4 Historical or Biographical Note John B. Youmans ( ) was a physician, teacher, researcher, and author. He received his M.S. from the University of Wisconsin in 1916 and his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in He then had an Internship at the Milwaukee Children's Hospital in In 1921 Dr. Youmans was the Medical House Officer at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He then was Assistant in Medicine at Johns Hopkins in At the University of Michigan Dr. Youmans went from Instructor to Assistant Professor of Medicine during the time period from He then came to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine; he was first an Assistant Professor and later a Professor of Medicine, from During World War II he was a Colonel and Head of the Armed Forces Nutrition Services of the Office of the Surgeon General from He then served as Dean and Professor of Medicine at the University of the Illinois College of Medicine from He returned to Vanderbilt as Dean, Professor of Medicine, and Director of Medical Affairs from Then he served as the Technical Director of Research for the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command from For more information and pictures please see the VUMC Online Images and Biography of Dr. Youmans.
