1 Accession No.: PROCESSING RECORD SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY ARCHIVES Hinton, Sam Duffie ( ) Sam Duffie Hinton Drawings, Physical Description: 66 items in 2 folders Description: The accession consists of 66 pencil and pen and ink drawings on paper by Samuel Duffie Hinton dated between 1942 and 1970 when Hinton worked at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The drawings are largely sketches for posters and cartoons and doodles made during meetings. Hinton generally presented the finished drawings and cartoons to friends. Most of the drawings are caricatures of individuals, including sketches of staff at SIO, and friends including folk musicians. The drawings include caricatures of oceanographers including Wesley Coe, Jacques Cousteau, Carl Eckart, Richard H. Fleming, Denis Fox, Joel Hedgpeth, Carl Hubbs, John Isaacs, Martin Johnson, George F. McEwen, Norris Rakestraw, Roger Revelle, Harald Sverdrup, and Claude ZoBell. There is a caricature of Scripps radio operator Frank Berberich, and a few sketches of University of California administrators including Regent Philip Boyd and UCSD Business Manager Joseph Hutchison. Caricatures of musicians include Woody Guthrie, Burl Ives, Mike Seeger, and Patrick N. Shuldham- Shaw. Finished drawings of several of the studies in this collection can be found in the Martin Johnson Papers and the Carl Leavitt Hubbs Papers.
