4 2016 Volunteer of the Year Jim Snyder was recognized as the volunteer of the year. He has given over 13 years of committed volunteer service to RCCR and has also been a member of the Board during that time. You could always depend on Jim to be there helping with any RCCR fundraiser or other event. Housing Development Housing Counseling along with new Home Development resulted in 34 more families becoming first time home owners. Three of those homes were built by RCCR. Two more homes were completed in 2016 and will close in Wall of Fame Inductee John Brown was inducted onto our Wall of Fame at the Annual Meeting in October. The Wall of Fame award was created at the Samaritan Inn 20th Anniversary. Each year graduates are selected for this honor. In order to be included, recipients must have graduated at least 5 years earlier, be active in the community, remain in recovery and maintain contact with Samaritan Inn. John is the 14th inductee to the Wall of Fame. Previous inductees include: William Childs, Larry Lamar, George Paugh, Hayward Skoglund, Michael Gillium, Greg Menear, Tom Edwards, Barry Copley, Frank Pensula, Scott Proctor, Michael Cooney, Emanuel Robinson III, and James Butterworth.
5 Edwin s Success Story Edwin was a 57 year-old man when he was accepted as a resident at Samaritan Inn. He was being thrown out of his family home and sent to an emergency shelter by his nephew and his nephew s wife who also occupied the house. Edwin had been abusing alcohol and drugs since his adolescent years. He had been treated six times in veteran s facilities for his substance abuse problems through the years. In all cases, he started using again. He had graduated from a local high school, served two tours in combat in Vietnam and worked as an iron worker in Houston, Texas. His life spiraled downward when he returned to Dunbar and first got a job as a dishwasher in a family restaurant, followed by a job as a night clerk in a convenience store. He had been fired from all his jobs because of his alcohol and drug use. He married for the first time at age 49 and was widowed at age 55. His wife died from complications brought on by her substance abuse. Over the years, he had accumulated a total of 99 public intoxication charges, two charges for driving while drunk, one charge for a major driving violation and one charge and arrest for public streaking. His driving privileges were revoked in As a resident of Samaritan Inn, all his goals were completed during his stay. The program and staff helped him get assistance with his issues, which included dental help, substance abuse counseling, a job coach and financial literacy training. When he graduated from Samaritan Inn, Edwin had a new career at CAMC with all the benefits, he was able to have his own apartment on Charleston s East End, and enjoyed a healthy relationship with family. He even found a supportive girlfriend. He is a success story.
