3 Angela's 3 open garden Shutterstock When Angela s husband Tim was dying, a Marie Curie Nurse cared for him at home. To mark the 10th anniversary of Tim s death, she decided to hold an open garden event raising money for Marie Curie in his memory. I opened my garden up to the people in my village and it was such an amazing day. We sold Italian food, and put on a cake stall and face painting. We also set up a memory tree. People could pay for a balloon and attach a message to someone they missed or had lost. The idea was that, at the end of the event, we d release them and they d sail off to heaven, giving the messages to our loved ones. We had yellow balloons for Marie Curie. It was quite a windy day so when we released them they really took off. We played one of my favourite songs. It was so emotional. It s funny because I d bought 40 balloons, but as we were blowing them up, one popped and we ended up with only 39. Tim s best friend said: Isn t it lovely that you ve got 39 balloons, because he was 39 when he died? I d never thought of it that way, but it made the event even more special. * When using balloons as part of any fundraising event, please remember to consider the environment.

4 4 2. How many daffs in the jar? Make every daff count Fill a jar with daffodils and charge your friends or workmates 2 to guess how many are inside. Ordering a pack of daffodil pins will mean you ll always have a few on hand to offer in exchange for a donation. Offer a flower to friends and family Let your nearest and dearest pick up a daff. Suggest a minimum donation of 1.

5 So many fun ways to raise money 5 From hosting a blowout banquet to running your first 5k, every penny you raise counts for people living with a terminal illness. So how do you go about organising your fundraiser? 3. Brighten up your workplace 1 Pick an idea This guide is packed full of suggestions to help you get started. Of course, if nothing here takes your fancy, feel free to come up with an idea of your own. 3 Promote the event Once you ve sorted out the details, think about how you ll get the most people involved and who can help you spread the word. Arrange daffodil pins next to your fundraising donation box and ask management to match funds donated by staff. 2 Plan your activity Even the simplest activities need some planning and preparation, and the earlier you get started the better. Location is an important thing to consider. For example, do you need to book a venue or plot a route? 4 Pay in your money When the money s all collected, it s time to tally up your total. 6 6 Spring makeover challenge Spring is the perfect time to refresh your wardrobe, try a new activity or cut out an annoying habit. But it s even better if you can do it for a great cause. Making a change can benefit you. But raising money means you could also help people who need care at the end of their life. So step out of your comfort zone and do something different for Marie Curie! Bright ideas Try something new each day Whether you test out a new sport or learn a new skill, take the plunge in return for sponsorship. Say yes to everything All within reason, of course! Remember to pick up sponsors for added motivation. Spring frock swap Ask for a 3 donation per clothing item exchanged. Give something up for March Whether it s Facebook or alcohol, kick your chosen habit for the month and get sponsored to do it. Don t forget Keep it legal If you re planning any street collections as part of your activity, you ll need a licence. We also recommend that when you count the money you ve collected, you do so with another person present. 7 7 Ixxxxxxxx Image Source xxxxxxx Wear yellow for spring To help you get into the spirit of the appeal and get ready for spring why not organise a day of wearing yellow, and charge friends 1 to take part? You could even dress as daffodils for a fun night out and bring a collection box with you. It s sure to be a conversation-starter!

8 8 Say it with flowers As it s Mother s Day on 26 March, why not surprise your mum with some daffodils? Throughout the Great Daffodil Appeal, Wyevale Garden Centres will be giving 10% of the RRP on fresh-cut and potted daffodils to Marie Curie, meaning a gift for your mum could also help families who need care most. 9 Feel good doing good 9 Fundraising doesn t have to be all work, work, work. So why not pick an activity with the feel-good factor? Choose something indulgent or relaxing and you could treat your friends, family and even yourself. Book in some quality time and make raising money a piece of cake! Bright ideas Afternoon tea party Share a slice of something nice and collect a delicious donation of 10 per head. Re-energising yoga Ask a teacher to run a class for free and invite friends to unwind for 7 each. Cocktail evening Charge an entrance fee per person and raise a glass for Marie Curie. Pamper day Offer mood-lifting massages or nail painting for a small fee. Don t forget Keep it legal When running any activity, remember you may be liable for any accidents or injuries that take place. Be sure to double check on health and safety as well as insurance before you get started.

10 10 Calling all creative types Whether you re an expert baker or card-making guru, now s the time when your passion or hobby can really come into its own. Or if your friends have some creative skills to share, why not get them involved too? Combine your talents and you could be knitting, singing or moulding your way to fundraising success. With all this artistic energy, who knows what you could make for Marie Curie? Bright ideas Crafternoon card and gift making Get out the glue gun and glitter then sell on the results to raise money. Bake-off challenge Price goodies from 1 upwards and do a taste test to pick the winner. Talent masterclass Expert in crochet, dancing or origami? Run a class and charge 5 per person. Charity karaoke Charge friends 3 to take part and offer a prize for the winning rendition. Don t forget Keep it clean It may not come as a surprise that food hygiene should come high on your to-do list. 11 11 Image Source Think big with marketing If you plan to hold an art event or concert, getting as many people interested as possible is key. By promoting it through local, or even national, media you can reach a much wider audience.

12 12 Image Source Feel inspired by Feel Good Fridays Every Friday, the Marie Curie Hospice, Glasgow hosts a social session for residents and their families. Live singers, nibbles and drinks all make it an exciting weekly occasion, creating lots of memorable moments. By raising money for Marie Curie, your event could be just as much of a success!

13 Party time 13 Whether you throw a glittering gala or dress-up day with workmates, there are tons of ways to have a great time and raise money in the process. You could boost the fundraising power of your event with a competition or raffle. So why not ask local businesses to donate a prize and get ready to be the host with the most? Bright ideas Daffodil day or yellow party Deck the walls with yellow and raise money by charging an entrance fee. Get quizzical Jump into the role of quizmaster and charge 5 per person testing their knowledge. Throwback Thursdays Set a fee to join in with a fun, weekly event. Musical chairs or prawn cocktail anyone? Dress-up day Choose a theme as wild or adventurous as you like and collect donations to take part. And while you re bringing in the pounds for our nurses, you could even end up losing a few off the scales. Whether you thrive off the energy of team sports or prefer a solo challenge, it s all about netting a great result for Marie Curie. Bright ideas Office games From chair races to a 10m tea run, you could charge a 2 entrance fee per game. Fun run or March marathon Whether it s your first 5k or a marathon, pick up sponsorship as you go. Charity game, set or match Hold a charity football match, tennis tournament or golf day and charge 3 per team. Fitness challenge Set a running, swimming, cycling or walking goal over the month of March and get sponsored per mile you travel. Don t forget Get fit in the right kit Whether you re planning a cycle ride or an indoor challenge, make sure you have the right clothing and equipment. Every 20 you raise pays for an hour of care from a Marie Curie Nurse. 70 pays for essential equipment used by our nurses to move terminally ill people safely. 180 pays for one of our nurses to look after someone with a terminal illness through the night. Whatever you do, however much you raise, you ll be helping Marie Curie Nurses to support families when they need it most. We re here for people living with any terminal illness, and their families.
