President s Message Happy New Year to everyone! I hope that new year has started well for you all, and that your time off was well spent with family and friends. I know that my new year is off to a good start even though my Steelers are out of playoffs a bit too early for my taste. As I reflect on past year and look forward to what future holds in coming year, it is hard not to be excited about our industry and challenges that await us. Secretary Schoch was our speaker at January luncheon, and had similar sentiments to offer. We thank him for taking time to come out and speak to us. We also thank him for his tireless efforts over last four years serving as our Secretary, and wish him best of luck with his next endeavor. Act 89 was truly historic legislation that has not only paved way for Pennsylvania going into next decade, but is currently serving as a model nationwide for or states that are facing same set of challenges that we faced here in PA. However, re is no rest for weary. The next challenge facing our industry will be getting infrastructure funding increased at national level. Efforts are ongoing to bring funding to forefront and, according to Sec. Schoch, infrastructure funding is one of three major issues that is currently being talked about in our nation s capital, and could actually be addressed in some manner in coming year. As with all efforts to bring about significant change, our industry must take action and make our voices heard to our elected leaders, so y continue to be reminded of importance of maintaining and upgrading our nation s infrastructure. According to most recent ASCE infrastructure report card, America s infrastructure recieved following grades: Roads D (42% of America s major highways are congested) Bridges C+ (1 in 9 bridges in America is structurally deficient) Transit D (45% of American households lack access to transit) In 1993, a gallon of gas cost $1.12 and, until recently, that same gallon was hovering around a national average of $3.50. Over 1 that 21 year span, federal tax on a gallon of gas has not increased, staying constant at $0.184 per gallon. Obviously, something needs to be done to keep up with rising cost of our infrastructure; but, in lies problem, re are too many ideas on how to fund a new program including those who don t think raising taxes is answer. In speaking with Mike Ryan prior to our lunch meeting, he indicated that out of 17 recent meetings with Pennsylvania s congressional leadership, re were probably 15 different ideas presented on how to fund infrastructure. Whatever solution ends up being, it is important for us all to Take Action! which is what ASCE is promoting at Please take some time in coming weeks to visit this website, if you haven t already, and tell Congress to fix our transportation system now. At this website you can sign a petition that urges Congress to get to work, your legislator directly, and/or sign up for news and updates via , which will keep you informed on this important issue. Please help spread word as well by sharing this website with ors! The more voices, louder message! On a sad note, our industry lost a good friend, Pasquale Pat Dougherty, on January 12th. Pat was a long-standing ASHE member, serving over years as a former National President as well as a former Delaware Valley Section President. While I never got chance to work with Pat over years and only frequently interacted with him at ASHE events, I have heard nothing but glowing remarks about what kind of man and engineer he was, which is what I would have expected. He will be missed. Our hearts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. In closing, I would like to extend a few thank you s to a couple of our Past Presidents for some generous donations to our scholarship fund. Dixon Early donated $100 in December, and Rich Heimbach donated back his 50/50 winnings at January lunch meeting, which was $112. Thank you, gentlemen! Your continued support of ASHE and its scholarship program is much appreciated! Stay warm, and see you at February dinner meeting!
