1 S Section B ports Wednesday, August 22, 2012 The McLeod County Chronicle GSL fall teams getting ready By Lee Ostrom Sports Editor ractices for seven fall-season sports teams at Glencoe-Silver Lake High School got under way Monday, Aug. 13. GSL is a member of the Wright County Conference, which has added two members Holy Family Catholic (in Victoria) and New London-Spicer since the conclusion of the 2011 fall sports season. P Colin Kerslake (boys soccer) is the lone new GSL fall-season head coach. Kerslake replaces Jeff Jenson, who resigned the post after Panther openers were scheduled to begin Tuesday morning, Aug. 21, with tennis matches against Jordan and Sibley East. There is more tennis Thursday morning, as well as the girls soccer team s 1 p.m. opener with Willmar at Stevens Seminary Stadium. The final GSL team to open is the football squad, which plays host to Holy Family Catholic on Friday, Aug p.m. opening kickoff. Previews for five GSL fall teams boys cross country, girls cross country, boys soccer, girls soccerr and girls tennis appear on this week s sports pages. The Chronicle plans to preview GSL s football and volleyball teams next week. Lee Ostrom BOYS CROSS COUNTRY 2011 in Review GSL s boys placed fourth in the Wright County Conference; then took third in Section 4 (Class A). Last year s team won invitationals at Waconia, Dassel-Cokato and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted. Jake Burr, a senior in 2011, was the team s lone qualifier for the state meet. Burr earned a spot on the Class A all-state team by placing 18th at the big run in Northfield. Graduation Hit Losing Burr (3rd WCC, 3rd Section 4) is a big loss. Three other seniors ran at sections; none cracking the top 40, however. Who Returns Academic all-stater Jalen Metcalf, now a senior, placed 10th to earn an AllWCC medal last fall. Brandon Richter, then a fantastic freshman, received honorable mention. Metcalf (14th), current junior James Tichy (31st) and Richter (32nd) posted GSL s second, third and fourth scores at last year s section meet. The Panthers have back five of their top six scores Boys CC Turn to page 3B Only 48 boys (gr ) are out for GSL football Chronicle photo by Lee Ostrom Seated GSL cross-country runners are senior Jalen Metcalf, who earned an All-WCC medal in 2011, and sophomore Brandon Richter, who received honorable mention. Standing, from left, are returning letterwinners Garrett Ober, Jac Chelman, Kyle Polzin, Tyler Zajicek, Ryan Sprengeler, and first-year seniors Tanner Konnen and Alex Lamp. Missing is returning letterwinner James Tichy. GIRLS SOCCER Chronicle photo by Lee Ostrom Glencoe-Silver Lake s captains for the 2012 girls soccer season, from left, are: Mercy Rakow, Kaitlyn Cohrs, Taylor Breidenbach, and Yodee Rivera in Review After backto-back winless seasons in 2009 and 2010, GSL s girls won two matches last fall. Goals against were cut nearly in half (from 110 in 2010 to 57). Playing without a bench, 11 Panthers played secondseeded New Ulm to a scoreless tie for the first 60 minutes of the teams Section 2 (Class A) openinground clash a match New Ulm would eventually win, 4-0. That left GSL with a 2-14 season record. Graduation Hit Brianna Tesch. That s it. Who Returns 10 starters, including All-Wright County Conference defense midfielder Mercy Rakow and honorable-mention recipients Kaitlyn Cohrs, a forward; 11th-grader Yodee Rivera, a striker; and goalie Brianna Elsing. Other starters back: seniors Taylor Breidenbach, Alex Brusven and Courtney Neubarth; sophomores Yocelin Lopez and Keisha Prafke, and eighth-grader Kenzie Boozikee. Numbers Much improved. Since the season-ending loss to New Ulm, 13 girls have been added to head coach Zach Otto-Fisher s roster. Currently, GSL has 6 seniors, 3 juniors, 5 sophomores, 6 ninth-graders, 10 eighth-graders, and 6 seventh-graders. With 36 girls, Otto-Fisher hopes to field three teams one junior high team for Debbie Moosbrugger, one JV for Gary Carter and a varsity for himself. Who to Beat in WCC Holy Family Catholic, Waconia and Orono should field teams of a high quality. GSL Outlook Otto-Fisher said this team put in a lot of work over the summer including club matches and captains practices. He Glencoe-Silver Lake football coaches welcomed 48 boys, grades 10-12, to the start of practices Monday morning, Aug. 13. That number is down six boys from the opening of practices a year ago. And it is way down from the 72 boys (15 seniors, 27 juniors, 30 sophomores) who reported to practice in August Those 2007 Panthers, you may recall, trounced DeLaSalle, 56-20, in Prep Bowl XXVI to cap off a 14-0 season. Numbers aside, head coach Scott Tschimperle said the 2012 Panthers had a great first week, undoubtedly assisted by weather that seemed more suited for late than mid-august. GSL returns most of its goodhands people. Graduation, however, made a heavy hit up front, particularly with the defensive line. Reed Dunbar and Brandon Ebert are a pair of two-year starters at the offensive ends. Tschimperle & Co. are looking for a third quality player at those spots, freeing Dunbar to jump platoons and become a defensive end. In addition, Tschimperle said four boys juniors Tyler Donnay, Zach Jones and Nolan Lepel, plus 12th-grader Eric Thalmann are competing for the two guard spots on the offensive line. Donnay also is a candidate for a defensive tackle post if he s not needed by the offense. Fans are invited to get their first good look at the 2012 Panthers at GSL s anual four-team scrimmage, Saturday morning, Aug. 25. starting at 9:30 a.m. *** Plays is under way in St. Cloud at the Class C state amateur baseball tournament, where four Crow River Valley League teams qualified and only Young America failed to survive the first round. Nick Litfin had three hits and scored three runs and Chris Bullis tossed a six-hitter in Waconia s 6-1 win over Stark on Aug. 17. The next day, Scott Theisen was 5-for-5 with two RBIs in Winsted s 8-5 victory over Jackson. Region 7 champion Green Isle drew a firstround bye. All-WCC seniors Mary Arnold and Jackie Stifter played as a doubles pair in their second straight state meet; and as before, won their first match and dropped their second. Graduation Hit Huge. Over a five-year span, the nine graduates accounted for 408 individual match wins. But as good as they were on the court, they were even better in the classroom. Five were academic all-staters. As a group, the 2011 team showed a GPA above Who Returns Junior Kelly Arnold and seniors Michaela Boesche and Kelly Beneke are long in varsity experience.
