DISCOVERY LECTURE SERIES 2015 The Discovery Lecture Series is designed to introduce scientific and mathematical research to our students. Guest lectures have agreed to share their knowledge and expertise with the COSMOS community.
July 7 Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla Pradeep K. Khosla became UC San Diego s eighth Chancellor on August 1, At UC San Diego, Khosla initiated and led a comprehensive, all-inclusive strategic planning process to unify the campus and define UC San Diego's future. An internationally renowned electrical and computer engineer, Khosla previously served as Dean of the College of Engineering and Philip and Marsha Dowd University Professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He spent the majority of his career at Carnegie Mellon, rising through the ranks from his first position as Assistant Professor in 1986 to his appointment as Dean in Khosla is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Society for Engineering Education. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Association for Advancement of Science, the American Association of Artificial Intelligence and the Indian Academy of Engineering. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Indian Academy of Science. Khosla is also the recipient of numerous awards for his leadership, teaching, and research, including the 2012 Light of India Award, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the George Westinghouse Award for contributions to improve engineering teaching. In 2012, he was named as one of the 50 most influential Indian-Americans by SiliconIndia.
July 7 Professor Thomas Bewley Thomas Bewley is a professor in the Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering Departmen. got his BS and MS from Caltech, and my PhD from Stanford, all in Mechanical Engineering. Between Caltech and Stanford, he got a diploma from a 1-year course at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics in Belgium, and served as an officer in the US Air Force. Thomas Bewley joined the Dynamic Systems and Control Program of MAE in 1998, after completing his Ph.D. at Stanford University. His several research interests lie at the intersections of control and optimization theory, fluid mechanics, Navier-Stokes mathematics, high-performance computing, and robotics. His research is centered around the Flow Control & Coordinated Robotics Labs at UC San Diego. The pace of activity in the labs these days is ferocious; He has posted descriptions of some of the ongoing research activities, as well as several of the published references, at his website: fccr.ucsd.edu/bewley.html
July 14 Assoc. Professor Elsa Cleland Elsa Cleland is currently an Assistant Professor in the Division of Biological Sciences at UC San Diego, with a research focus on ecosystem responses to environmental change. She received her PhD from Stanford University in 2005 and was a Postdoctoral Fellow and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at UC Santa Barbara before joining the faculty at UCSD. Her research has demonstrated that the timing of plant growth is a key indicator of species responses to global change, and shows that ecosystems often respond in surprising, non-linear ways when exposed to multiple, simultaneous environmental changes. Research in the Cleland lab focuses on the intersection between plant community and ecosystem ecology, utilizing a combination of experimental, observational and data-synthesis techniques. We have a particular focus on global changes such as climate change, altered precipitation, nitrogen deposition, and invasive species. Current research projects include: 1) Quantifying ecophysiological responses of California native shrubs to shifting precipitation and nitrogen availability in the greenhouse, in comparison to measurements made across natural gradients. 2) Identifying environmental manipulations that maximize the success of ecological restoration efforts in coastal sage scrub ecosystems, and 3) Evaluating the role of phenology (or timing) in structuring native and invasive plant communities. Research into the impacts of global change offers the opportunity to ask fundamental questions about how resources and climate influence the structure and functioning of natural ecosystems, while contributing to a greater understanding of these pressing environmental problems.
July 21 Dr. Rommie Amaro Dr. Rommie Amaro is a native of the south side of Chicago and earned her bachelor's degree in chemical engineering with high distinction from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in After graduating, she joined Kraft Foods, Inc. as an Associate Research Engineer in Glenview, Illinois, working mainly on Philadelphia Cream Cheese productivity and commercialization projects. Dr. Amaro earned her Ph.D. in chemistry in the lab of Professor Zan Luthey-Schulten, where she worked mainly on computational methods to reconstruct free energy profiles from nonequilibrium pulling experiments of ammonia conduction through a beta-barrel protein involved in histidine biosynthesis and studying mechanisms of allosteric regulation in proteins. In 2009, Dr. Amaro started her independent research career in the Deparments of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Computer Science, and Chemistry at the University of California, Irvine. In 2010 she was selected as an NIH New Innovator for her work developing cutting-edge computational methods to help discover new drugs. The following year, she received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. In 2012, Dr. Amaro opened her lab at UCSD in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Research in the Amaro Lab is broadly concerned with the development and application of state-of-theart computational methods to address outstanding questions in drug discovery and molecular-level biophysics. Her lab focuses mainly on targeting neglected diseases, Chlamydia, influenza, and cancer, and works closely with experimental collaborators to catalyze the discovery of new potential therapeutic agents. The Amaro Lab is also keenly interested in developing new multiscale simulation methods and novel modeling paradigms that scale from the level of atoms to whole cells, and beyond.
July 28 Dr. Shaochen Chen Dr. Chen is a Professor in the Nanoengineering Department at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He is also a faculty member of the Institute of Engineering in Medicine at UCSD. Before joining UCSD, Dr. Chen had been a Professor and a Pearlie D. Henderson Centennial Endowed Faculty Fellow in Engineering in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Texas at Austin. From 2008 to 2010, Dr. Chen served as the Program Director for the Nanomanufacturing Program in the National Science Foundation (NSF), where he directed the frontiers of nanomanufacturing research at NSF and managed 150 active grants of the program. Dr. Chen s research focuses on developing advanced nano/micro-manufacturing processes and nano/ micro-mechanical systems for biomedical and life sciences applications. Meantime, he investigates fundamental issues regarding near-field optics (e.g. plasmonics), thermal/fluid transport, and nanomechanics in these nano/ micro-systems. His lab has developed innovative three-dimensional, multi-functional micro and nanostructures with a gradient of material composition and topography, leading to applications for tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and solar energy harvesting The goal of his research is to overcome the technical limitations of large scale conventional manufacturing processes, develop new processes and nano/micro-devices with good understanding of fundamental physics and chemistry, and to use these nano/micro-systems to advance health care. His research is highly interdisciplinary, involving laser physics, photonics, nano/micro-manufacturing, thermal/fluid transport, nanomaterials, and biomedical engineering on a small length scale and/or time scale. More information can be found on his website: schen.ucsd.edu
