1 >>Chair Greg Musil: Good afternoon. We ll call to order the special meeting of the Johnson County Community College Board of Trustees with a single item on the agenda. It is not on the agenda, but I think we should start with the Pledge of Allegiance anyway. Join me. >>I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. >>Chair Greg Musil: My biggest fear as Chair is that I will forget the words to the Pledge of Allegiance. The agenda before us this afternoon is to select candidates for interview for the Board position vacated by the resignation of Trustee Bob Drummond. Dr. Drummond has submitted his resignation, which was accepted at our March meeting, effective June 30th, So the successor trustee will join the Board effective July 1, which is the start of the next fiscal year. Applications were received from eight qualified individuals and our task in selecting one individual from this group will be difficult. We are grateful for the interest that so many have expressed in the position as we certainly have a qualified pool to consider. I will add that in the two times I ve done this on the Board, I think it s the most difficult thing you do as a Board member trying to select from a pool of very qualified applicants because unlike a policy decision where you re just going one way or the other, here you actually feel like you re rejecting qualified individuals who have applied and shown an interest in fulfilling the mission of the college. Through the application process, each candidate responded to a series of questions. Each of the trustees up here received the applications in advance of the meeting for review and evaluation. The applications asked those specific questions and also requested a copy of the candidate s resume. This afternoon we will select candidates for interview based upon a motion and vote on each separate candidate. If a candidate is moved on to the interview process, those will take place on May 5th at a special board meeting in this room, which I believe is set at 4:00. 4:00 on May 5th. As Chair, I will move the nomination of each individual applicant in alphabetical order. If the motion does not receive a second, that applicant will not be considered for an interview. If the motion is seconded, a roll call vote will be taken with each trustee asked to vote yes or no. If the motion carries with the applicant receiving a majority number of votes, which in this case would be four, that applicant will be granted an interview on May 5th. I think we ll go through this and see if -- we anticipate interviews at 20 minutes each. If a majority of the board wants to interview all eight, we could do that. If we have less than that or fewer than that, then we will interview the number that receive a majority vote. Yes, Trustee Cook. >>Trustee Jerry Cook: Thank you, Mr. Chair. I think for the benefit of the audience, both televised and that are here present, we ve reviewed the resumes of all these candidates and we have taken a look

2 at about eight or nine different areas of what we consider to be boardsmanship. So when we make decisions today, it s not like it s been a quick kind of response to the motion, but we have analyzed all the resumes very thoroughly and, like I say, assessed them over about nine different areas. >>Chair Greg Musil: After I call for a after I move a candidate, if there s no second, we ll move on to the next one. If there is a second, we will go to a roll call vote and I will call the trustees names in alphabetical order. They will be notified, as will the three individuals who will not be called back for interviews. Again, I think we had a very strong pool and we have five interviews. That means we will spend at least an hour and 40 minutes on May 5th in interviews and then proceed to vote. We will narrow them down to three, well, I m trying to remember the process exactly. We will narrow them down initially to three and then to two and then we need to get one person. It is possible that we could end up 3-3, in which case we will continue to vote and discuss in Open Session since it s an elected position until we choose a successor to Dr. Drummond.
