Element of Art Shape

WHAT IS SHAPE? An area that is contained using a line and identified because of change in color or value. In other words: They have 2-dimentions (length and width) and can be geometric (inorganic) or free form (organic).

TYPES OF SHAPES: GEOMETRIC Using straight lines and simple shapes such as circles or squares; shapes that conform to the laws and methods of geometry In other words: the regular shapes you learn about in math: circles, squares, rectangles, rhombus, dodecagon, etc.

TYPES OF SHAPES: ORGANIC/ FREE FORM Shapes that are not regular or even, using a combination of edges that are curved or angular. Shapes that tend to reference objects found in nature. Another name for organic shapes: free form shapes

TYPES OF SHAPES: POSITIVE & NEGATIVE Contour: outer edge of a shape. Can also be a way of drawing using a single smooth line. Positive Shape: the area contained inside a contour edge ( the orange part of the picture to the left). Negative Shape: the shape created by the contour edge of a positive shape (the white part of the picture to the left).

BLIND CONTOUR DRAWING Contour: outer edge of a shape. Can also be a way of drawing using a single smooth line. Focuses on drawing just the simple basic outline and simple details. Blind Contour Drawing is an exorcise that builds your hand-eye coordination. Rules for Blind Contour Drawing: 1. Use one single flowing continuous line; Once you start drawing do NOT pick up your pencil until you are finished. 2. Never look at your drawing hand until you are done. 3. Measure angles and distance for lines with your eyes (pretend your where your eyes are looking are connected to the end of your pencil). 4. Absolutely NO Erasing!

PABLO PICASSO 25 OCTOBER APRIL 1973 Art Style: Cubism. It s an artistic style, used mostly in painting and sculpture, that was developed in the early 20th century. It emphasizes the representation of natural forms as geometric shapes seen from several angles. In other words: give the idea of reality rather than make it look realistic in order to represent the truth behind a subject. This style was created in reaction to the invention of the Photograph- He wanted to capture what a camera can t. Before the invention of the camera most artist were trying to record reality. A photograph can do that fast, accurately, and inexpensively. Many though it was the end of the art world. It was people like Picasso that challenged the idea what can art do that a photograph can t?. Picasso pushed the ideas to extremes: simplifying shapes and showing objects from multiple points of view (right-profile, leftprofile, and Frontal all at the same time!).

GUERNICA Guernica is a mural-size canvas painted in oil. Picasso's purpose in painting it was to bring the world's attention to the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica by German bombers, who were supporting the Nationalist forces of General Franco during the Spanish Civil War. Picasso completed the painting by mid-june Guernica shows suffering people, animals, and buildings wrenched by violence and chaos. The overall scene is within a room where, at an open end on the left, a wide-eyed bull stands over a woman grieving over a dead child in her arms. A light bulb blazes in the shape of an evil eye over the suffering horse's head (the bare bulb of the torturer's cell.) Picasso's intended symbolism in regards to this object is related to the Spanish word for light-bulb; "bombilla", which makes an allusion to "bomb" and therefore signifies the destructive effect which technology can have on society.

ANDY GOLDSWORTHY BORN 26 JULY PRESENT The materials/medium used in Andy Goldsworthy's art are usually found objects in nature like brightly-colored flowers, icicles, leaves, mud, pinecones, snow, stone, twigs, and thorns. Goldsworthy often uses only his bare hands, teeth, and found tools to prepare and arrange the materials; however, for his permanent sculptures like "Roof", "Stone River" and "Three Cairns", he has also worked with his assistant and five British dry-stone wallers. Photography plays a crucial role in his art due to its often ephemeral and transient state. According to Goldsworthy, "Each work grows, stays, decays integral parts of a cycle which the photograph shows at its heights, marking the moment when the work is most alive. There is an intensity about a work at its peak that I hope is expressed in the image. Process and decay are implicit. He is inspired by a combination of the objects found in nature and representing the universal cycles that the earth and we as humans go through over the course of our lives. He represents these ideas by arranging the found objects into shapes like the winding path, concentric circles, and spirals.
