Scenic Design- The design concept for the set- includes research, rough sketches, floor plans, details, & either scale models or scale renderings. 2. Prop Design- The design concept for all hand and set props- includes research, rough sketches, prop lists, and blueprints or plans for any props that will be built 3. Costume Design- The design concept for the costumes- includes rough sketches for all characters and costume changes in the play 4. Hair & Make-up Design- The design concept for hair and make-up- includes make-up designs for all characters in the play including any special effects. 5. Publicity Design- The design concept for publicity- includes poster, program, t-shirt, informative press release, story press release, and educational packets 6. Light Design- The design concept for lights 7. Sound Design- The design concept for sound 8. Designer- Person responsible for the design for a particular show 9. Dramaturgy- research done before beginning the design process 10. Synopsis- a brief summary of the play that does not give away the ending 11. Protagonist- the main character in the story 12. Antagonist- the person working against the main character in the story 13. Cast- the people playing the roles in a particular production 14. Initial Incident- The first indication there may be a problem 15. Conflict- the main problem in the story 16. Rising Action- something that moves the action forward by making the conflict worse 17. Climax- Highest dramatic moment in the story 18. Resolution (Dénouement) - What happens as a result of the conflict being solved 19. Period- the point in time where the play takes place 20. Spine- the main message or idea that holds the play together 21. Mood- How the author wants the audience to feel during the play 22. Design elements- things like line, shape, texture, color etc. used to create a certain mood in the play 23. The pictures the designer uses to inform & inspire their designs 24. Title- name of the play 1

2 25. Playwright- Author 26. Characters- people who inhabit the world of the play 27. Scene- a specific moment or section of the story in a single location and time 28. Preliminary or Rough Sketch- an audience viewpoint sketch suggesting the overall look of the set piece. 29. Highlight- using lighter colors to make something more prominent or a lighter weight 30. Shadows- using darker colors to make something less prominent or heavier weight 31. Title Box- The information used to identify the play, designer, and scale in architectural drawings 32. Logo- a symbol that represents a brand or a company 33. Graphic- a picture that represents a larger idea from the play 34. Symbolism- picture, prop or a figure that represents a larger ideal 35. Font- style of text 36. Color Scheme- colors chosen for your design based on the mood you are trying to create 37. Layout- the way a poster, program or design is arranged 38. Portrait- the viewpoint with a short top & bottom and long sides. 39. Landscape- the viewpoint with short sides and a long top & bottom edge 40. Crew- the people who actually create the designs 41. Ad- a small section of the program sold to advertisers to promote their business 42. Press Release- information given to newspapers, magazines, etc. to promote the paly 43. Feature Article- an article written by a newspaper featuring the play 44. Poster- A well designed ad that gives all the information necessary to attend a play. 45. Program- a well-designed booklet that describes the actors, crew, and promotes sponsors 46. Techies- a person dedicated to working through the play 47. Set Elements- component pieces with which the set is built 48. Floor Plan- the design from a bird s eye view 49. Scale- the specified increment to represent a measured foot. ex ¼ means every foot is drawn as ¼ 50. Perspective- an artistic drawing of the set from the audience viewpoint 51. Rendering- A drawing showing a detailed design in color. 52. Medium- materials used to make a design 2

3 53. Scale Mode- 3-D representation of the design in miniature 54. Proportion- making sure everything is built to the same scale 55. Prop- an item or object used by the actors in a play 56. Component Parts- construction pieces like platforms, walls & door frames that are stored as a unit. 57. Sound Effect- A noise specifically created for the play 58. Incidental Music- music used to set the mood in a particular scene of the play 59. Light effect- a specific light used to create a special effect for the play 60. Level- The intensity of light or sound 61. Dim- to bring down or lower the intensity 62. Light Board- the panel used to control the lights during a performance. 63. Light Plot- the panel used to control the sounds during a performance. 64. Sound Log- the schedule of sound effects including music in the order they are played for a show. 65. Production- Everything related to putting on a specific play in a specific location 66. Figure drawing- a drawing of a costume design in a specific size (6-8 ) 67. Format- the way a paper is arranged 68. Production Company- a group that is putting together a specific play in a specific location 69. Line- the edge of a contour or shape 70. Shape- the geometric configuration of an object 71. Color- the hue & pigment 72. Texture- the way something feels, or the way it looks like it feels 73. Value- how light or dark something is 74. Balance- keeping things equal 75. Direction- Which way your eyes want to travel on stage 76. Symmetry- exactly the same on either side 77. Asymmetry- one side is different than the other 78. Table Saw- A saw embedded in a table used to cut large sheet goods 79. Miter Saw- A stationary saw designed to cut straight lines and angles on smaller pieces of wood. 3

4 80. Belt sander- Hand held sander with an oscillating belt 81. Pneumatic Stapler- an air compressor powered staple gun 82. Jig Saw- a handheld saw with a small blade designed to cut intricate designs. 83. Power Drill- used to drill hole sin or fasten together pieces of wood. 84. Palm Sander- a small disc sander held in the palm of your hand 85. Batten- A metal bar suspended from the fly-rail above the stage. 86. Proscenium- the frame around the stage and the type of stage we have in the PAC 87. Apron- the area of stage in front of the Grande Drape. 88. Curtain- On stage material hung from battens used to mask stage areas. 89. Grande Drape- The colored traveler at the front of the stage. 90. Traveler- a curtain that opens and closes across the stage 91. Teaser- a small curtain at the top of the stage used to hide lighting instruments 92. Leg- A small pair of curtains hung on either side of the stage used to mask the wings 93. Electric Batten- a batten with access to a power source 94. Fly Rail- The area where you stand to control battens over the stage. 95. Brake- The lever on the fly-rail that releases or locks the pulleys controlling the battens. 96. Counterweight- a 10 or 25 pound metal weight used to balance weight hung on the battens on the fly-rail. 97. House- The area in which the audience is seated 98. Light Booth- The area where the lights are controlled 99. Sound Booth- The area where the sound is controlled 100. Spotlight- A big, bright light with a long throw used to highlight specific performers on stage. Usually used during musicals Par- A small light with no focus control and an 8 wash that is usually used to provide backlighting Fresnel- Designed by a Frenchman to focus and control the throw of light. Usually used in the catwalk to light the front of the set. Usually use two Fresnels together to round out actor Scoop- Large wash light that cannot be focused with a foot radius and soft edges 104. Shutter- the metal levers used to focus a light in Fresnels and elipsoidals 4

Yoke- The metal bar attached to the sides of a light by which you hang or carry it Safety Cable- a metal rope attached to the yoke and the batten designed to stop lights from falling to the stage if the clamp breaks Gel- a colored plastic gelatin sheet used to add color to lights Cyclorama lights- lights designed to throw colors on the cyclorama curtain Border or Strip lights- A strip of lights with colored glass lenses used to put a wash of color on the stage Barrel- the tube coming off a Fresnel or ellipsoidal light used to help focus and either soften or harden the edges of the light Scene Shop- The work area in the PAC where tools and soft goods are stored Costume Room- The area where costumes and sewing supplies are stored X4- soft wood that is approximately 2 x 4 in size X4- soft wood that is approximately 1 x 4 in size 115. Luanne- Thin (usually ¼ ) plywood used to cover flats and mask platforms ¾ Ply- Thick (3/4 ) plywood used to cover platforms. Capable of supporting weight Platform- A component set piece made of ¾ plywood and 2 x4 frame 118. Flat- A component set piece made of Luanne and 1 x4 frame 119. Screw- a metal fastening device used to connect 2 pieces of construction materials Perspective Sketch- a rough drawing from the audience perspective 121. Drapery- the drape of material in a set design. This is usually a more fluid and soft line W eight- the thickness or the line and the darkness of the lead color- how heavy an item is or how heavy it looks like it is Detail- a detailed close-up showing how a complicated set piece is constructed Rail- the wood that goes all the way across the top and the bottom of a flat Stile- the wood that connects the rails together and makes up the sides of a flat Toggle- the wood used to snug the stiles together for stronger contruction. 5
