Communicating Ideas by Sketching Designers communicate their thoughts through sketches, which allow their CLIENT to visualize what the design will look like. This could be line drawings and freehand sketches using a fine line pen. This is quick sketching and is done this way to save time. When the designs are narrowed down the designer can use other media to communicate ideas in more detail. Designers will follow this with renderings by hand that uses splashes of colour to show shape, form and materials used. After this, using ICT and CAD is essential not just to save time but also to allow the design process to move on very quickly and to allow the client to see exactly what a design will look like and to show what materials are used.
Communicating Ideas by using ICT / CAD The use of ICT and Computer Aided Design allows images to be rendered in different colours and materials with different lighting effects. This allows the design to be shown as a real life image as a computer model on screen. This can be altered easily, ed to different locations and even used to advertise the fragrance and even provide vital information to manufacture the design as a model, prototype or the actual product using Computer Aided Manufacturing. The benefits are that all of this happens quickly so that the design will get to the shop floor quickly. Example of a rendering left and an advert below right. This is a computer generated image not the real bottle. What was the original Design Brief for this product? Problem: Take carpentry to a new level. This spirit level, which is also a bottle of perfume, is something an elegant carpenter could never do without. Levelus is a fresh scent to highlight your love of life and self
confidence. The fragrance opens with a bright chord: Calabriane bergamot, rosemary and clementine oil. The optimistic wood notes of birch, cedar and vetiver are balanced with gentle iris root and cardamom. The bottle is designed for an emotional, strong and self confident man who doesn t waste his time. For frequent use, there are replacement perfume containers. Levelus comes in 20, 40 and 60 ml bottles. This is the last creation of Russian design studio Art. Lebedev Studio already presented repeatedly, a wink to the amazing bottle of perfume for men Levelus spirit level perfume whose form takes its inspiration from the spirit levels used on construction sites. All images and details of the process of creation in the future! The Levelus Spirit Level Perfume, An Amazing Perfume Bottle Design. Its design originates from the spirit level. This theme can be seen in the design sketches and ideas used. The client is given a choice of designs to choose from.
Evaluating Ideas User Trials. Designers can manufacture prototypes to allow testing of the product. The bottle can be tested to ensure that it works correctly. This also allows the designer to test the Target Market and the end user. The designer will want to know what the end user thinks of the product. This is sometimes referred to as a hall test. The findings from this market research will help with the advertising of the product but also will feed information to inform the designer of the potential success of the product or even where it could be improved if at all. Designing by Sketching
Designers like to show a variety of initial ideas for their CLIENT to choose from. They may choose one idea to develop or a selection. The sketches above are very quick freehand sketches shown to the client to choose from. The Final Solution is shown here for the Cologne Bottle and Packaging.
Communicating Design Ideas by Sketching Communicating Design Ideas by Using CAD The visuals created using a computer are very realistic and look almost like a photograph.
Communicating Design Ideas by Sketching Communicating Design Ideas by Using CAD The visuals created using a computer are very realistic and look almost like a photograph.
Communicating Design Ideas by Sketching Communicating Design Ideas by Using CAD You can see the resemblance between the sketches and the visuals created using CAD software. These can communicate the ideas to the CLIENT.
Communicating Design Ideas by Sketching This image shows how a designer uses chalk and china pencil to sketch some fast concept ideas for a perfume bottle. The ideas show form and shape with free flowing lines. A range of ideas is shown with a name for the fragrance and a version for men and women. Similarly sketches by a Product Designer for a drill and a hair dryer. These are hand drawn and communicate the idea well as you can understand what it looks like. These would be shown to a client at a meeting before more time is pent on the idea/s that are chosen.
Communicating Design Ideas by Sketching This image shows how Product Designer sketches ideas for a mobile phone. This is drawn using fine line pen and markers. The designer also produces more detailed renderings to show the shape and form of the new design for the mobile phone. Notice in the sketches there is very little annotation and labeling as the visual speaks for itself. You can understand what materials are used and the colours and shape of the design. This is what you will have to do for your project on page 10 of your design folio. You could provide a visual by hand or using a computer but it must communicate with your target audience.
