Vickie Fitz-Gerald, vice president of workforce development, receives the grant from Chris MacPherson, branch manager for the Metro office, who nominated Goodwill.
2 P A G E 2 Goodwill Industries Volunteer Services G.I.V.S. News At the November G.I.V.S. Meeting, the new 2011 Officers were installed by Maggie Stringer. She encouraged all the new officers to take their responsibilities seriously and to do it with a humble heart. She passed out a piece of paper in the shape of a hand, that quoted a hand up, not a hand out, which is one of Goodwill s many themes G.I.V.S. Officers President - Mary Parker 1st Vice President - Ann Speaks 2nd Vice President - Roberta Collins Treasurer - Sherry Maynard Secretary - Donna Robins The annual G.I.V.S. Christmas luncheon was held at Lynn Trzcinski s home December 12 at 12:00 noon. Several G.I.V.S. members gathered together for a time of fellowship and Christmas cheer. There were several visitors at the luncheon who were interested in becoming members. The Christmas Luncheon serves as the annual membership drive for the G.I.V.S. group. Lynn s home was beautifully decorated with 192 nativity scenes from countries around the world. Lynn told the group that missionaries and friends will bring her back nativity scenes from their visits, and she also collects them during her travels. Mark your calendars for the annual G.I.V.S. March Benefit on March 31, 2011 at Arrowhead Country Club Doors Open at 11:00 a.m. for the Silent Auction, and the event starts at 11:30 a.m. There will be a Silent Auction, Fashion Show by Chantilly Boutique, Luncheon, and Bridge Tournament. 4 P A G E 4 Remembering Mary Matthews Mary Matthews November 14, October 9, 2010 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you. Philippians 1:3 Mary Matthews was the type of person that could light up the room with her smile. She always offered a word of encouragement or a hug to her fellow co-workers. Everyone that knew Mary knew how passionate she was about God and her church, her family, crafts, and Alabama football. She always greeted everyone that walked in Goodwill with a friendly smile. No matter who they were, or why they were coming into Goodwill, she always treated everyone with respect and dignity. Mary worked in the Workforce Development Department at Goodwill for over 5 years, where she used her talents to help reach out to those around her. She passed away on October 9, She leaves behind a husband of 32 years, Thomas Matthews; children, Luke Matthews, Teresa Matthews, and Amy Hall. All of the staff, volunteers, and board members of Goodwill extend their condolences to the Matthews Family. She will be greatly missed at Goodwill, but she will always be remembered. To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children to leave the world a better place to know even one life has breathed easier because you lived. This is to have succeeded. Ralph Waldo Emerson Goodwill Receives Website from LWT Goodwill Industries was selected by LWT to receive marketing assistance during the firm s ninth annual CreateAthon event, on October 7 and 8. LWT is a Montgomery-based marketing, media and interactive firm. The CreateAthon is a 24-hour effort that provides free strategic marketing planning, creative and interactive development services to non-profits. The other organizations that were selected as CreateAthon 2010 clients were: National Alliance on Mental Illness of Alabama, Montgomery Public Schools Academies Program, Brantwood Children s Home, One Place Family Justice Center, Montgomery City-County Public Library System, KidOne Transport System and Dusty Trails Horse Rescue. www. algoodwill.org The staff, volunteers and board members of Goodwill are honored and excited to be chosen by LWT.
