Companies such as Countrywide Energy Services, Aztec Well and CRS Reprocessing are examples of new ShaleNET employers. Countrywide Energy Services located in Eighty Four, PA, offers groundbreaking through completion, energy production services. Shawn Mitchell, CEO of Countrywide Energy has hired five ShaleNET participants since August 2012 and has maintained each employee. Aztec Well is a nationwide company that does everything from drilling to service. Aztec recently hired two ShaleNET graduates. The hiring manager said they were among the best applicants he has interviewed. He also mentioned that a past ShaleNET graduate was now a rig manager for Aztec. The newest employer to take interest in the ShaleNET training class has been CRS Reprocessing based in Lewisberry, PA. When this worldwide company began expanding it came to ShaleNET for its hiring. As of October 16, CRS Reprocessing has made offers to two ShaleNET graduates as well as one from WCCC s Natural Gas Technology program. 2 Raising Awareness of Energy Careers through Youth Energy Forum for Educators A new energy career awareness initiative created by Pennsylvania State Senator Tim Solobay was recently presented at the Beaver County Career and Technology Center. The Youth Energy Forum for Educators brought together local educators and representatives from the mining, oil and gas industries to discuss ways to prepare students for employment in the energy industry. ShaleNET was presented as a successful training model that leveraged partnerships in higher education, government and industry to create a pathway to employment in the natural gas industry. More than 100 people attended the Forum. ShaleNET Presented at the National Council for Continuing Education and Training in Reno, Nevada On October 15, 2012, Dr. Byron Kohut and Dr. Patrick Gerity presented ShaleNET during the national convention for the National Council for Continuing Education and Training in Reno, Nevada. The presentation highlighted the benefits of establishing a multi-state consortium to address the demands of a high priority occupation and the benefits of ShaleNET s talent matching system. This type of intake system and talent matching capability is far reaching. Through this program more than 9000 people have registered expressing an interest in working in the natural oil and gas field. Additionally, with little modification, ShaleNET will be expanding this system to accommodate workforce needs in Montana, North Dakota, Texas and Louisiana. Upcoming Events: ShaleNET Events: December 5, 2012 ShaleNET Eastern Region Meeting December 13, 2012 ShaleNET Western Region Meeting Industry Events: ShaleNET Presented in China Dr. Byron Kohut, the ShaleNET director at Westmoreland County Community College, recently presented ShaleNET to delegates from several major oil and gas companies and governmental agencies in the People s Republic of China. The conference, Shale Gas China 2012, brought together Chinese national oil companies, energy regulators, and local oil service companies to meet with international producers, suppliers, and drilling and oil service companies to discuss the latest shale gas projects in China and examine technologies and techniques for successful extraction and production in China. Shale exploration and extraction technologies are in its very early stages in China. What surfaced throughout the conference was that China shares many of the same hurdles present in the United States when it comes to exploring shale gas. Many of the hurdles to successful shale development in China were related to state and governmental policy governing extraction, tax policies, technology transfer, foreign investment, utilization policies, workforce training and skills gaps, and small and medium business investments in shale. Dr. Byron Kohut, the ShaleNET director at Westmoreland County Community College
3 $15 Million DOL Grant Awarded to Expand ShaleNET Recently ShaleNET was awarded a $14,961,027 million grant to continue and expand the program both geographically and programmatically through new partnerships. The grant, under the name ShaleNET US, will broaden the ShaleNET network to Texas and Ohio, provide a clear stackable career ladder for those who want to pursue additional training and certificates and allow the natural gas industry to confidently identify a local workforce with the skills they require. The ShaleNET US grant was among more than $500 million in funds competitively awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor to community colleges and universities nationwide for the development and expansion of innovative training programs. ShaleNET, which was launched in 2010 with a $4.9 million grant, is a coordinated network of industry, the public workforce system and training providers. It works to build an industry-recognized standardized training and certification program. The network s goal is to link talent to opportunity by effectively training local people and placing them into jobs that can lead to successful careers in the natural gas industry. Fourth Annual ShaleNET Forum Considered a Success The fourth annual ShaleNET Workforce Forum was held from October 22 24, 2012, at the Seven Springs Resort in Somerset County. Close to 175 participants from schools, colleges, workforce organizations, industry, and government agencies across Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, New York, Texas and other states came together to better understand and respond to the workforce needs of the oil & natural gas industry. Attendees heard presentations on the workforce development needs of mid- and downstream segments of the industry in addition to upstream and emerging trends. Jane Oates, Assistant Secretary of Employment and Training for the US Department of Labor was the Keynote Speaker. During her presentation, Assistant Secretary Oates stressed the importance of partnerships between industry, the public workforce system and education; of educating candidates on the career choices that are available to them and the level of training needed for these jobs; the need to reach out to veterans; and the value of offering industry recognized credentials. Overall, attendees commented that they gained a better understanding of the oil and natural gas industry, felt more informed on workforce initiatives underway in the Appalachian Basin and U.S., and greatly benefited from the opportunity to network with industry and peers from across the country. 4 ShaleNET Recognized by the International Economic Development Council Last month, the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance accepted the Gold Excellence in Economic Development Award for ShaleNET in the category of Economic Development Training for communities with populations of greater than 500,000 from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). The honor was presented at an awards ceremony during the IEDC Annual Conference in Houston, Texas. The award recognized ShaleNET, a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) funded $4.9 million dollar multistate, comprehensive recruitment, training, placement and retention program for jobs in the burgeoning natural gas industry throughout the Marcellus Shale footprint. Recently, the DOL awarded another grant $14.9 million to extend ShaleNET both programmatically and geographically. In addition to the original partnership between the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, PIOGA, Pennsylvania College of Technology and Westmoreland County Community College, ShaleNET U.S will see new partnerships with community colleges in Texas and Ohio.
