arts. She hand-painted New Years' cards, created notebooks through traditional Japanese book-binding, and had learned katazome stencil dyeing from National Treasure Serizawa Keisuke. I asked if I could learn some of those things from her, and she said she'd be happy to start teaching me the next time I came over. As I left that evening, we said a typical farewell, with vague "Let's do this again soon"s. But then I remembered my resolve to not let the time slip by. "How about next Wednesday?" I asked. My experiences with the Sakaguchis taught me how important it is to seize the day. As my time on JET wound down, I became determined to do everything I'd always meant to do and I was so busy trying to fit everything in that I rarely spent time at my apartment anymore. I enjoyed Japan more than ever and made a lot of new friends in the process as well. When it was time to leave Japan, I still had a long list of things I wanted to do, but it was a lot shorter than a few months before. Now that I'm back in America with seemingly limitless time ahead of me, it's tempting to fall into that old bad habit, but luckily, with all the great JASM events, it's easy to seize the day and still have a connection to Japan, even here in Minnesota. -written by Erica Johnson, former JASM intern Thank You!
