1 AA Digital Prototyping Lab Brief As part of the larger AA 2020 plan the Digital Prototyping Lab is bound for an important reconfiguration in terms of facilities, equipment and staff. The lab is a rapidly evolving department that provides key facilities necessary for architectural education and research in digital technologies. Increased demand from students and an evolving academic brief which relies heavily on digital fabrication technologies has at times overwhelmed the lab in its current state. The new lab will have 3 key features: 1.- It will be self-contained and have occupational flexibility. 2.- It includes a large fabrication yard, connecting to the other workshops. 3.- It will almost triple its current size and include professional grade equipment. It is located in the basement from 36 to 39 Bedford Square, enabling the lab to house new equipment in a more organized and secure manner, ensuring students have proper working facilities and allowing staff to work in a more comfortable and optimum manner while increasing its opening hours. By means of the 2020 General Workshop plan it will allow for staff and students to communicate through the Fabrication Courtyard with the other workshops at the AA (wood, metal and model workshop). The new DPL will see the addition of new and exciting technologies such as SLA resin and SLS nylon 3Dprinting, metal and stone cutting capabilities, an electronics corner to solder and create end effectors and actuators, faster and larger laser cutters, a more effective Robotic fabrication cell, and a bigger assembly and teaching space.
