4 CIP-ASA The CIP-ASA Training Seminar took place June 13-15, 2016 in Miami, FL. There are some informative articles in the Summer Soundings which has gone to press concerning this three-day seminar which was well attended. Special thanks to our event sponsors: Gold Sponsors Resolve Marine Group; Smit Salvage Americas; and T&T Salvage; and Silver sponsor Ardent! PREP Guidelines ASA members have been working with a coalition of maritime industries since early May concerning a matter of importance to ASA's Core Four and Regional Provider members, the PREP Guidelines. The coalition has been led by Kathy Metcalf, President and CEO, Chamber of Shipping of America. Thanks to Kathy for consolidating the many comments into a master document! And thanks go to Jim Calhoun for his continuing guidance and his work in drafting coalition letters presenting the group's concerns. This was in line with his chairmanship of the Regulatory Affairs Committee, and also because he's good at things like this! Other News The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and the American Salvage Association have signed a Cooperation and Technical Assistance Agreement as of June 15th. This is a result of continued work from Jim Elliott, Vice President T&T Salvage, over the past year or so, and he signed the agreement as Vice President of ASA, along with Jorge Luis Quijano Arango, Administrator of the Panama Canal Authority, a leading autonomous agency that manages the Panama Canal Interoceania Highway. To quote from Jim's article in the Summer issue of Soundings which will come out shortly, "This agreement serves as a mutually beneficial opportunity to enhance emergency planning, preparedness and response operations in Panama Canal waters and to
5 provide a timely and quality salvage response to vessel incidents." The whole article gives a great background history of the Canal. Thanks to Jim for his hard work and persistence.
