2 WHO WAS PABLO PICASSO? Spanish expatriate* Pablo Picasso was one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, as well as the co-creator of Cubism. Born in October 25, 1881 he was considered to be radical in his work. In Cubist paintings, objects are broken apart and reassembled in an abstracted form, highlighting their composite geometric shapes and depicting them from multiple, simultaneous viewpoints in order to create physics-defying, collage-like effects. *expatriate means a person who lives outside their native country.

4 CUBISM CHARACTERISTICS Breaks down a picture into it s geometric shapes: cube, sphere, cylinder, and cone. Transforms 2D objects into a optical illusion that appears to be in 3D by providing multiple points of view. Traditionally uses a monochromatic scale*, dominated by grays and browns. However, more modern cubist art uses a wider range of colours. The finished work of art is considered abstract*. *monochromatic scales are created from a single base colour and extended using its shades and tints. Tints are created by adding white and shades are created by adding grey or black. *abstract means the use of shapes, forms, colours and lines to create a piece of art which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.

8 SUCCESS CRITERIA You must choose a comic superhero to depict in cubist form. Your artwork needs to show your character from at least the chest up. The superhero must take up 75% of the page. You must use full colour in your artwork, and you must choose either a monochromatic scale or use the more modern colour scale of your superhero. Show your understanding of cubism (ie. multiple viewpoints, geometric shapes, etc.). You must unify your background with your subject. This means that your background is related to your choice of superhero (ie. The Joker s background is laughter, Thor s background is lightning). You will be given 4 classes to work on this.
