Introduction What Sasaki Sadako, the young girl of the paper cranes whose life was cut short at 12, was trying to share with the world: The simple hope for a world where everyone can live in peace.

2 Introduction What Sasaki Sadako, the young girl of the paper cranes whose life was cut short at 12, was trying to share with the world: The simple hope for a world where everyone can live in peace. That was the INORI (prayer) for peace. Paper cranes, fly to the world! The NPO SADAKO LEGACY was officially registered with the Japanese Cabinet Office on 9 March, On 4 September, 2010, the organisation was fully launched and began its activities. Japan, as the only country to have experienced the atomic bombings of its cities, should act as a messenger for peace and take leadership internationally. This organisation was established by the family of Sasaki Sadako, the 12-year old Hibakusha (atomic bomb victim) who was the model of the Children's Monument in the Hiroshima Peace Park, in order to conduct many activities to tell many people of Sadako's life, research small peace, and build reconciliation of the heart. Considering what can be done for children around the world who are suffering physically and emotionally, and to make those actions concrete, many activities such as filmmaking, animations, drama, theatre, plays, picture-story shows, readings, peace concerts and schools and other facilities, and many other events are being held. Furthermore, paper cranes are gifted as a symbol of peace to related places in Japan and around the world, in the hope to advocate for peaceful and healthy hearts so that people can live in peace, with their human rights protected, in a peaceful and cultural society 2

Sasaki Sadako experienced the bombing of Hiroshima when she was 2 years old at her home in Misasacho.

Believing that if you fold a thousand paper cranes, your wish will come true, Sadako began to fold cranes in May of the same year from the wrappings of her medicine or gifts from visitors.

4 About SADAKO SASAKI 佐々木禎子 Sasaki Sadako 7 January October 1955 A Hibakusha (atomic bomb victim) who was the model for the Children s Monument in the Hiroshima Peace Park, Sasaki Sadako s portrait was registered at the Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims on 25 July, Sasaki Sadako experienced the bombing of Hiroshima when she was 2 years old at her home in Misasacho. When she was in Grade 6 she was diagnosed with subacute lymphoid leukemia and hospitalised at the Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital. Believing that if you fold a thousand paper cranes, your wish will come true, Sadako began to fold cranes in May of the same year from the wrappings of her medicine or gifts from visitors. However, sadly her wish did not come true and she passed away from the atomic bomb disease at the young age of 12. The paper cranes have since become a symbol of peace. Sadako passed away before she had managed to make 1000 cranes, and the remaining number were made by her classmates and buried together with her. In hope of sharing that sadness and hope for peace with the world, Sadako's classmates called for the creation of the Children's Monument, which was completed on 5 May 1958 (Children's Day) in the Hiroshima Peace Park. There is also a bronze statue in the Seattle Peace Park. 4

Advocacy activities begin towards 2012, deepening international exchange with the goal of peaceful and rich lives for all. 8

9 SASAKI YUJI PROFILE 佐々木祐滋 (Sasaki Yuji ) KUMIKO performed INORI at the NHK Kohaku Singing Contest on 31 December 2010 (AVEX) Eric Martin (MR BIG)'s huge hit cover series best album, MR. VOCALIST BEST released in April 2011! Singer songwriter from Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture. Born on 6 June, As the nephew of Sasaki Sadako, created the rock band GOD BREATH in 2000, beginning his activities of singing about his aunt Sadako and the importance of life. Creating songs with the motif of Sasaki Sadako, Yuji has received wide praise internationally, and participants in peace events at schools and other places throughout Japan. Since 2009 he has performed at more than 300 schools. Since 2009 he has been performing solo, and his song INORI, telling Sadako's story, saw its major debut through Sony Music Records on 21 July, The same song was performed by singer KUMIKO at the 2010 NHK Kohaku Singing Contest, and has since become a hit. On 23 March 2011, popular US rock singer Eric Martin covered an English version of INORI, leading to it being shared more and more internationally. 9
