Course description (from the University Calendar): Introduction to design; development of design judgment and communication skills in a series of exercises addressing light, scale, space, form and colour in the built environment; introduction to techniques of oral and graphic presentation, including model making, photography, sketching and architectural drawing. The course is based in the studio and includes lectures, seminars and field trips. 2. Studio Theme: Building Simply 3. Course objective: Beyond providing the opportunity to learn the basic skills listed in the course description (above), in this introductory studio you are encouraged to critically and and creatively think about context, precedents, architectural design, and architectural detailing. The overall theme of the Fall Term studio is Building Simply, the title of a book published by Birkhauser Architecture in their In Detail series in 2001 (this book will be placed on reserve in the library). As in recent years architect-designed buildings are starting to look the same the world over, in this studio resistance to this tendency will be explored through the investigation of design characteristics that inform memorable places, place making, and architecture. Students are encouraged to explore the historical, social, cultural, and philosophical basis of their projects, and to reach beyond considerations of form to address meaning and values. In this regard, the projects of the first year studio will be grounded in the investigation of the everyday aspects of architecture and material culture, including vernacular architecture, with the creative possibility of making the ordinary extraordinary. 4. Studio organization: The class will be divided into four sections. Each section will work under the primary supervision of a single instructor. Readings and resource materials may differ from section to section, but the schedule and project requirements will be the same for all four sections. Reading lists will be prepared for each project as it is issued. Articles available online will be listed on the studio web page. 5. 3 6. Weekly schedule: All students will attend lectures each week on Tuesday morning at 8:30am in room 212. After the lecture, students will meet individually with their instructors in the studio on Tuesday until 5:30pm and on Thursday between the hours of 10:30am to 6:30pm. Note that assignments for the course Architectural Drawing (ARCH 221) may at times integrate with the studio course work and studio schedule (the drawing course will meet at 8:30am on Thursday mornings). The Tuesday morning lectures in room 212 will also be used to present the requirements for new projects. Please be on time for the Tuesday lectures (attendance will be noted, and this counts towards your grade for participation). Lecture schedule: September 13, 20, 27 October 4, 11, 18, 25 November 1, 8, Projects: (detailed descriptions and requirements to be posted on the course web page during the term) Project #1: Sketching/Analytiques (Due September 6:00pm) (see the outline for ARCH 221) This project involves the documentation of a particular location in the City of Montreal. You may collaborate with others within your group for the purpose of sharing basic information (city maps, photography, measuring ). Note that this first project is integrated with the first assignment for ARCH 201, and involves two required components; 1) sketches in your landscape-oriented 5 x 8 Moleskine (graded for ARCH 201), and 2), an analytique (graded for ARCH 221) on one sheet of white Arches watercolour paper (22 x 30, hot pressed surface, 140lb., portrait orientation). Using your Moleskine sketchbook, prepare quick, annotated analytical sketches using pencil and/or watercolour(possible topics: details, materials, light, assemblies, colour, form, procession, scale). On your Arches paper, prepare an analytique using pencil and/or watercolour (no ink or felt pens), keeping in mind the analogical purpose of such drawings in analyzing form, construction, details, and materials. The analytique may include orthographic drawings in various scales (site plan, site elevations, building elevations), as well as freehand or with instruments instrument drawn details. Do not glue or tape anything to the Arches paper.
4 Note: make sure your name appears clearly on the inside of the cover of your Moleskine, and also on the front of your analytique. These sketches and analytiques are due on Wednesday, September 6:00pm. Review requirements and end of term submissions: To be listed project by project during the term. 10. Grading: Participation in all phases of the studio is mandatory and important. The course will be evaluated by a letter grade at the end of the semester. Halfway through the term we will discuss our assessment of each student s work, and we will let students know if their grade is tending towards a C or lower. The evaluation criteria relate to the pedagogical objectives/themes explained above and established with respect to clarity of ideas, project development, richness of exploration, critical judgment, and abilities acquired through process and representational techniques. Each grade will be based upon a comparison with other students in the course and with students who have previously taken the course as well as with the instructor s expectations relative to the stated objectives of the course, based on his/her experience and expertise. A student s presence and active participation in the studio environment forms an integral part of the education of an architect. Dialogue and exchange with classmates in the studio is vital to personal growth and the acquisition of knowledge and technique. Students will be given a workspace accessible around the clock. All work is required to be done in the studio. Attendance and work during studio hours is mandatory and an inherent part of the participation grade. Attendance for the full duration of reviews is also required, not only for your own section but for other sections should the review schedule permit this. Missing a review may result in an unsatisfactory grade for the term, and a note from a physician is required should you miss a review due to illness.

Moleskine Sketchbook Requirement Moleskin sketchbooks: READ THIS CAREFULLY! Sketchbook with watercolour paper (Moleskin 13cm x 21 cm size, landscape orientation, no substitutions accepted). These sketchbooks are available at a discount from Papeterie Nota Bene, 3416 Ave. du Parc ( ). Mention your studio course and you should be able to receive a discount. We are interested in quality more than quantity, but as a general guide, students who have done well with the sketchbook requirement have usually filled the book, or several books (students have occasionally required more space than one sketchbook will allow). Keep in mind the conceptual and analytical purpose of the sketches in the sketchbook, which will serve as a diary of the evolution of your project (watercolour medium encouraged!). The sketchbook is to be physically available in the studio during consultations (desk crits). Note that your sketches/notes should be analytical in character, documenting details, concepts, and observations (for exemplary examples of architect s sketchbooks, see Steven Holl s work: Holl s books Parallax and Written in Water will be placed on reserve in the library). Sketches and physical models will also be used for both studio consultations and reviews. 13. Archiving of work, digital archiving, and web-based portfolio In order to receive a grade, at the end of the term you must submit scans of each page of your Moleskine sketchbook at actual size, 72dpi resolution in colour, using jpgs. No substitutions permitted. These jpg scans must be numbered consecutively (as shown below- place a zero before single digits) and placed in a folder with your name on the folder. As every term someone loses or misplaces their Moleskine sketchbook, we recommend scanning the pages every week to make sure you have a digital backup. You should also regularly photograph other work in the studio to prepare for your end-of-term digital portfolio. Don t wait until the end of the term to do this! 01.jpg 02. jpg
7 04. jpg 10.jpg 11.jpg You must also submit both high (300dpi actual size or similar for drawing scans suitable for printing) and low (72dpi actual size for drawing scans) resolution photos or scans of your drawings and models at the end of the term, as well as a simple digital portfolio using a web page you have created (Adobe Dreamweaver is available on the EMF network for this purpose). Please consult with studio faculty towards the end of the term to discuss the contents, format, and web page. A tutorial demonstrating the construction of a basic web page will be made available for those who need assistance in this regard. 14.
