LOYAL SERVANT: Music! If the Prince of Good Tone were to play the magical song, then she would awaken. KING LEGATO: Well, what is the magical song? Can we play it now? ROYAL MESSENGER: A quest is a long search for something. PRINCE OF GOOD TONE: I am up for the challenge. ON DECK: Aunt Rhody, Uncle Rhody WIZARD: (Enters) Hello, Prince of Good Tone. I am the Waltzing Wizard. Would you like to hear me play the Brahms Waltz? PRINCE OF GOOD TONE: Sure. I always enjoy hearing a good Waltz. WIZARD plays BRAHMS WALTZ (King & Queen waltz together; others sway) PRINCE OF GOOD TONE: Thank you! That was a wonderful performance -- but I have to leave on my quest to find the magical song that will awaken Sleeping Bow. WIZARD: Oh, I almost forgot to tell you this important clue. You will know you have found the magical song because after it is played you will hear this sound: KIT KNIGHT & DU PRE BASS play MAGICAL HARMONIC on their basses WIZARD: Then call the King and Queen on your cell phone and they will put it by Sleeping Bow s ear to see if she will wake up. I didn t hear the magical sound KIT KNIGHT & DU PRE BASS play Non-Magical Harmonic on their basses ROYAL MESSENGER: That is the sound, and I did not hear it. That means this is not the magical piece the Prince is looking for, but thank you anyway. (BOAT & RIVER in place onstage) Page 6 of 18 Copyright November 7, 2013 Sleeping Bow
NARRATOR: Next the Prince had to cross the Farmington River. He came to the boat launch where some sailors rowed him across. I forgot to hold up my cell phone! ROYAL MESSENGER: I m way ahead of you, boss. (holds up cell phone.) I was listening for the magical tone KIT KNIGHT & DuPRE BASS play Non-Magical Harmonic on their basses ROYAL MESSENGER:... but that was not it. Bye-bye. (Sailors exit. BOAT is removed.) MAGICAL GOLDEN ROSIN & MUSICAL VIOLA: (Enter & play chasing scales) NARRATOR: (speak during scales) The Prince continued on his quest to find the magic song, when all of a sudden he ran into the Magical Golden Rosin and the Musical Viola practicing away in the Unionville Forest. Page 7 of 18 Copyright November 7, 2013 Sleeping Bow
MAGICAL GOLDEN ROSIN: Hello, Prince of Good Tone. Welcome to the Unionville Forest. I am Magical Golden Rosin. Rosin is what you rub on your bow. It turns into a white powder and helps the bow stay on the strings. PRINCE OF GOOD TONE: Do you think I could have some for my bow? MAGICAL GOLDEN ROSIN: Oh yes, I like to share. If you use my magic rosin you will always have a beautiful tone. (Magical Golden Rosin offers the rosin to the Prince of Good Tone. He rubs the rosin on his bow.) PRINCE OF GOOD TONE: Let s play Bach s Minuet together. I know the King and Queen have been having everyone in the castle learn how to dance the minuet. (Dancers take places in front of the stage. Follow instructions!) MAGICAL GOLDEN ROSIN & PRINCE OF GOOD TONE Play BACH S MINUET #3. Everyone else dances. At end of dance, Dancers return to their places. (During the dance, King holds cell phone to Sleeping Bow s ear. At the end, Sleeping Bow sits bolt upright, shakes her head No, flops back down. King & Queen sadly shake heads No. ) ROYAL MESSENGER: (Listens) Well, that was beautiful, but it was not the magical song to wake up the Princess because I did not hear the magical sound. KIT KNIGHT & DU PRE BASS play Non-Magical Harmonic on their basses MUSICAL VIOLA: Hello, I am the Musical Viola. The viola is a musical string instrument that looks like the violin but it is a bit bigger so it has a deeper tone than the violin. See the difference between the violin and my big viola? (Musical Viola holds up his viola, and Prince holds up his violin, and they compare sizes. Alternatively, have Musical Viola use a 1/10 size violin from offstage.) ON DECK: Magical Ladies PRINCE OF GOOD TONE: Do you think you could play a piece for us so we can hear the difference? MUSICAL VIOLA: Of course, I would be delighted. My good friend Magical Golden Rosin just gave me some rosin for my bow so I will have a beautiful tone. Here is a regal piece called Chorus from Judas Maccabaeus. Page 8 of 18 Copyright November 7, 2013 Sleeping Bow
MUSICAL VIOLA plays CHORUS FROM JUDAS MACCABAEUS (While they play, Queen holds cell phone to Sleeping Bow s ear. At the end, Sleeping Bow sits bolt upright, shakes her head No, flops back down. (6 chairs onstage) (Horse Hair Cello Orchestra enter and sit in cello chairs, ready to play. Basses enter.) NARRATOR: On they went, the Prince of Good Tone and his faithful Royal Messenger, on their quest to find the song that would awaken Princess Sleeping Bow. 11 POPPER CELLO: Hello and Welcome. We are all cellists because we love the deep sound of the cello. OFFENBACH CELLO: And I m Offenbach Cello. I often Back Off from these horses. STARKER CELLO: Woah, Nellie! Steady there, horse, steady. Starker Cello s my name. PRINCE OF GOOD TONE: Thanks, that was so much fun, but we have to continue our quest to find the magic song to awaken Sleeping Bow. (Horse Hair Cello Orchestra leaves the stage. Knights enter.) ( Remove 3 chairs but leave 3 chairs onstage.) NARRATOR: Just as the Prince of Good Tone and the Royal Messenger were deep into the Forest, they met the King s Knights. KEY SIGNATURE KNIGHT: Halt! 12 KORONET KNIGHT: I am Koronet Knight. The King wanted us to assist you. Are you lost? Do you need the Royal Knights to lead the way? PRINCE OF GOOD TONE: We are following the path. So far everyone has been very friendly and sharing their music. KLENGEL KNIGHT: I am Klengel Knight. You should be careful in these woods. There are some very magical ladies who may play tricks on you. ROYAL MESSENGER: We have met the Magical Ladies and they were very good dancers. KIT KNIGHT: I am Kit Knight. My favorite is the low notes. The very low notes. We have a piece we have been working on and we hope it is the magic song that will awaken Sleeping Bow. DU PRE KNIGHT: Did you know that the bass has the same strings as the violin but backwards. Our highest string is G, then D, then A, then low E. (Pluck each string as you say its name.) BASSES play D BLUES by Nicholas Walker [or other bass piece] KAYSER KNIGHT: Our song is Hunters Chorus, written especially for the Royal Knights by Carl Maria von Weber. At the end, Sleeping Bow sits bolt upright, shakes her head No, flops back down. King & Queen sadly shake heads No. ) (Royal Messenger listens, Kit Knight & Du Pre Bass play Non-Magical Harmonic, Messenger shakes head No.) ON DECK: TAM ROYAL MESSENGER: That was a very exciting piece, even though it wasn t the magical song that will awaken Sleeping Bow, and I do like the low tones. PRINCE OF GOOD TONE: So do I, but we must be on our way. ALL KNIGHTS: Be careful; the forest can be a tricky place. Bye. Page 12 of 18 Copyright November 7, 2013 Sleeping Bow
(Knights and Basses leave the stage. Remove cello chairs. Prince of Good Tone & Royal Messenger continue on, looking fearfully around them, exiting stage.) NARRATOR: Then All of a sudden POP! The Three Magical Ladies appeared, and they were mad! (Three Magical Ladies pop out, laughing with attitude.) MOZART MAGICAL LADY: Can you believe the nerve of those two? Coming in here to OUR forest & trampling it all up with their quest and their dancing. MASSENET MAGICAL LADY: Yeah, they eat all the nuts & berries and take all the good rosin from our pine trees. MAHLER MAGICAL LADY: They re awful! They even mess up our cellphone reception! MOZART MAGICAL LADY: And where did that so-called Prince get that Magical Golden Rosin? MASSENET MAGICAL LADY: I ll bet he sneaked it out of the Music Teacher s Studio! MAHLER MAGICAL LADY: We ve got to find them and teach them a lesson! MOZART MAGICAL LADY: We can snap their bows in two so they can only pizzicato! MASSENET MAGICAL LADY: Pizzicato means plucking the strings and we can untune their strings! MAHLER MAGICAL LADY: We ll track them down and make them pay. ALL 3 MAGICAL LADIES: We ve got to find them & stop them!
