J. Heinz Company distributed a series of beautifully colored airplane trading cards packaged with their Rice Flakes and Breakfast Wheat cereals. Twenty-five leading types of Modern Airplanes were described in the series. Each colored picture was meant to be an accurate, exact reproduction of some aircraft that had won distinction in its own particular field. The set was designed to provide a permanent record of Aviation in The H. J. Heinz Company issued two separate series of the basic twenty-five card set. The checklists for the two series were the same; however there were major artwork differences between the two series. The quickest way to identify a Type 1 or Type 2 card is: Type 1 cards have the card number listed only once on the front of the cards; Type 2 cards list the card number twice on the front of the card. There are also variations in the reverse side of the cards. The basic differences between the two series are shown below. This collector s guide only addresses the F277-1 or "Type 1" card series. Most collectors populate their collections using the front of the cards as a reference. If that is your basis for collecting this set, then you only have 25 cards to collect. However, you should be aware that there are at least seven different printings for this set. There might even be more. So if you're a purist, the total number of cards in the set is at least 175. The series identifiers and variations are noted on the reverse side of the cards. We have provided examples of the fronts and backs of a sample card from each of the seven series. The seven printing series numbers are: 0969, 3238, 9836, 13137, 14636, and Two Different Albums Most collectors are hard-pressed to come up with one of the "Modern Aviation" albums for the F277-1 Famous Airplanes card set let alone two! This is evidently one of the curve balls that H. J. Heinz threw with this collection. 6 Multiple Printings There were a total of twenty-five airplane images associated with the H. J. Heinz F277-1 Famous Airplanes series. However, there were seven different printings of the series. The total number of card variations is therefore 175 cards. The printing series number is located on the reverse side of the card on the lower right-hand corner.
