3 Fiction Fiction is on the shelves: A Z by authors surname New Fiction is on the spinner in the Fiction section of the LRC Can t find the book you want? Ask at the desk and we will order it in for you. Please look after your book. Try not to leave it in your school bag for long periods of time, they get very tatty/dirty/wet. Treat it nicely and then everyone gets a pleasant reading experience!

4 Non Fiction Non-Fiction is arranged on the shelves in Dewey order. Dewey guides are available on the walls and in the rack by our desk. We have Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias available as well. If you cannot find what you want ask a librarian for help

5 Click the icon on your desktop. It should log you in automatically, but if not it is: j.smith and your date of birth i.e You can also go in via Frog on the LRC page. The Reading Cloud is our library catalogue which you can search, check your account, write and read reviews and much more Search, reserve or download resources across the Reading Cloud Recommend resources to other students: Write or video online book reviews Chat online with other students about books that interest them Blog about their favourite books and authors Share their Book, Author and Profile "Likes" with the Reading Cloud community Access the Reading Cloud through mobile technologies

6 Writing a Review in the Reading Cloud Find the book you want to review by typing in the title or author You must log in before any reviews can be written Click on the book you want to review Click create review Write or record your review and click save. Don t forget to award it some Scroll further down the page and click the user reviews to read what others in our school have been saying. All borrower reviews must be approved by the Librarian before they are displayed for everyone to read.

7 Read online Click on VLeBooks on your desktop or in Frog Or visit Organisation ID = brookfield User name = jsmitht01 (Initial, surname, tutor group) Password = brookfield Once logged on you can change your password. It will ask for your school the first time you go on. Ask at the desk for further help Devices to read on are available to borrow or use in the LRC

8 LRC on Frog In the student area there is a link to the LRC pages. You will find reading lists, links to the Reading Cloud, VLeBooks, and our newsletter. Keep an eye on the LRC door for notices of activities in the LRC and any closures etc. Click LRC Messages

9 Magazines and Newspaper We have two daily papers for you to read and First News on a Friday We also have White Dwarf, Match of the Day, Shout, Top Gear and Empire for you to read. Graphic Novels and Manga We have lots of Graphic Novels (similar to comics) for you to read, There are classic novels in full, e.g. Shakespeare/Austin and some which are retold as well as modern fiction e.g. Horowitz/Colfer/Shan We also have lots of Manga, which is very popular. The books originated from Japan and are written backwards in comic strip form why not have a go at reading one?

10 Available for you to use We have a photocopier you can use: 5p for A4 10p for A3 Websites Issues Online: Hundreds of articles, facts and statistics on today s social issues Drugs and Alcohol, Environmental and Global Issues, Economics and Welfare, Family and Relationships and many more. Try logging in at Username = BROOKFIELD Password = We also have Fact Files and Essential Articles at Log on = Brookfield Password = buttercup The books are also available in the LRC to use and you are able to photocopy them We also subscribe to eclips which is an online careers information site Password = SO31 7DU

11 Computer use in LRC We have ten computers in the LRC you are welcome to use for doing home learning tasks and research. (They are for school work only). We also have ten Ipads which can be used during a lesson with your teachers permission or in break times. You are not able to save your work to site or print on these. Research only. We have eight Linx computers to use at desks. You will need to log on to these and you can save your work and print. There is CCTV in the LRC

12 How to borrow a book We use biometric fingerprinting in the LRC (the same as for lunches) Bring the book of your choice to the desk, put your finger on the pad and we will issue the book to you. You can borrow two books to start with, but if you are good at bringing them back, you can have up to six. You can borrow them for two weeks. You can renew your books twice without us seeing them, by coming in or ing us. That is a six week loan in total and then we will ask to see them before we renew them again. Dvd s can be taken out on a Friday and brought back on the Monday. Newspapers and magazines are for reading in the LRC only.

13 Overdue book? Of course not! But if you do have overdue books, you will receive a series of reminders: 1. to you 2. to you 3. home from LRC Manager 4. home from Head Teacher 5. home (invoice) for the cost of the book (repeated until returned) Also your tutor and House Leaders will received notification of your late book/s We charge 1p a day for over dues and 50p for DVD over dues, but we are happy to have the book back and a donation in our charity box instead. If books are borrowed for long periods, it means other users of the LRC are unable to read them and if it is a very popular book, this is unfair. Be a responsible borrower please. You do not want a detention. Also lost books cost the school and ultimately your parents money.

14 Student Librarians At the beginning of October we will advertise for Student Librarians to help us in the LRC We run a training package to enable you to help us and other users of the LRC If you love books and libraries, why not come and sign up. It also counts towards the school reward system and merits are given. We also have the occasional get together and of course you get to see the new books first! Clubs We have a WARHAMMER club in the LRC on Wednesdays. You may bring your soldiers into the LRC before school and they can spend the day here at your own risk and play after school. We also have a Read and Rave group, which is a reading group. We shadow the Carnegie or the Hampshire Book Award each year as well as design displays, talk books and eat biscuits! Ask at the LRC desk if you want to join in. Yu-Gi-Oh Club where they trade and battle their cards ask in the LRC for info.

15 A few little rules Everyone is welcome in the LRC, but we do have to have some rules for the benefit of everyone. Please do not eat or drink in the LRC as this causes damage to books and it is very unpleasant to open a book and find it all dirty! No chewing gum -this is not allowed anywhere in school. Please do not bring mobile telephones and MP3 players etc. into the LRC. This includes after lesson times. They are inconvenient to other users and against school rules. Please place all bags, coats, scarves and gloves etc. in the cubicles provided. This stops the LRC being cluttered and they are a health and safety hazard. Computers are for school work only we only have ten computers in the LRC and therefore, they have to be used for school work and home learning tasks only. Use is monitored and you will be asked to come off if necessary. Please be considerate of other users at all times. We will try and notify you in advance if the LRC has to close for meetings etc. There will be a message written up on the board in the LRC

16 Help! Remember we are here to help you with your home learning tasks, finding books and information and if you have any questions about the school, please ask. If you know you are doing a particular topic for home learning, you can come in and ask us to find books for you, which you can collect later. We liaise with your teachers to have the books available in the LRC to do your home learning, as well as books to use in lesson time. We want you to make the LRC a place to come to read and do your home learning. We want you to have ownership of the space. If you have any suggestions on what you would like to see in here, or you can t find a particular book by your favourite author please come and ask and we will order it for you, and you can be the first to read it, before is available to everyone.
