2 LETTIE PATE WHITEHEAD EVANS AWARD 14 th anniversary PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY The recipient of the award will be a woman who has attained excellence in her profession allowing her to have the skills and experience to become a corporate board member. These women are role models to those who aspire to executive leadership positions and as future board members. The award is for women who are currently serving on a Georgia based corporate, private or public, for profit board (1+ year serving time required) or Georgia residents serving on an out-of-state corporate board(s). Because all of our final nominees will have achieved similar levels of career excellence, the distinguishing criteria will be: y How she is recognized as an outstanding board member through her contributions to good corporate governance; and y Her active role as an advocate, as demonstrated through her actions and impact on other women, for OnBoard s mission of increasing the number of women in executive suites and on corporate boards. Recipient must be present at the annual board study reception, dinner event and award ceremony on November 9, 2016 in order to qualify. ADVOCATE, INSPIRE, CONNECT Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans was one of the first women to serve as a director of a major American corporation. In 1934, she was appointed to the Board of Directors of The Coca-Cola Company, a position she held for nearly 20 years. For your reference, a short biography on Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans is included on the back of this brochure. ABOUT THE SELECTION PROCESS A panel of judges made up of members of the business community, OnBoard Board Members and Advocates of OnBoard will make a final determination of all awards. All information submitted is completely confidential and will not be returned. Incomplete nominations will not be considered. INSPIRE: How she has achieved excellence in her profession and how she is recognized for that achievement. CAREER EXCELLENCE Information would include but not necessarily be limited to the following: a. Financial data of business managed by nominee that might include number of employees in the nominee s direct organization, revenue, client accounts, percentage of net income growth over the past few years or other financial data that dimensions the span of control of the nominee. b. How has the nominee been recognized by others for career achievements? Please include recent awards received. c. List the nominee s current/recent involvement in civic and non profit groups that demonstrate the nominee s reach beyond her business activities. d. Impact of the nominee on the success of the company or firm. SUPPORT OF OTHER WOMEN IN BUSINESS Information would include but not necessarily be limited to the following: a. How does the nominee influence other women in her organization to succeed? b. Describe her involvement in creating a workplace that encourages improved work/life balance and advancement of female employees. c. How does the nominee influence women in business outside of her company or firm? d. How has the nominee been recognized for her mentoring or other such activities? IMPACT ON CORPORATE GOVERNANCE Information would include but not necessarily be limited to the following: a. Why do her peers regard her contributions in the boardroom to be outstanding? b. Describe specific examples of her impact on good corporate governance. c. In what ways has the nominee directly supported diversity on corporate boards? 5 ABOUT LETTIE PATE WHITEHEAD EVANS LETTIE PATE WHITEHEAD was born Letitia Pate in Bedford County, Virginia in She was educated at private schools in Bedford and Lynchburg. In 1895, she married Joseph Brown Whitehead, a young attorney and they made their home in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Mr. and Mrs. Whitehead had two sons, Joseph B., Jr. and Conkey Pate. In 1899, Mr. Whitehead and an associate approached The Coca-Cola Company with the idea of bottling Coca-Cola, a fountain beverage then growing in popularity in the South. The two entrepreneurs secured an exclusive contract to bottle and sell Coca-Cola throughout most of the United States. Mr. Whitehead and his family moved to Atlanta in 1903 to further develop the Coca Cola bottling business. It prospered and Mr. and Mrs. Whitehead quickly became business, church and civic leaders in Atlanta. Unfortunately, Mr. Whitehead s promising business career was to be a short one. He died of pneumonia in 1906 at the age of 42 while visiting at his wife s home in Virginia. Mrs. Whitehead immediately assumed control of the family s business interests, serving as Chairman of the Board of the Whitehead Holding Company and President of the Whitehead Realty Company. In managing the affairs of these closely held corporations she sought the advice of trusted friends, foremost among them Robert W. Woodruff, who had ascended to the leadership of The Coca Cola Company. Mrs. Whitehead developed a keen insight into the soft drink business. She became one of the first women to serve as a director of a major American corporation when she was appointed in 1934 to the Board of Directors of The Coca-Cola Company, a position she held for almost 20 years. Seven years after her husband s death Lettie Pate Whitehead married Col. Arthur Kelly Evans, a retired Canadian Army officer. They made their principal residence in Hot Springs, Virginia. During her life Mrs. Evans contributed to over 130 charities, principally in Virginia and Georgia. In Virginia, she gave generously to the College of William and Mary, Washington and Lee University, Episcopal High School, the Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg and other institutions. She served as a trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. Her philanthropies in Georgia included Emory University, Agnes Scott College, Berry College, Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and the Georgia Institute of Technology.
