3 Section 1: Lighting concepts Objectives At the end of this section you should be able to: Accurately use the terms and units related to the processes and concepts of illumination Identify the factors essential for visual comfort Describe the basic concepts of light production Determine illumination levels on a given area/working plane with regard to total flux Apply the inverse square law to illumination levels, luminous intensity and distance. Visual comfort Contrast Glare Reflectance Unwanted reflection Brightness (luminosity). Terms and units used to describe the processes and concepts of illumination are explained in your textbook and in Appendix A of this module. Some common terms and units are: The visual comfort of an environment is determined by the relative degrees of: TAFE NSW (Training & Education Support, Industry Skills Unit Meadowbank) 2012 Page 7 of 120
4 Light production Production of light is achieved electrically by: Passing a current through the filament of a lamp (incandescence) The excitation of phosphors in a varying electric field (electroluminescence) The ionisation of a gas or vapour (discharge). Illumination levels The illumination level on a surface can be calculated using: E = F/A where: E = Illuminance in lux F = Flux in lumens A = Area in m 2. Inverse square law The effect on illumination levels of increasing the distance from the light source can be determined using the inverse square law.
