The collection consists mainly of Fox's correspondence, research notes and other material concerning his research on carotenoids. The papers also include biographical material and a typescript of Fox's autobiography Again the Scene. The papers include files on the controversy surrounding the appointment of Roger Revelle as director of Scripps in 1948 and 1950, files on the University of California Loyalty Oath Controversy of 1950, and material received by Fox from the Scripps Office of the Director from which document the creation of the University of California, San Diego. There are several folders of material documenting Fox's long association with the San Diego Zoological Society.
