3 OVERVIEW Loading and discharge of ballast water is an essential part of a ship s operation, and is fundamental to maintaining safe operations. This water can contain thousands of aquatic or marine microbes, plants and animals, which are transported across the globe. Untreated ballast water released at the ship s destination can have a considerable environmental impact in the form of transferred invasive species. Hundreds of such invasions have already taken place, sometimes with devastating consequences for the local ecosystem. Aims of the two-day event The Master class will bring delegates up to date on the standing of the Ballast Water Management Convention and comprise keynote addresses, presentations on highly relevant issues first examining the issues associated with sampling and analysis and secondly, looking at the problems implementing compliant systems from the ship-owners and suppliers perspective; experts in technology The Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention was entered into force on 8 September, 2017 to introduce global regulations to control the transfer of potentially invasive species. With the treaty now in force, ships need to manage their ballast water. In order to meet the Convention requirements, ship-owners must install a ballast water management system that cleans the water before it is discharged. This master class seeks to elaborate on the implementation of Ballast Water Management systems and the regulation associated with it. Key to the master class is equipping shipping professionals with the knowledge to comply with the recently enforced global regulations regarding Ballast Water Management. Key areas of discussion include: Status of Ballast Water Management in Africareview the key issues associated with ballast water transfer and how transported species have affected many local habitats and resulted in spread of disease Reasons for sound ballast water management and Challenges in way of implementing BWM and conducting Ballasting Operations The international regime: The Ballast Water Convention and SA ballast Management bill Summary of treatment technologies - review the operational matters of the key treatment technologies available and challenges associated. Installation, retrofitting and surveys Imo Global initiative
