1 Faculty and Staff Travel and Study Abroad Grant Travel to Ecuador to Explore Potential Research and Field School Opportunities Travel Report Eric Demers, Biology Department, Faculty of Science and Technology On 7-15 January 2013, I travelled to the Wildsumaco Biological Station (WBS) in Ecuador, South America to explore potential research and field school opportunities. The WBS is located on the foothills of the eastern Andean slope (0 o S; 77 o W), approximately 114 km southeast of the capital Quito and 15 km south of the Sumaco volcano (Figure 1). Travel from Quito to the WBS takes approximately 4 hours along mostly paved roads through the beautiful Papallacta Pass (el. 4,000 m) and the small villages of Baeza, Cosanga, Narupa and Sumaco. At an elevation of 1,500 m, the WBS enjoys a comfortable subtropical climate with a daily temperature range of o C. The WBS opened in March 2012 as a partnership between the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Francis Marion University and the Wildsumaco Wildlife Sanctuary. At present, the station consists of two dormitory-style housing units and shared bathrooms, and a combined kitchen, dining and lecture-laboratory building (Figure 2). The station can accommodate up to 16 students and 2 instructors. Accommodations are rustic and cost-effective, yet provide students and scientists with features important for conducting research, such as electricity and areas for storing equipment. Food services (primarily Ecuadorian-style meals) and station maintenance is provided by Quechua-speaking Ecuadorian natives from the nearby village of Pacto Sumaco. Future expansion plans include the addition of satellite internet capabilities and a separate laboratory facility. Due to the location of the WBS on the Equator, its elevation on the Andean foothills and the close proximity of the Amazon lowlands, the Sumaco area holds one of the richest biodiversity in the world. The surrounding lush subtropical rainforest is home to numerous animals (including 500 bird species) and plants. The network of trails around the station provides access to primary, secondary and riparian forest, and pasture land. Activities while at Wildsumaco Biological Station While at the Wildsumaco Biological Station, I had the opportunity to interact with a US ornithological research team (Dr. Len Reitsma and Samuel Merker, Plymouth State University, New Hampshire; Dr. Keith Larson, Lund University, Sweden; Dr. Joseph Smith, Nature Conservancy, New Jersey). I had met Dr. Reitsma during a previous visit to Ecuador in March 2010 and at an ornithological conference in August The research team was conducting research on the migration ecology of the Swainson s Thrush (Catharus ustulatus), a relative of the American Robin that migrates each year from its wintering grounds in Central and South America to breed in the coniferous forests of North America. I was able to Eric Demers Page 1 of 6 Travel Grant Report
2 assist the research team in capturing birds using mist nets, obtaining biometrics and biological samples, and deploying position-tracking devices on some of the birds to monitor their migration (Figure 3). This opportunity was especially valuable since it parallels the ornithological research and monitoring capacity which I am developing during my current assisted leave. In addition, Dr. Reitsma has extensive experience in conducting research field schools in Porto Rico for 15 years and he has taken a group of students to the WBS during January We had numerous discussions about the benefits, challenges and logistics of conducting a research field school in Ecuador. This information combined with my observations while at the WBS will be extremely valuable in planning a potential future VIU biological research field school in Ecuador. Potential Biological Research Field School at Wildsumaco Biological Station The Wildsumaco Biological Station would definitely lend itself well to conduct a biological research field school. Its setting in one of the most ecologically diverse ecosystem on Earth, combined with the fact that very little scientific study has ever been done there, enhances its potential as a location to conduct a research field school. The multitude of insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and plants would provide students with a wide range of options to conduct unique ecological research projects. Their final research reports would be made available to local conservation authorities (e.g., Wildsumaco Wildlife Sanctuary, Aves & Conservación) and would contribute to expanding the biological knowledge base for the WBS area. These contributions, in collaboration with field schools from other institutions, are anticipated to result in potential scientific publications. The logistics and resources required to establish a biology research field school at the WBS would be relatively simple. The management of the WBS provides excellent in-country travel planning services, which would address all travel, lodging and accommodations needs while in Ecuador. These services are important to facilitate conducting a field school in a foreign country where English is not the primary language and local customs may not be familiar. Therefore, VIU personnel and instructors can focus mainly on providing services and instruction to students. In addition, through many years of running the highly successful Tropical Biology Field School in Belize, Biology faculty have developed expertise which could be expanded to the development of an exciting field school in Ecuador. The cost per student of conducting such a field school is anticipated to be reasonable and within the range of other similar VIU field schools. Table 1 provides an approximate budget for a VIU biological research field school in Ecuador. Students would receive 3 credits in the existing BIOL 396 course (Tropical Biology Directed Studies) for this unique experiential learning opportunity. The Travel Abroad Grant helped to significantly expand the research and preparation needed to design a future tropical biology research field school in Ecuador. Such a field school would represent a true travel-study experience that could expand the environmental and cultural literacy of our students. It would support internationalization priorities for VIU, and would provide unique scholarly opportunities for the VIU faculties involved. Eric Demers Page 2 of 6 Travel Grant Report
