Collection Description Biographical Note Goodrich Cook White ( ) graduated in 1908 from Emory College in Oxford, Ga, and was a member in the senior honor society, D.V.S. After receiving a master s degree in Emory Libraries provides copies of its finding aids for use only in research and private study. 2 psychology from Columbia University in 1911, he thaught English and psychology at Kentucky Wesleyan College ( ) and psychology and education at Wesleyan College ( ). In 1914 he returned to Emory College as a faculty member, leaving temporarily for army service in 1918 and further graduate work leading to a Ph.D. awarded by the University of Chicago in White was professor of mental and moral science, Emory College, ; associate professor of psychology, and professor of psychology, , Emory University. He began his administrative work as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, , and Dean of the Graduate School, White served as Vice President of the University from 1938 to 1942, when he became President. He retired as President August, 31, 1957 and the next day assumed the position of Chancellor, which he held until his death on April 12, Scope and Content Note The Goodrich C. White papers include personal correspondence related to his various postitions at Emory University as college dean, graduate school dean, president, and chancellor; general correspondence that combines folders he maintained titled "general" and "miscellaneous"; speeches given at Emory and elsewhere; writings; financial correspondence and records that include materials relating to both his personal and professional lives; biographical materials from his undergradute and graduate studies, his military services, as well materials relating to his family; and memorabilia. 4 Series 1 Personal correspondence, Boxes 1-20 Scope and Content Note The bulk of the personal correspondence series ( ), which is arranged chronologically, contains incoming and outgoing correspondence in regard to a wide variety of activities. These activities included his official Emory University responsibilities (as college dean, graduate school dean, president and, finally, chancellor); speaking engagements; leadership positions in the United Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, and in two local men s literary groups, The Ten and The Symposium. In addition, the personal correspondence deals with White s service as a trustee of Clark College and Wesleyan College and as a director of Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company. Series 1 also includes a number of subject folders maintained by Dr. White. These files include statements of congratulations he received when he became Dean of Emory College in 1923 and President of Emory University in 1942; and letters of sympathy regarding his elder son Lieutenant Goodrich Cook White, Jr., reported missing in action in 1944 and dead in Other topics include the President s Commission on Higher Education ( ), congratulations on assuming the Presidency of the United Chapters of Phi Beta Kappa (1952), and his retirement and the selection of a successor as President of Emory University ( ). Correspondence ( ) and speeches ( , undated) related to the Ten Club comprise the last group of subject folders. 14 Series 3 Speeches, Boxes Scope and Content Note Series 3 is perhaps the single largest body of papers conveying Dr. White s thoughts on higher education and related matters. Notations about the audience and the occasion on the typed drafts of his speeches indicate that Dr. White often spoke on the Emory and Oxford campuses as well as campuses throughout the nation. 15 Series 4 Writings, Box 28 Scope and Content Note Series 4 includes copies of published speeches, book reviews, children s religious stories, and a scholarly article based on Dr. White s doctoral dissertation in experimental psychology. 16 Series 5 Financial correspondence and records, Box 29 Scope and Content Note Series 5 contains personal financial papers on insurance, major expenditures, donations, and Chancellor s Office expenditures. The correspondence and receipts dealing with donations show that Dr. White supported numerous Emory solicitations, special funds honoring various individuals, and community service organization (such as the League of Women Voters and Y. M. C. A.). In addition, there are topical files regarding the purchase, maintenance, and sale of three homes owned by Goodrich and Helen White. 17 Series 6 Biographical information and memorabilia, Box Scope and Content Note Series 6 contains biographical information and memorabilia from 1905 to Files of academic correspondence and records deal with White s studies at Emory College ( ), Columbia University ( ), and University of Chicago ( ). Included are the references White gathered in 1910 and 1911 for application to graduate school and copies of his master s thesis from Columbia University (1911) and his doctoral dissertation from the University of Chicago (1927). Another group of biographical folders deal with White s service as a psychologist in the U. S. Army in This group contains his personal army records and correspondence ( ), notes taken in training (1918), reports prepared for the army (1918), copies of The Caduceus published at Camp Gordon, Georgia ( ), and part of a World War I personnel manual. The reports include psychological studies of black soldiers. Other materials in the biographical series are an undated typescript of reminiscences, biographical fact sheets, certificates and awards, clippings, programs of special events (mostly academic) in which White participated, and photographs. In addition, there are materials relating to his wife Helen Chappell White, his son Chappell White, his mother Florrie Cook, and his brother-in-law Frank Chappell. One box of memorabilia contains a notebook White kept on various Phi Beta Kappa and Emory University matters, appointment books ( ), bookplate, and a souvenir paper weight and medal.
