4 Circle (Pie) Graphs Use When... You are working with Percents. Your data must add up to100% Practice: There are 20 schools day in an average month. If Sue brings apples on 10 of the days, oranges on 5, blueberries on 2 and bananas on 3; tell me what percent of the month she brings each fruit. Use a graph to depict your answer.

12 Bar Graph Use When... You want to compare values side by side. Practice: Joe went to the market and bought 13 potatoes, 17 cucumbers, 7 watermelons, and 10 carrots. Make a graph to compare how much of each item Joe bought.

15 Line Graph Use When... There is a constant change. Usually the change is time, but can be other measurements. Practice: Every year Blue Birds eat different amounts of beetles each month. To the right is data collected by a field researcher. Use this data to create a graph of the Blue Birds eating pattern. 21 What graph should we use? 1. Sue practices her sprints every week. Each week she times herself on the 100 meter dash. What type of graph should she use to display her data. 2. Barry wants to know what percent of his bills goes to each of seven different companies. What type of graph should he use? 3. Stacey wants to compare eight varieties of flowers that grow in June. She wants to see which one is the tallest. What type of graph would show her data best?

22 Practice on your own. Take out a sheet of paper and tell me for each example below which type of graph should you use and WHY? 1. Nichole wants to know what percent of her clothes are each color in the rainbow. 2. Matt wants to compare fifteen different guitars according to how loud they get. 3. Jared needs to compare the length of four different fishing lines he ll need for fly fishing. 4. Mary wants to see how high her grass grow from April to August. 5. Leslie needs to know what percent of her twenty children go to elementary, middle and high school.

23 Graphing Game Time!!! Each team of two will receive a handful of each color of beans. One person will decide a secret pattern of bean removal. Example: the first round they will remove 1 of each color bean, the second round 2 of each color bean, the third 3 of each color bean and so on. The other will collect data each round and then graph it to reveal what the secret pattern was. First ask yourself...what type of graph do I need to use?
