(For the analogy to work, shouldn t he be on the other end of that fishing pole?) Mark had been Grubb & Ellis No. 1 retail broker in the country and was chased by just about every company that does retail. (He chose Colliers because he liked the resources available to him and his team: Terrison Quinn, Peter Spragg, Mark Joens, Casey Mahony, and Jesika Tran-Nguyen). Although the market has taken a step back after perking up last year, he sees specialty grocers, deeper discount soft goods retailers, and fitness tenants continuing to look for sites. The trick to some of the larger fitness groups: They ll pay an attractive rent if landlords will give them the TI dollars, which can be upwards of $3M to $4M.

2 Speaking of grocers, Mark just signed a deal with Walmart s new Neighborhood Market concept it ll be in a former Circuit City in Rancho Santa Margarita. The discount giant wants to roll out 25 to 30 stores all at the same time (a la Kohl s and Fresh & Easy). He s also busy leasing up the Kaleidoscope in Mission Viejo (above), where a comedy club and a steakhouse with an entertainment component are in the works. On the other hand, he tells us the pharmacies claim to be active, but they re hyper selective, only pushing through deals that conform exactly to their footprint. When he s not leasing retail space, Mark s a big fisherman. On his last expedition, though, it was his wife who caught the bigger tuna (a 225-pound yellowfin). On another recent trip, Mark reeled in a 350-pound marlin. (How s that for a circle of excellence?) They ve got two kids, 9 and 2.5.

3 TRAVELS WITH CHARLIE If the name on Charlie McPhee s new business cards looks familiar, it should. He s just been hired as EVP of acquisitions and development of Catellus (effective Oct. 13), where he served from 1998 to about a year after the company's 2005 merger with ProLogis. He leaves Jones Lang LaSalle, where he was a managing director of the capital markets group, after just five months. Yesterday, we had a chat with Charlie, who acknowledged it s unusual for him to switch jobs so quickly but an opportunity came along to work with his former colleagues and boss at Catellus, Ted Antenucci. Charlie says in the last nine months, ProLogis sold the remaining

4 Catellus assets it owned to TPG Capital, and Ted became president/ceo of the reincarnated Catellus. Ted also was Catellus president during Charlie s first stint with the company. Two of the major projects they worked on together were Kaiser Commerce Center in San Bernardino and the Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo. The latter included a land swap requiring an act of Congress that resulted in the Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center (above), a 545k SF office build-to-suit. At Kaiser, Catellus turned a 588-acre former steel mill into an 8.5M SF business park. Meanwhile, JLL notes it still has a strong industrial team in place under the leadership of industrial brokerage president Craig Meyer (whom we snapped earlier this year at a NAIOP convention) and John Huguenard, who leads the firm s industrial capital markets business. While the company says it'll miss Charlie, it expects their ties to continue given JLL's client relationship with Catellus. STAR POWER

5 The paparazzi in us feels anyone coming out of Ivy at the Shore is fair game, so Saturday night our camera caught Kate Hudson and Matt Bellamy Reznick Group s western region managing principal Tom Fassett and glam wife Tammi. We joined them in celebrating Tom s first anniversary heading the rapidly expanding Century City office of the 1,000-employee firm the largest accounting firm in the US with a specialty in commercial real estate and expertise in affordable housing, renewable energy, and similar industry tax credits. Oh, and its other distinction is that it s our national strategic partner and we proudly work with its experts in many of our 17 cities across the US. Tom and Tammi arrived from Charlotte, NC, where he was with Reznick for 23 years, several managing that office, and where the couple was allowed to dine anonymously.

6 The smile on Tom s face and orange on Tom s shirt may have had a little something to do with alma mater Clemson thumping Virginia Tech that afternoon, meaning the Tigers became the first ACC football team in history to beat three ranked opponents in a row, culminating this week by itself moving up to No. 8 in the national rankings. Of course being where Tom and Tammi met, they ve always regarded it as No. 1. GETTING CHUMMY That s Jane Kaczmarek in the middle (maybe you were expecting Malcolm?) at the Downtown Women s Center s 14th annual gala at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The actress emceed the event,

7 which raised nearly $250k for the nonprofit. The event celebrated the center s expansion of permanent housing and support services for women in downtown s Skid Row, and its new social enterprise, a café and shop called MADE by DWC. Recognition went to The Good News Foundation LA news anchors and reporters who created the center s lending library and the Historic Resources Group s Christy McAvoy, who helped restore a 1926 shoe factory as the center s new home. (Afterward, the 300 attendees rummaged through the building to see if any strippy sandals or ankle boots were left behind.) Honorees included Bloomingdale s, which advised on the retail store; Munger, Tolles & Olson, which provided pro bono work on the center s expansion; and Union Bank. What's your good news?
